Serious Eats Is a Serious Obsession: Anybody Else?

My husband walked into the room where I was sitting on the couch in my robe, coffee in hand, computer in my lap (I'm typically NOT good for anything in the morning! Nor, am I usually up) and said; Really, is this who you are now? It's known around our house as my "current obsession". I didn't have a last one.
I don't really have to ask, because you're all always there before I am but, what about you?

Well, I'm having a rapidly developing migraine (grrr, I somehow always forget what the warning signs are until it's too late. Now, I just want to die swiftly and quietly), and I still can't stay away - there you go:-)

My name is hungryinhouston, and I am a Serious Eats Addict.

I've become seriously hooked, but I have an excuse. I stumbled on this site from the Alton Brown site out of Foodtv.com. I 'm at home recovering from rotator cuff surgery, so I have a lot of free time on my hands, and this has become my obsession. I like to cook and I enjoy learning anything I can about it, but I would normally be spending my time at the gym. Since I can't lift weights while I recover, Serious Eats has become my new hobby. And without the lifting and all this food talk, I've gained 10 lbs. since I've been here. My recovery should be complete soon, but I'll still be here when I get home from the gym.

I love Serious Eats, mostly because most of the topics and recipes covered on here are on my current level of culinary proficiency -- that is to say, rank amateur, haha. I also really enjoy the sense of comraderie that all of the longtime members have with each other; it's just a fun place to come read about new recipes and techniques and other foodie quirks. =)

@dm - Don't skip that physical therapy! My husband is the only person I know who can reach his arm around the top of his head and touch his shoulder. He's had two RCSs, one per shoulder. He religiously did his physical therapy. OK - off my soap box.

Yes, I'm obsessed. I was watching my Steeler's playoff game and was typing as I watched. Unheard of for me since I idolize football. I guess I enjoy the sense of family I find here. Hubby is now getting curious as to what I'm doing all the time on the net. I've been yanking his chain a bit ;-D
I'll fill him in tomorrow about SE.

@Brooke29~I'm sure you know that the computer and television, in that order, are the WORST things for you.
Caffeine, feverfew, those are good. I know, I get them too.

@carol - you're so right, but I'm feeling so sick and miserable right now that I desperately need a distraction... Caffeine, feverfew, dark room, sunglasses, cold compress, SE - check, check, check...

So sorry Brookster! Once I was so bad that my husband and daughter had to wear sweaters and scarves in the house. Cold, dark room. You seem to be doing it all.
Do you have any meds? I used to take Imitrex, it was an absolute miracle, but I think there are so many more now.
Good luck chickie.

I definitely have waves in which discussion sites I visit but SE has been right up there since I first visited. One of the reasons I love this site is because there is little or no "off topic" discussion - and that's where people run into trouble. The other thing is that I detect very little ego on this site which makes it nice and snuggly for me, like a big leather chair where I can curl my whole self. I love learning from everyone's experiences and implementing great ideas garnered from SE.

So, yeah, I guess it counts as an obsession. ((Sigh))

I only check in on SE every hour, every day. So, no I'm not obsessed.

Yes, I'm obsessed. The kids and husband often tease me about my "other family." Hey, this is a great place to hang out at from the comfort of my own home. Nice people, interesting information and quite often a good laugh! The staff at Serious Eats does a kick ass job--so THANKS!

Been here since the beta and have enjoyed everyday. IS SE an obsession, no. My obsessions run bigger and its a symptom, not the whole obssession.

I dont think SE is an obsession, however it is a welcome addition to my day! I dont get out much these days and to be honest I cant stand watching more than an hour of tv at a time. SE is a way to pass the time and be with people I've learned to care a great deal about. not only for their wisdom in the kitchen, but for the encouragement and support everyone lends to each other. Ya'll are wonderful, crazy people and I love each and every one of you! Thanks SE for giving me a "new family"

I just realized that I checked SE before email. Rut row!!

Like huneybumper, having my new family has really helped in getting past some bumps in the road. Also sending out love, and getting even more in return. Not sure how it happened, but it's amazing and true. You guys (sorry....yuze guys) are lifelines.

@Perky -- awwww....:o)

Yes, for me it's an obsession and addiction, and one I'm not likely to kick anytime soon. I find myself checking it at least once an hour all day while I'm at work. I am just waiting for that e-mail from IT saying they've got to block it....gosh I hope not...

I love all the newsy-bits of info and recipe exchanges and ideas floating around here...and I like seeing names I've become happily familiar with popping up and reading what they have to say and laughing out loud at the silliness and quirkiness...(Perky, JerzeeTomato, dhorst, huney, izatryt, hungryinhouston, MISSESTEXAS, therealChiff...hugs to you all)

Yep I can relate for sure!
I'm always checking to see what you all crazy folks are up to! What sort-of interesting facts I can bring home, fun recipe ideas--and of course weird stories.

I've sure cut-back on smoking but replaced it with Serious Eats :D

Funny this topic is up--I had a dream that I had to dial someones phone number from SE because my OH and I were stuck on a recipe! LOL crazyness.

@julie - what, no hugs for me?;-)

@Carol - I tried Imitrex and experienced a very unpleasant side effect, to put it mildly (it near-paralysed me for a couple of hours), so now it's just Excedrine for me. And coke, it's the only time I ever drink coke.

@brooke -- sorry!!! {{{{{brooke29}}}}}}
There you go...no love lost, I hope?!
{{{{to everyone I may have forgotten to mention}}}}}}}

@julie - it hurts my head to laugh right now, but OH just came running to check what's wrong with me because I was laughing out laud:-)

@julie~ i have tears. wth.

@brooke~ the next time you go to the doc. ask to try midrin. i've take the whole shabang, and i would kiss/lick the shoe of whoever invented this stuff.
