Serious Eaters Get Together?

I was just curious as to whether or not any of the SE's here who live near one another have ever gotten together to go to a new restuarant, or swap recipes?

I live in the Twin Cities, and I think that it would be kind of fun to get together with others in the area.

I've never, but would welcome the opp. I'm in ATL. I think a few others are hereabouts.

CarolrsfMISSESTEXAS and I met for lunch in Newark, DE and dined at Home Grown, which was recommended to us by another poster on SE, blankplate. Jerzee recommended Cafe Gelato, however, they were closed for the holiday break. We enjoyed the restaurant and had a wonderful time talking about the food. We shared ideas and a lovely bottle of Champagne. Of course, we had to spend some time talking about our favorite group of Serious Eaters!

Anyone in Nashville? Or Franche-Comté? I'd love to meet up with some folks from here.

@iz--I know, I wished I could have joined you guys, but DE is a little too far for me.

I'm in Indy---anyone else?

We've organized a few events in NYC (since that's where we are!), and it's been a lot of fun. If anyone would like some help organizing an event in their city, I'd be happy to pitch in remotely, just send me an email (alaina@seriouseats.com). The Serious Eats Facebook group is also a great way to get in touch with other serious eaters.

Facebook has been blocked at work...and since I do most of my trolling on my down-time here, I have not been able to join the SE Facebook page, unfortch. However, SE is always up on my desktop....I'm waiting for the e-mail saying they are blocking this!! :o)

Great idea! Anyone in Las Vegas/Henderson? So many restaurants ... so little time ...

@julie: I hear ya! Same thing here.

@iz: *sniff, sniff/sad face* I want to go next time. That is my 'hood you know.

Outside Dayton, Ohio here.

Are there any Serious Eaters from Central Canada besides me?

oklahoma here, claremore to be exact- anyone else out there?

Aw Butrfly ~ I promise next time we will give you plenty of notice!

alright now i really feel left out.

I'm in the Twin Cities - western burbs - and would love to try out new places with other Eaters. Whenever I suggest trying something new to a friend or family member, I usually get a wrinkled nose or a funny face. One word of warning: I'm not very good at negotiating my way downtown. I tend to drive the wrong way down the one way because I'm too busy looking for where I'm supposed to be. Hopefully I won't do that so much now that I have GPS.

Aw dearrie ~ I promise next time we will give you plenty of notice! ;-)

@iz and @Butrflygirly - if you guys have your lunch in spring or summer, I may even make it to DE!

@CooksForOne: I am the same way. I live south of Saint Paul, and although I can negotiate that city fairly well, I am hopeless when it comes to Minneapolis. But, is there a place that you have been wanting to try? And is anyone else here from the Twin Cities that might like to get together? I also have issues getting people to try new things or even new places that serve the same food. :(

Shout out IZ! That was soo fun and the more the merrier everybody. I think NYC might even be ok if we had a bunch of us and made it an event.
@Butrflygirl~I felt a little guilty as I was driving into town because, of course it was then that I realized you had said "my stompin' grounds". Cute town.

If buffy's out there~I made those potato chip/butter cookies. OMG everybody loved them.

Wow .. I'm really surprised that no one's from NYC -- at least, no one that's answering. =/ Alaina, when was this past gathering??

What about Baltimore? I'm here until graduation in May, and out of classes until the end of January ..

Ok, I'm now on Facebook, thanks to Alaina. I need friends!

@Perky - I just joined today, too - I'll look for you!

Ya Hoo Brooke! I used my real name - Perky Mac. ;-D

I live in the Albany,NY area, but, I often travel to NYC. Would be up to participate in either of these locations.

@akk328 Hah.. you poor thing.....Kettering,OH here.. we do have a Trader Joes and of course, the inimitable Jungle JIm's.

I think if we'd try to have here in New York we'd never make it happen. How would we all agree where to meet?

That being said, I'm totally down for a New York Meetup! How about neutral ground - like a bar - instead of a restaurant?

@kfarrel3~I'm in Baltimore too! I'm all for that. Have you been to Dogwood Diner in Hampden? OMG. Went there on my initial househunting trip in Jan of 08. Incredible.

okay, i'm on facebook now too! not that i wasn't before, cough. A little too much, probably

@Carol--I'm glad you liked them! My husband's mad because I gave away all the ones I made and he hasn't gotten any. Must remedy that....

Oh I'm in central CA btw.

@carol -- I think we've made the Bawlmore connection before, haha. I haven't been to the Dogwood Diner -- I don't know much of Hampden. Actually, I've done very little serious eating in Baltimore at all; I've never even been to Pete's Grill, the famous Michael Phelps brunch hotspot. I do love, though, Paper Moon, the crazy little diner (pics from a reunion dinner) a couple of blocks from Charm City Cakes (which I will sit outside until I meet Duff -- I WILL meet him! lol). It's so amazingly fantastic, the only complaint I have is that over the summer they switched from 24/7 hours of operation to being closed from like 2am-7am.

Well i would love to get together with people who live in Seattle or the area and/or if someone is taking some sort of trip to Seattle. When I was addicted to Everquest/crack I met all sorts of people who either visited Seattle and lived here or around the area. I don't know if I am on Facebook or not, half the time I don't know what I do on the computer? How do I get on Facebook?

I'm from NJ and I know that a number of other posters are in the tri-state region more 'south' than North--I've always wondered about setting up a central location for all of us to meet, perhaps in Princeton (which is near-ish PA) or somewhere, to have a meal and 'dish.'

ATL reporting in here too - I love meets! You guys up in NY/NJ/CT would need to rent a banquet hall to accommodate all the tri-staters. :D

I have a myspace. I don't have a Facebook page though I know lately it's all the rage. I keep feeling like it should be either/or with MySpace and Facebook.

@hungrychristel: Nope, Toronto.

I'd consider attending a NYC meet up. I've canceled numerous trips there over the years and don't remember the last time I was there. It seems that people around here go to NYC so often they practically commute. Or maybe it's just that I know a lot of people and NYC is one of those places people go.

I don't want to be left out:

@ regular posters -

Add ME!

Alaina - How about an "Offline" topic in Talk or under Eating Out? Serious Eaters could propose offlines in various places and anyone interested (up to a certain number) could join. This is a common feature on certain of the wine boards (such as eRobertParker). DH and I have joined a number of "wino" offlines before and have made a number of fast friends through the process.

nyc would be great. i miss the m&m store already..

I'm an hour out of NYC, I think it would be a hoot to get together.

@Traveller - I'm up for any kind of food! My friends don't venture past chains for the most part so I really want to try local independent restaurants. I wish I had suggestions, but I'm drawing a blank. Please feel free to email me at "lynnda" underscore "s" at "hotmail" dot "com"

Oh man, NYC meet up sounds amazing! I live in Manhattan.

@chiff--yeah, I think a tri-state meet would be somewhat unwieldy. But I was thinking that a meet for the Southern Mid-Atlantic SE might be do-able. I'm sort of smack-dab in the middle region of NJ, so I could go either to a NY or 'Southern' NJ meet.

I also thought it might be a fun SE meet idea to get together a group to go to a cooking demo or food-related lecture, perhaps on a weekend afternoon to 'dish' afterwards about it, at a nearby restaurant...

@Mizbee: I like your suggestion! Everyone else, want to give it a try? For organizing a local meet-up, start a topic in Eating Out with the title Offline: City Name.
