San Antonio Restaurant Recommendations?

I know there are a couple threads on this topic but I have a few specific requests and it's been awhile since the last San Antonio thread so maybe there are new places?

I'm looking for one Texas-style barbecue place and one upscale (to a point) type place. In case it's relevant, I'm from Chicago and am going to San Antonio THIS weekend. Your help is appreciated!

Boudros on the Banks is semi upscale and the food is delicious.

County Line on the Riverwalk for BBQ

Massive ditto on Boudro's. SO GOOD. Hands down, my favorite place on the Riverwalk.

For BBQ, I've heard Tom's Ribs is fantastic, but it's way out on 410. Ditto for The Smokehouse (one of Texas Monthly's Top 50 of BBQ this year, I think) - highly recommended by others, but way out of downtown. So if you're going to be sticking to the Riverwalk area, then County Line probably is one of your best bets.

Jacala's, oldest family owned Mexican restaurant in San Antonio. Kind of a far drive to get to but totally worth it. Great margaritas too.

You must try the Grey Moss in for upscale dining-- very, very good.

No No not County Line on the Riverwalk. I thought it was terrible.

I've been told that the best Mexican restaurant is Mi Tierra. Didn't have time to try it on my short visit there, but several others I've talked to who've been there say it is great. Website is mitierracafe.com

Would you guys say County Line is indicative of Texas style barbecue? It will be my first Texas BBQ experience.

And yes, thank you everyone for realizing we probably won't have the opportunity to veer to far from the river walk!

Any must-do activities besides see the Alamo?

Thanks for all of your help!

i second mi tierra! delicious food, awesome baked goods as well.

Mi Tierra's is classic and should be on everyones list. Regarding BBQ - County Line is too commercialized now - it's good, but there are way too many BBQ joints which are better. Quick recommendation is Rudy's BBQ. Not sure exactly where it is in San Antonio, but they got started there.

There are a lot of nice places in the King William district (a nice area to visit with beautiful old historic homes). La Frite Bistro in the downtown area is a nice little Belgian Bistro (San Antonio isn't just barbecue and Tex-Mex).

Sorry, but I have to disagree on Rudy's. It's a chain with locations in the San Antonio / Austin area - fun atmosphere (antique gas station decor, cute food presentation, etc) but the barbecue is boring - no real hickory smoke flavor in any of the meats, ribs are mediocre, etc.

I'm not saying I never go to Rudy's, cause God knows there's nothing better than a trip there after a long day of floating the river with a beer in hand, but surely there's got to be a better bbq joint in San Antonio than Rudy's.

If you want the best bbq hands down in the area, I'd almost say it's worth a drive to The Salt Lick (~an hour-ish?) in Driftwood TX, just outside of Austin. I think there would be very few people who would disagree that Salt Lick has the best bbq.

Has anyone been to La Reve? If so, do you have to get the three course $80 meal as a minimum? I was confused by their online menu, especially because TripAdvisor quoted La Reve's price range as $40-$80. We can handle around $40 a person but not $80. Would love to try it if we could! Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks!

I used to live in San Antonio - County Line is not TX Bar-b-que. They don't even smoke their own meat at the downtown location. I do not remember truly amazing bar-b-que in San Antonio, except for my dad's... Black's in Lockhart, TX was pretty good if I remember. Rudy's would do in a pinch, I guess, but its not that great. Tom's Ribs is a chain - I would pass on that. Stick to the Mexican food. Mi Tierra is good and I also highly recommend Jacala - long time Tex-Mex family-owned restaurant - good food, good prices.

I have lived in San Antonio for nearly 40 years. Best hole-in-the wall bbq is The Barbeque Station Restaurant @ 1610 N.E. Loop 410. Phone number is 210-824-9191, Closed Sunday, open Saturday from 11-9. They are a few exits north of the airport. Note: You'll walk out of there smelling like bbq. If you're in town during the week, a great restaurant for lunch is HillY Flores. It's at 1123 N. Flores & phone number is 210-375-6564. Open M-F, from 11-2. Soon will be opening for dinner. The menu ranges from sandwiches and salads to stews and pasta dishes. Enjoy your visit !!

Hillary, I cast my vote with Mi Tierra's, which is neither barbecue nor upscale. You *must* have a margarita in the mariachi bar (which is not the main dining room, it's directly across from the bakery counter). Very atmospheric.

Mi Tierra's is in Market Square, which is a nice place to walk around and check out some shops. Fairly touristy, as most of downtown San Antonio is, but you can find some nice handcrafted Mexican goods (as well cheap ones made in China).

Sorry I can't help you with barbecue. People get so passionate about finding the best barbecue, and really those places are not in town (in San Antonio nor in Austin), but require making a small pilgrimage. However, in light of the fact that not everyone is able or willing to devote half a day to eating beef, I think County Line might be a good choice for you. It is fairly commercial now, but it's not bad. Texas barbecue, fwiw, has to include some smoked brisket and sausage; County Line has both. If you are carless and staying downtown, then it's probably the way to go.

Paloma Blanca

They have a great Sunday Brunch - mexican style!

I created an account here just to say that no trip to San Antonio is complete without a trip to Taco Taco Cafe. I was introduced to this place by my friend who goes to school in SA, and now I'm addicted. If I had the time I would make the 1.5 hour drive from Austin (where I live) just to eat a taco from TTC.

There is usually a line out the door, but don't let that discourage you because the line moves fast and it is completely worth the wait. Also, they were featured in Bon Appetit for having the best taco in America...who could argue with that? I recommend the Taco Norteno.

Here's the website: Taco Taco Cafe

For semi-upscale on the riverwalk, try Paisano's. The house specialty, Shrimp Paesano, is what I order everytime. They have a good wine list too.

I grew up in San Antonio. Yay! Definitely go to Mi Tierra's, it is an institution. Paisano's is very good Italian food. I eat there whenever I go back.
There is an excellent little French restaurant in Olmos Park (my sister often sees Tommy Lee Jones there at lunch) they have a great chef and superb wine list.
Oops, I almost didn't tell you the name, Bistro Vatel.
@itsdeluxe~I'm going to have to try Taco Taco Cafe!
@Chew On That~If itsdeluxe is driving from Austin, which is also a taco mecca, it's worth a visit.
Have a great trip and say Hi to my mom for me!

Upscale Downtown - Bohannan's. The shrimp is the only good thing at Paesano's, Boudro's is good, especially their famous guacamole. All else on the River sucks, IMHO as a resident. Le Reve is very good, but much more than trip advisor says.

Taco Taco is great, closer to downtown is Tito's on So. Alamo. Skip the BBQ in SA. Especially skip the BBQ inside Loop 1604. Mi Tierra is not good Mexican food, but great atmosphere, with roving mariachis, etc. Food pretty much sucks, except for the bakery items.

Picante Grill on Broadway just south of Hildebrand is really good, authentic Mexican food. Food from the interior of Mexico is very good. Award-winning chef, family-owned, nice enough for a sort of special occasion. Not a great bar, but food is memorable. That is where we take out-of-towners for a sit-down Mexican meal.

Bohannan's is where we go for a celebration meal. Maybe the best beef in Texas. And the salads knock my socks off every time.

Biga's on the Banks
Biga's chef and owner Bruce J. Auden has been nominated for the James Beard Foundation Award, The restaurant was also named by Gourmet Magazines as one of America's Best Restaurants.

For BBQ, go to Luling City Meat Market-it's not too far.
And a visit to the historic Liberty Bar is a must-it's a short cab ride from downtown :
http://www.liberty-bar.com/index.html

La Reve is excellent. Chef Andrew Weissman makes incredible food. I went two years ago (maybe a little more) and we spent about 60 per person (but we didn't drink). Remember a great onion tart.

Don't eat on the Riverwalk unless you have to. Really.

El Mirador is a family owned Tex-mex near the Riverwalk, on St. Mary's. Their food is phenomenal.
here is a chowhound review
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/91385

they serve a soup, Sopa Azteca, only on Saturdays, it takes 3 days to make. Good lord it is excellent.

I dig the Liberty Bar, that is a great idea.

Rudy's has never been my thing, some people love it and I hear the one in San Antonio is better so maybe give it a try if you want.

Mi Tierra's food does not suck, it is a little greasy sometimes, but hits the spot. Pure Tex-Mex. I recommend going at 3 or 4 in the morning for the full on Mi Tierra insanity experience.

Henry's Puffy Tacos is an institution and pretty good. I always liked La Fiesta Patio Cafe (near the airforce base maybe?) too.

La Reve though, really good if you feel like you can spring for it.

If not, just go to El Mirador again, you won't be disappointed there.

The Salt Lick is excellent and worth the drive. It hosts a large pit and is exactly as you'd imagine a large BBQ joint to be. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and nearby is a Hindu temple complex with peacocks wandering the grounds which you are free to visit. BYOB, I think. Mapquest it and go! Visit cute nearby towns Gruen and New Braunfels too. Austin is close, and Hill Country is home to many wineries.

Since you are in town on a short trip, I would skip Picante Grill. Nothing terribly special, in my opinion. The riverwalk is somewhat overrated, in my opinion: crowded, and it is easy to end up with a dud restaurant (by all means, stay away from The Original Mexican Food Restaurant and Casa Rio - yikes).
Boudro's is very good, though, but I find it to be more "southwestern" than full on mexican food. Mi Tierra is overpriced and often overcrowded as well (though, it is open 24 hours, which is fun).
I highly recommend the Liberty Bar, and it is about a 5 minute drive from downtown (which will be about 10-15 dollar cab ride). Paloma Blanca is really good, and they have a beautiful patio if the weather is nice, but is farther north on Broadway from Hildebrand.
I've dreamed of going to Le Reve (no pun intended). If you go, enjoy!
Oh, and if you want to go to a divey little place for breakfast, Taco Taco Cafe, on Hildebrand and McCullough is amazing for breakfast tacos. They are only open until 2pm, however.
Have a good trip!

The tableside guacamole at Boudro's is a must. If you end up at County Line, stick to the brisket and sausage - the beef ribs I had at the Riverwalk location were more fat than meat.

omg please do not go on anything within the vicinity of the riverwalk... its all a tourist trap...

for real stuff go here:
- ORIGINAL Rudy's BBQ in Leon Springs, TX
- Luling City Market for BBQ in Luling, TX
- Red Barn for steaks
- County Line not on the riverwalk has really good beef short ribs... yes its a chain but who cares!

You have to go to the Riverwalk! You just don't have to eat there. Get a drink at Durty Nellie's. Touristy but, YOU"RE A TOURIST! I forgot about Little Red Barn, my favorite place as a kid.
And a big YES on Liberty Bar.
Fill us in on your trip when you get back! Tell us what you did.

I really enjoyed the original Rudy's--great fatty brisket. And creamed corn! Yum.

For fine dining in downtown San Antonio, I really enjoyed Citrus. Delicious, seasonal, and pretty inventive.

oh, and The Guenther House in the King William district (historic district South of downtown I think). There are lots of Germans and Czechs in central Texas (one of the reasons the barbecue is so good) and their contributions to baked goods are not to be missed.

food at Guenther House is not the best, but the baked goods in the morning are phenomenal, and I hear the breakfasts are pretty fine. and they have a flour museum.

great biscuits and by far, I swear, the best cinnamon rolls I have ever had. they run out of most things almost every day so don't go late.

I second Guenther House! And a trip to the Texas Hill Country if you have time

If Boudro's is too crowded, go to Zinc - they're owned by the same people.

For Mexican, I'd suggest La Fogata, Paloma Blanca, and La Fonda on Main.

The Sandbar is awesome. It's a tiny seafood restaurant right next to Le Reve, same owner.

I second Taco Taco Cafe. Afterwards, you can stop at the Olmos Bharmacy for a Guiness milkshake and some fried pickles.

I'm a Texas native (Houston) and one of my good friends went to Trinity in S.A., whenever I went to visit her we always had to go to Panchito's. It's right by the university, nothing fancy but it's great tex-mex, and awesome margaritas too. But the reason we went there every time was for their special queso which has chile con carne AND guacamole in it! Sounds a little strange but it's ammmmmazing.
Also, my favorite Houston fajita place is supposed to be opening a location in San A, it's called Lupe Tortilla's. If it's open you should definitely go.
Beware of the river walk-- major tourist trap.
I agree with many of the people who suggested getting out of the city for BBQ. Luling City Meat Market and Kreutz's market have stellar reputations.
Lastly, I tell anyone visiting Texas to go to Whataburger. It's a fast food burger chain, but I'm telling you the burgers are GREAT. It's open 24 hours so it's a good place to go after a late night, or as a pit stop on the road. They're located all over, you can't miss their pointed orange and white roofs. Trust me on this one.
Happy eating!

I spent a day eating tacos in San Antonio and had a lot of fun. I'd highly recommend Rosario's, as well as the street vendors in the mercado area for puffy tacos. You can read more about both and all the other spots here.

El Mirador is fantastic and cheap for any meal

Just want to report back about my trip to San Antonio! :)

Friday night we took a river cruise and ate dinner at Boudro's at an outside table. The guacamole and margaritas were fabulous and the menu was extremely interesting. We went with the blackened prime rib and a lobster dish which were both excellent but possibility a bit over-seasoned.

Saturday, we went to Mi Tierra for brunch and dessert. I went with the beef jerky omelette (one of their specialities) and my boyfriend had the chalupas. For dessert we had churros, pumpkin empanadas and strawberry jaivas. Such a fun place! After that we went to see the Alamo and walked around the city before we went to the Tower of the Americas. We had some drinks a shrimp and crab fondue appetizer there (all very good!). After that, we had a late dinner at County Line bbq (I know many of you advised against this but the truth is we were very limited without a car and many of the outer skirt barbecue places had limited hours). It was good though! I loved my barbecue brisket, hadn't anything that tasty in a long time.

In fact, we liked it so much...we went back on Sunday for lunch. We were craving more barbecue and nothing else was open (aka Bill Miller's, the only other bbq place near the Riverwalk). We wanted to go to Schilo's, a German deli, for lunch but they were closed on Sunday too. What's with everything closing on Sunday?

Anyway it was all very tasty and a lot of fun! Thank you again for all of your help. I'll be writing blog posts on each of these restaurants throughout the coming week.

Glad you had a good time! I need to try Boudro's next time we take the weekend trip from Houston. So I got a tip too! San Antonio is a fantastic town, it's like being in Mexico, but without the passport.
