Seltzer/Club Soda: Way or No Way?

I love seltzer (or club soda, whatever you want to call it). I drink it with lemon, with lime, and sometimes I will mix some powdered drink mix (like crystal light) into it. My new favorite is mixing a bit of "light" limemade with seltzer. It tastes like how you'd want Sprite to taste!

But - I was talking about this with someone at work, and she is completely, 100% anti-seltzer. She said it tastes sour.

So it got me thinking... where are you on the seltzer/club soda issue? Way or no way?

Seltzer and club soda are not the same thing. Club Soda has alot of sodium.
I luv seltzer. Mix it with a little juice-perfect! Very refreshing on a hot day.
Like it plain, too!
Woo-hoo! My first comment.

Way on the seltzer/club soda........like it with a shot of gin and lime

@widget - that's odd, I've never noticed a taste difference between them, so I just assumed they were the same thing. And hooray for your first comment (of many, I hope!)

Pay attention to the labels. At least where I live, the sodium levels are nearly identical. Once upon a time that was true, but things are different now, at least hereabouts. The saltiness, something I generally like, just didn't fly with me. Mr. Meatloaf, though, an old Brooklynite, loved the stuff. When we traveled in Europe, I found I preferred my mineral water with gas rather than flat, and he finally pointed out that if I liked that, I'd probably like club soda, too. And so it came to pass....

Just a wedge of lime, please. The other stuff is nice, but I can live without it.

I like both, with lime or lemon, but plain sparkling water is even better, I think. No sodium there! :)

Welcome Widget - love that name!

I reach for quinine water, aka tonic. I love it with a twist of lime. Gin is nice, too, but not necessary. Salt & sugar, I know, I know - although you sure can't taste either. It's an occasional summer drink.

Diet tonic water can be found sometimes, which helps the sugar problem. And there are those who swear it's good for leg cramps because of the quinine content.

I drink a lot of fluid in a day--sometimes it's the only healthy thing I do. But diet soda was too expensive and straight fruit juice was destroying my stomach. I discovered MASH, which is just about a perfect mixture of not-too-sweet fruit juice with not-too-gassy bubbles, but it's way too expensive. Now my drink of choice is Ceres unsweetened pineapple juice with San Pellegrino water. Next step: switching out SP for a cheaper brand of bubbles. I'll get to physical/financial help yet!

No way on both, but I like tonic, too @Perk (especially when it comes with gin). And speaking of quinine, I used to love Schweppes Bitter Lemon, but I haven't seen it being sold in the States - so I reckon they just don't sell it here, or at least not in NJ. Too bad.

I happen to like plain water for my "regular" drinking though.

It depends on my mood, so I would have to say Way (some of the time).

We prefer seltzer over club...read a long time ago that club soda contained additives including sodium and caffeine. Don't know if that's still the case.

I'm with your friend who said it's too sour. My husband and father-in-law love it though. They mix it with juice all the time. To me this just makes the juice watery.

i buy these juice concentrates from the health food store: pomegranate, cranberry, cherry, blueberry.... you just need a little squirt of one of these great flavors in seltzer to jazz it up.... it's great when you want something more than "water".....

Way - I love club soda but for some reason I only drink it on airplanes. It really settles my air-sick stomach.

I got one of those seltzer makers from Soda Club for my birthday. I had a $8/week flavored seltzer habit. I really like seltzer as my go to beverage during the day, so the machine has been awesome!

On the fence.

While I did enjoy many bottles of raspberry New York Seltzers in high school (I can't find it anymore), I have a feeling that's not really what you all like about or consider seltzer.

I was extremely thirsty while at a Greek festival and asked the bartender what "kind of soda" they had, expecting a response like Coke, Sprite, Pepsi, whatever. He filled a disposable tumbler with something clear and fizzy, I paid $3, and thought, I guess the answer was Sprite. I took a sip, shocked at the salty, dry fizz, then choked it down, and gave it to my husband w/o telling him just to see his reaction. Same reaction. I didn't expect club soda. *frown* By itself, no.

Orange concentrate with carbonated water is essentially what my daily fix of Aranciata and occasional Limonata are made of, so I would probably not mind club soda/seltzer w/ juice as long as I can get it w/o the salt.

Oops Limonata is made with lemons instead of oranges...

Way. In everything from drinks (boozy and non) to cooking and baking.
Gives me fizz without having to drink pop/soda.

Way. I especially like drinking it (and most other beverages) out of a wine glass. Love it with a little citrus squeeze...lime, lemon, orange, or grapefruit.

I have to be honest I dont care for either one, but I can kill a litre of pellegrino in record time. I love it mixed in with a bit of cranberry juice especially in the summer.

OMG! That's my beverage OF CHOICE and you should see the puzzled looks I get when I order it at a place with no bar.

I got so peeved during a trip to the south I bellowed at the waitress, "What is wrong with you people - what does the south have against FIZZY WATER??"

So count me as a great big WAY. I kind of gave up ordering seltzer anywhere outside NY but can generally get my beloved club soda with lime.

PS - Also love Pellegrino but not so crazy about Perrier.

No way.. Maybe I havent tried enough of either yet, but I can't even swallow a mouthful without a sour face.

I love plain seltzer but I also enjoy using it to make my own sodas. I mix it with almond syrup, maple syrup and also homemade fruit syrups. I suspect this is at least somewhat healthier than commercial soda and a lot cheaper than drinking juice all the time (I don't particularly like plain water).

I also like it with some vodka and lime but I'm not going to claim there are any benefits to that.

*WAY* for me @ seltzer!

I mostly drink the plain, which averages between 33 and 50 cents per liter, but I also enjoy vanilla-flavored seltzer.

When I stopped drinking soda (and then diet soda), because of the additives they contain, I switched over to the seltzer. We buy an average of a dozen 1-liter bottles per week for me; my wife can go through 5 or 6 bottles of citrus-flavored seltzer @ the same timeframe.

But NOW my background - I grew up @ Brooklyn - forces me to ask all of you SE'ers who have posted the 24 comments @ this thread... How can it be that none of you has mentioned the absolutely QUINTESSENTIAL use for plain seltzer? People, I'm talkin' that amazing make-your-mouth-happy drink, the eggcream!!!

I am truly flabbergasted. And chagrined.

Mr. Meatloaf is an Erasmus Hall grad, thank you very much. ECs go without saying, since we can get Fox's U-Bet. But we try to control the calories, so it's an occasional thing.

@Robbo - eggcreams are the best. but not something you can have every day (though that would be nice...)

@lemons and @NYCEater. Thankfully, we can also get Fox's U-Bet locally. But as for every-day use, well, I usually give in every weekend. Truly, truly, ambrosia! ;-]

I love it! I think it is a great substitute for plain old water.
