Sagatiba Cachaca: Any Tips for Making Caipirinhas?
My landlord left a bottle behind in my apartment. I would like to give it a shot by making caipirinha, which looks similar to a mojito. Any tips?

Caipirinha is simply lime, sugar and cachaca. So little to mess up, but I've found most bars/restaurants don't even know what one is let alone how to make a good one. There's a simple recipe on the Sagatiba site.

Do watch out for them: this isnt limeade and they will kick your ...er....behind if you drink them like mojitos.

Good to know, the liquor smells really strong, haha!

yes, muddle the lime(s) and sugar very well .... and i always liked to top them off with a hit of club.... cachaca is like south american moonshine.... i tend to prefer the minty flavor of a mojito with rum (or vodka)... caipirinha's are a totally blow your mind experience (and your body, too)...

Is Sagatiba a name brand?

we do a little club soda too....I like to be able to drink one "whole" drink without passing out. We had friends who had lived in Brazil and they would host these great parties where we would have these dynamite little cocktails and then sit down to the traditional many grilled meats. Probably should have eaten first as it turns out!

a little more detail for you on how to make a good caipirinha. (When using some of the more premium brands of cachaca you will find it much easier to make a great caipirinha. The reputation of cachaca as 'moonshine' or very harsh is quickly changing). Remember when tequila used to have a worm in it and now there are many very good premium brands?
Heres the recipe:
take a lime and cut off the ends and slice 1/2 of the lime into chunks
Place these limes in a glass and add 2 teaspoons of superfine sugar.
Muddle the limes and sugar together until most of the sugar is dissolved (about 10 seconds should do it)
add plenty of ice
Then add 2 oz of cachaca (you can use a jigger if you have one to make sure the measurement is correct)
shake really well
enjoy!
Once you get used to making caipirinhas you can swap out limes for many other fruits: strawberries, kiwi, mango, etc.
nothing better then a well made caipirinha

Lethal but utterly delicious. But I'm so old I remember when daquiris didn't come in flavors, just lime, simple syrup and rum. But they didn't seem quite so intense in their effect. But perhaps my liver was younger, too.

Ok, so I made one last night, following the amounts above from jkeller16.
Oh my, that was sooo good! Sweet and tart and strong! I enjoy my cocktails and have been known to put a few away.
I had one and was done.

Yes, Sagatiba is a brand.

@jkeller16, that would explain why I don't remember capirinhas being as "lethal" as so many posters claim they are.

ah caipirinhas... The regular type (lime, sugar and cachaca) was looked down to until a few years ago as a tourists/poor taste drink... until premium cachacas like sagatiba came up. Ooohhh... the stronger types do make one feel like they were hit by a train in the morning.
Usually a pestle is used to muddle the lime and sugar together. There are many other versions that are more popular: Caipiroska - made with vodka instead, and Saqueritas - Made with sake... or shochu if one wants a bit more punch... As far as fruits go, I've seen them made with everything - from passion fruit and lime, pineapple and strawberries, to kiwi fruit and lychees.

oh yeah, and if the caipirinha is too strong at first, just let the drink sit a bit. As the ice melts it gets easier to down.
