Ribs and ... Ice Cream? What do you eat when you're blue?

In a trailer for a movie, a woman yells a bit of advice from a park bench "Get yourself some ribs and some ice cream, 'cause you have been dumped!" In pop culture, women are often seen turning to cheesecake, men beer. But in the real world, what are your "feel better" eats?

A sleeve of Fig Newtons and some Chai tea.

Anything salty and starchy: french fries, popcorn, pasta puttanesca, pizza with lots of hot sauce dribbled on, etc. And lots of hot tea - not alcohol, although I do drink...alcohol just never seems to offer the kind of soothing I'm looking for when I'm sad.

Nothing. A glass of wine, maybe, but really nothing. I physically can't eat when I'm excited (both bad or good excited), upset, nervous or ill. I usually go for a walk (unless I'm ill, then I crawl into bed).

I usually can't eat at/in connection with really big events in my life for that reason, which is precisely why I ended up not having a single bite when I was at my little brother's wedding or at my own, or not eating for a week after my Mum passed away. I know - very different instances/emotions, same physical reaction - can't eat.

@brooke29; Yeah, I'm exactly the same. It's really hard on our bodies too. I've come close to passing out at times during high-stress periods, but cannot force food down despite that. I turn to something like a milk shake and drink as much of that as I can, it's calories and energy but easier to get down than solid food. It's not something that I'm 'eating' for enjoyment though. In fact, a Slim Fast 'shake' will do. I can't get past the smell of the (so-called) 'nutritional shakes' but Slim Fast isn't too bad.

@brooke- I third that. I will not eat a single morsel of food when singing the blues, why bother, I loose my appetite completely. I just drink beer. I only eat when I am not singing the blues so can enjoy it.

I don't lose my appetite when I'm sad or stressed (or ever, really), but I'm also not one to binge or crave particular foods in order to feel better. I think that would make me feel worse. When the going gets rough I usually spend more time in the gym or out running.

Sunday Gravy with whatever macaroni I have in the house. If it's a really devastating blow, I'll fourth the above appetite-losers. Can't touch food if I've really been thrown for a loop.

If I am super blue, I will go out and gorge myself on some Chinese Buffet.

I fifth the no eating If i am really really sad. But for times when I just have a bad day, I usually crave some spicy food and beer. Or a pizza with the works.

Ben & Jerry's Whirled Peace

Kraft deluxe mac & cheese or Marie Calendar cheesy chicken pot pie, possibly followed by Ben & Jerry's Phish Food, or United Dairy Farmer's Peanut Butter & Chip.

I know I am possibly an odd one here, but I can't tell you the last time I experienced a bad day or any kind of high stress. I am generally of an even temperament. I am always happy. I love life. I love my job. I love food. It's all good!

Is it terrible that I'm jealous of all you people who can't eat when you're sad? At least you're not sad AND bloaty! I fit perfectly into the cheesecake stereotype, btw.

Anything sweet is my first choice - cheesecake, ice cream, brownies, cookie dough, or chocolate chips dropped into a jar of peanut butter. But if I need an actual meal, it's usually pizza or Mexican food. It's hard to stay blue if you drink enough margaritas.

@izzy- where have yyou been, I miss you?

@izatryt - Whoa, what's your secret?! I'm generally happy with life, but I usually have at least two high-stress days/week...
