Restaurant Recommendations: South Lake Tahoe, California

Hello To All! We're visiting South Lake Tahoe in March from the UK and as everyone knows, exchange rates have seriously altered the 'value' of eating out! We're after good, honest, wholesome cooking, no fast-food stuff. Steak and a salad bar would be great and a good recommend for breakfast, too. Any good Chinese/Thai or a good Italian? Thanks for any assistance

Lucky for you, I live in South Lake. Unfortunately, the only place I've done steak and salad bar is the Chart House, which is an expensive chain (but they have fab lake views). All the casinos offer this type of dining too, but I try to avoid them in general, so can't give any rec's there. Best breakfast in town is at the Red Hut Waffle Shop, Burt's Cafe comes in second. There is good Thai at Orchids (and super-cheap weekday lunch), no good Chinese in town that I've found. There is a good Indian buffet lunch at the Taj Mahal- don't be put off if it's empty, this town just doesnt appreciate good Indian. Tep's is supposed to be good for Italian, I never go out for Italian food besides pizza, so I've never been there. Lake Tahoe pizza company has seriously heavenly crust, Blue Dog Pizza has really yummy toppings. Excellent sushi at Off the Hook and Sato. Hearty and healthy food at Sprouts and Freshies. Best Mexican in town is Taqueria Jalisco- a hole in the wall, but the real deal (make sure you get at least 1 thing with Birria.) Local coffee shops are Wide Awake and Alpine Sierra. Hope that helps and enjoy your visit!

It's a little different from what you're after, but whenever we're in South Lake and have a little extra money, we go to Fire and Ice. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet similar to Mongolian Barbecue but it includes all kinds of seafood in addition to steak, chicken, and other meats. We aren't big eaters, but with a salad bar and all the seafood you can eat, $25 doesn't seem that bad. Definitely go hungry!

To Embackus and Megan, thank you so much. This will keep us all busy and full by the sounds of things. The only one I recognise is 'Fire & Ice' having grabbed a beer there when passing through once! Nice, and as you say a bit pricey, but an all-you-can-eat buffet is always a great way to end a ski day. Embackus, what a fantastic place to live. Lucky you. Thanks again.
