The Corn Man

Posted by PumpkinBear, January 10, 2009

So, I believe I've posted about my corn man before, but I happened to mention him in a previous post and a few people asked.

Here in L.A., street food is really big, especially when it comes to Mexican food. I myself am Mexican and have always lived in predominantly Mexican neighborhoods, which means I've always had a corn man and everyone I grew up with has always had one.

Essentially, he's just a guy who walks around with yummy treats in a shopping cart. He sells these pinwheel things that I can't for the life of me figure out. I think they're pinwheel pasta that's been deep fried. For a buck, you can get a huge bag of puffed pasta slathered in lime juice and chili. During the summer he has a huge block of ice and sells raspados and he always, ALWAYS sells corn, which is why he's the corn man after all.

I've heard people say it's unsanitary, it's gross, it's blah blah blah. Screw those people. The corn man has a massive steaming bucket of huge, sweet white corn cobs that he puts on a stick. For the price of a dollar he will slather that corn in a number of condiments, but as far as I'm concerned it's "everything" or nothing. An everything corn is corn slathered in mayo., butter, parm and chili. I've tried to recreate this holy thing while living in Arizona, but it can't be done. It will never taste like the corn man's corn.
