Slicing Onions: Does Direction Make a Difference?
A commenter on SimplyRecipes' blog on caramelizing onions said "It's nice to see that other people recognize the classic way to cut onions for caramelization" - i.e., pole to pole as opposed to rings.
Is this just a style/presentation thing, or does the direction of slicing affect the cooking or taste of a given recipe?

imop, it's a personal style. depending on what i'm making, defines the size i cut. for regular caramelizing i mostly cut top to bottom. sometimes i cut a thick round and caramelize that way. it tastes the same to me.

Pole to pole is standard for carmelized onions. Cutting rings would make the onions less uniform, and imho, is a more difficult cut.

Definitely makes a difference. Your ultimate purpose for the onions would dictate which cut you use.

After much google searching I found this answer from an article the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of Cook's Illustrated.
Also a nice video demonstration of slicing an onion into half-rings.
