Safety and Ethiopian Beef Kitfo

So, I ordered kitfo at an Ethiopian restaurant last night. Somehow, it escaped my knowledge that this was rare/raw (or mostly rare, anyway) beef. I attribute this to the fact that it was covered in a strong, spicy sauce and had a firm texture. Anyway, they packaged the leftovers up for me to take home...I was eating some of the bread that the meat was sitting on today and chatting with someone and they were horrified that I was eating these leftovers. Now I'm worried, too. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thoughts, stories, comments?

Honestly I have had a really bad experience with Ethiopian food and have stayed away ever since.

if it a sketchy resto. i'd be a bit worried. if it seems like a decent place your fine. i find most people are way too worried about food-born illness. i have a feeling we all get it more often then we think. a couple trips to the loo in one day isn't so bad.

It's not a sketchy restaurant - I've eaten there before (though not this dish) and it's very popular. It probably will be fine, but I was curious if anyone had any info/opinions on this.

@juliebugsmama - What, if you don't mind me asking, was your experience?

I love kitfo and similar dishes in Korean and Japanese restaurants. I've eaten raw/super-rare beef dozens of times, and I've never had a problem. Most restaurants brave enough to serve rare meat are also cautious enough to know how to safely handle it. I wouldn't recommend it if you're pregnant, nursing, have a compromised immune system, etc., but if you're young and healthy, eat up.

I've had kitfo before at relatively sketchy Ethiopian restaurants in Denver. I've never had trouble, but I understand your worry. The first time I ordered it, I didn't know it was raw, but I grew to really like it. I think restaurants do what they can to ensure it's safe, but anytime you eat raw meat you're taking the risk.
