Pancakes or Waffles & What Goes With Them?

Waffles, if I have a choice. Pancakes kind of plop in my tummy and stay there, uncomfortably so. However, they are great for a crowd, as I can make them on my humongous griddle and keep them hot in the oven. I can make a lot more pancakes in much less time than waffles. I wish I had a humongous waffle maker!

Waffles can be big Belgians with fresh strawberries, powdered sugar and whipped cream.

Waffles can be hot and buttery with real maple syrup filling the grids. I like them crusty on the outside and still soft and hot on the inside. I like fruit on breakfast waffles, too - especially hot blueberry syrup with lots of whole blueberries. If I'm really, really hungry I like them with eggs and sausage and I wouldn't turn down a piece of bacon. A few orange segments would hit the spot and so would a bottomless cup of coffee. This breakfast is ideal for a weekend brunch, any night dinner, and late, late night after partying. I'd probably want a nap within a few hours. LOL

Boy, I can't remember the last time I had a really good waffle. My waffle iron only makes little ones, and it also makes a mess. Do you have a good one? Tell us about it?

I prefer waffles with butter and syrup. Or just butter. Never just syrup.

Pancakes, on the other hand...I'll eat them, but I don't like syrup on them. It's got to be butter only.

Potato pancakes are a whole 'nother story. Put those as an option, and I'll let you have ALL my waffles and pancakes. And I'll eat my potato pancakes with sour cream on them, and if there's apple sauce, I'll eat that separately, thank you.

We make pancakes more often, for some reason, but I can't choose, I really love them both. If I really had to choose though, sadly, I'd probably have to abandon waffles (of course, now I'm thinking that I'll be making waffles this coming Saturday:-) Speaking of which, my waffle-maker only makes two at a time, but I have two of them, and I use both at the same time - it makes the process significantly faster, because seriously, who has the patience to make two waffles at a time? Surely not me).

I love the same stuff on both - sour cream topped with blueberry syrup. If I don't have blueberry syrup, any homemade jam or preserves will do, but raspberry would be my first choice. I really don't care for maple syrup with either pancakes or waffles.

If I'm really hungry - I'll top either one (waffle or pancake) with an over easy (or poached) egg, bacon and ketchup.

Waffles all the way, but because I don't have a 110 waffle iron (sob) I'm stuck with pancakes for at least another year and 3 months...

I like waffles with butter, powdered sugar and faux maple syrup (can't stand the real stuff, sorry) or strawberries and whipped cream.

Pancakes with butter and syrup, and if it's at my local cafe, they put diced apples on, which isn't as disgusting as it sounds!

Someday, I want an old-fashioned stovetop waffle iron. Till then I'll make Mark Bittman's Fluffy Pancakes (you make a half-recipe of pancake batter, add four egg yolks, and whip and fold in the four egg whites). It works very well for buckwheat pancakes. With blueberries, even.

Mark Bittman is my new pretend boyfriend.

Waffles- I like Belgium with blueberry syrup and loads of whipped cream on top and it has to be with bacon .

Pancakes- Butter and syrup.
At times I like them with bananas in them but that is a mood thing.

I like both, but prefer waffles. Lots of fresh berries and whipped cream on them, with a couple big sausage patties with 'em. Pancakes, just butter and real maple syrup.

Waffles and Fried Chicken! with plenty of real maple syrup...

So difficult to choose. I guess I will have to go with pancakes, specifically that one center bite of the melting butter, maple syrup, slight tension of the top of the pancake and the soft, creamy spongyness of the center as the ultimate pancake moment. But that center square of waffle has its charms, too.

I usually eat pancakes with just a little maple syrup, nothing else. But having grown up having many lovely variations, from blueberry with whipped butter, to strawberry or apple-topped Belgium waffles, it is hard to choose. My favorite order was silver dollar pancakes at Perkins as a kind. The only stipulation is butter, never whipped cream!

I prefer waffles to pancakes, but don't have a waffle iron so for me they're diner food. I like them with crispy bacon or sausage, butter and a good amount of real maple syrup. A side of eggs is also nice.

I'm not a fan of syrup on pancakes. I prefer them just slathered with butter.

The exception to this is Martha Stewart's recipe for cornmeal pancakes and a cranberry maple syrup that is awesome. It's the only time I'll ever use syrup on them.

pancakes

For the syrup, (can't find the link) it's pretty much 1 cup cranberries/1 cup maple syrup cooked over med heat until the berries burst. Done.

These also go extraordinarily well with bacon and or sausage.

I'm a big fan of plain old buttermilk pancakes or waffles with just syrup and a fried egg on top. The combination of the syrup and the egg yolk makes this fabulous sweet and savory goodness that can't get any better... unless you add bacon of course.

Waffles! Finally invested in a good waffle maker and SO and I both went mad with joy. I like regular waffles with just a little butter no syrup thanks But I also have started making waffles with leftover mashed and some bacon bits fresh parsley and some good parm yummy. a waffley type of tater pancake with bacony goodness where's the bad? ;-)

I make waffles about 3 times a year. However pancakes I make often and I vary my flavors. If we have fresh berries or even frozen ones they are going in. If I have apples or bananas they are going in. Ricotta or yogurt oh yea. Cranberries sure why not. You never know what pancake and what syrup is going to be on the menu here.
I don't limit us to just maple syrup. I like to make turkey sausage, country sausage, bacon or pork roll with pancakes or waffles.

butter and real maple syrup - OR - conf. sugar and whipped cream

I forgot to say, I love waffles but can't stand pancakes (unless they're super thin and crispy).

Pancakes!! I usually eat them with butter and real maple syrup, but I recently bought a bottle of blueberry sauce from TJ's that is absolutely phenomenal on pancakes.

Can't remember the last time I had waffles.....Now pancakes gotta be buckwheat plop on top of a smear of blis bourbon maple syrup and two overeasy eggs on top..........nervana on a plate!!

my mom used to make us homemade waffles sandwiches on sunday nights -- served with vanilla, chocolate & strawberry ice cream sliced out of the half-gallon container....

and as for pancakes, i prefer mine super thin and lacy.... with sweet butter, powdered sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon.

Love 'em both. I don't know that I could ever decide, unless I had a guarantee the pancakes would always be my mother's. I don't even try to make them myself anymore - they just aren't even close to hers. Anyway, my favorite way to eat them is with just butter and a little white sugar sprinkled on top, although high-quality maple syrup is nice too. Love waffles as well, but prefer them with fruit (strawberries, blueberries, & bananas) and whipped cream on top. Waffles are great for dessert too...top with ice cream, chocolate sauce, peanut butter, etc...

OMFG I love pancakes! My favorite is probably pecan pancakes smothered in an unimaginable amount of syrup. Back in college, when everyone ended a night out eating pizza or burritos, I would come home and make myself pancakes. Mmmmm memories.

chiasi, you can do the maple syrup thing with blueberries as well as crannies and it's great. I'm a syrup (or sugared fruit that's given up its juices) but no butter person myself. Love butter, but prefer to save the calories. Pancakes pop up more frequently here than waffles, and I tend to order them rather than waffles when I'm out, but as far as cooking for a crowd goes, I've successfully done waffles in advance, frozen them and re-heated them on cookie-cooling racks set over sheet pans in the oven when I'm faced with more than 6 at the breakfast/brunch table. I had surprisingly good waffles on a recent road trip at the breakfast bars in our hotels; cook them yourself, pay attention to the timer, get them out fast, and crisp-crisp-crisp.

Nigella says to crumble crisp bacon over the top of pancakes with syrup, and that seems like a good system. But I admit the combo of pork sausage and syrup is what floats my personal boat.

Our Norwegian grandson who grew up bilingual, was in NYC with us at age 16, and we went to a coffee shop. "Oooh," he said, on reading the menu, "they have pancakes. Can I have pancakes?" "Of course," I said. "Can I have pancakes WITH SYRUP?" That was when I realized that it's butter-and-sugar there; syrup was a big deal to him. And waffles are snack food in Norway; Mom's Clubs sell waffles at school functions the way they might run a soda-and-chips stand at soccer games here. Whipped cream and fruit or chocolate syrup.

Pancakes! With just butter or with butter and real "fancy" (grade A, light amber) maple syrup. Preferably from MA, but VT is a good second. I only recently discovered that I don't hate all maple syrup, and my world is now a better place. Fresh blueberries in the pancakes, or sometimes bananas and walnuts. Never whipped cream. Usually with a poached egg on the side.
My SO prefers waffles, but I haven't invested in a waffle iron yet since I don't like them. If he wants waffles, he has to buy his own iron!

way on both, i don't have a waffle iron but i make buttermilk pancakes. i need a lb of butter and a bottle of sweet maple to eat them. to bad i already ate. maybe for lunch. thanks alot @ perky that's what i'll be thinking about all day. guess i'll put the ribs back in the fridge cause they just won't do the trick now. lol

I used to be a waffle girl (my mom's are SO good), but I can't bring myself to buy a waffle maker ... so I've moved on to pancakes. I really like cottage cheese pancakes, and unless berries' prices go through the roof, I like to make berry syrup with berries, a small thing of berry applesauce (which I have on hand for granola making nomnomnom), and maple syrup (lovelovelove my Canadian friend who brought me a bottle of pure Canadian maple syrup for Christmas - best gift ever!) all cooked down till the berries 'splode into each other.

The bf is a big fan of fruit in the pancake, but I'd rather put the fruit in the syrup. A small pad of butter on each pancake is a must! And since I don't have a griddle, I use my cast iron skillets so that they cook evenly. Maybe I'll make some tomorrow morning...

Either, but I don't make waffles often because I hate cleaning the waffle iron and my waffles never stay crispy. Very disappointing.

I LOVE sausage as a side and usually dip it in the syrup. I'll eat the fake or the real but prefer real maple syrup.

My 14 y/o made pancakes for supper the other night when the husband and I were both too ill to get off the couch. Such a good boy!

The most disappointing waffle I had at a restaurant was at- get this- a Waffle House in Colorado Springs! It should have cooked longer and wasn't very big. You'd think since the place is named WAFFLE HOUSE they could churn out some killer waffles but sadly, they failed.

Forgot to mention - sometimes I make a gigantic pancake with sausage and apples in a cast iron skillet, it's more like a sausage & apple cake...right now, I'm not sure why I don't make it more often! I still eat it with sour cream and blueberry syrup.

Okay, since I just had some this morning in my company cafeteria (we actually have really great food, and these are no exception) can I make a vote for French Toast instead? With syrup, but no butter. Oh, the heaven!

But normally, if I had a choice, a nice Belgian waffle, or my mother's pancakes. Waffles always plain, pancakes with a *light* amount of pure maple syrup.

Waffes--Fried chicken and maple syrup

Waffles - definately. I like to crumble cooked bacon into the batter, then make them way crispy. Top with butter only.

I do love pancakes too. Stir leftover oatmeal into the batter, and you have pancakes to die for . Just butter of course. I'm really not into sweet breakfasts!

I LOVE when the squares in waffles fill up with butter and syrup. It's the best! But I also love pancakes...blueberry...banana..chocolate chip, so many good ones it's hard to choose!

I actually had an awesome cranberry almond pancake the other day at a brunch place. It was beyond delicious.

Hillary
Chew on That

Peanut butter and jam--on either!

Oh, my 13 year old son makes the most amazing waffles. They're multi-grain, I suppose, with some oatmeal and whole wheat flour in there, but they're light and airy and crispy and soft inside and vanilla scented and amazing. Everyone in the family eats theirs different. I prefer yogurt and blueberries on mine, drizzled with honey. 13 y.o. son eats his with strawberry jam and butter. 10 y.o. son eats his with butter and maple syrup. 7 y.o. son eats his with butter, pomegranate jelly, and maple syrup. My husband has butter, syrup, and a fried egg on top, with the yolk nice and runny so he can pour some syrup right in it for that sweet/salty combo.
The only down side is that life is too busy most days for that sort of a breakfast anymore. *sigh* I'm thinking we'll need to have waffles for dinner soon.

Pancakes....with thick sliced bacon, and real maple syrup.....Grade B, medium amber, I always buy it from a local producer.

Does anyone make the savoury pancakes that are so famous in The Netherlands? They have many "Pancake Houses" where you can buy both sweet and savoury pancakes. They are totally a different consistency than our American ones - sort of between a crepe and an American pancake. They do not rise much. They are wonderful. We had several very cheap meals in Amsterdam of "pannekoeken" - one of mine was with pizza toppings (not the red sauce), it was so good. I have not been able to reproduce the batter back here in Canada.

I must say, I am dismal making pancakes - they are just something I do not do well - they stick, they are tough, they have wacky shapes, they are overcooked - or - undercooked, I just don't have a deft enough hand. Any ideas for improvement?

Waffles! I just got one of those professional waffle makers for Christmas and I LOVE it. It makes huge waffles. Now I am just messing with different kinds of recipes to figure out which ones I like the best. I love to serve them with bacon or sausage to offset the sweetness of the waffle and syrup.

@bareneed ~ I don't make them much anymore, but I couldn't do it without an electric griddle on high heat. Keep it greased, watch for bubbles breaking and edges getting dry and then flip. Side two doesn't take long. I also keep the oven on around 250 and keep the cooked pancakes warm until I'm finished making them all, so I can sit and enjoy breakfast (or supper or whatever) with everyone else. It also helps to have hot toppings - maple or blueberry syrup or whatever you're serving with them. I always found that the first pancake never looks too pretty, but you get a real good idea if your griddle is too hot or not hot enough. Hope that helps.

A great hot waffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top is so delicious.
From one of Donnies daughters. Oh bye the way Hi.

I agree @one of Donnie's daughters. How about adding a few strawberries or sliced peaches or blueberries? Any of those sound good with waffles and ice cream? Nice to meet you!

They're so similar, yet so different. I'm a waffles girl all the way and the only thing that goes best with waffles is friend chicken. There's a place here in Los Angeles called Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. Telling people who've never eaten the combination before that it's DELICIOUS is difficult because they look at you like a freak. The perfect bite consists of waffle slathered in butter and syrup and crispy, juicy fried chicken with a touch of Louisiana hot sauce on top. It sounds disgusting, right? It is SO GOOD.

@ PerkyMac I think thats a great idea. Next time I have waffles and ice cream I think I might add fruit. Any kind. One last thing nice to meet you too.

@PumkinBear -- Hmmm, waffles and fried chicken?? I have seen signs outside places that serve that combo, but never tried it. But, being the adventurous foodie that I am, I would give it a try. But I thought you were supposed to eat them with honey, not LA hot sauce!

I am in the waffle-lovers camp and like mine with butter and maple syrup (either real or Log Cabin). I have both a Begian waffle maker and a heart-shaped one that I got about 20 years ago . . . I use it every year at Valentines Day to make heart shaped waffles with strawberries.

My newest love, however, is the Dutch Baby baked pancake. I bought a mix at Williams Sonoma and made one in my cast iron skillet the other day and it was SO good! I used to get them every year when we went to Portland at the Mallory Hotel restaurant and now I know how to make my very own : ) A dusting of powdered sugar, a squeeze of lemon juice and a bit of syrup and I'm content for the day.

@PumpkinBear ~ I've never tried waffles and fried chicken either, but I love both. I would have guessed that the waffles were dry and am really surprised about the syrup. Hey @one of Donnie's daughters......would you try it, too? I'm game. Who's cookin'?

@ Perky Mac My mom cooks dinner in the week,but I help her on Sundays. I never ate it before. If so, I would have waffles, ice cream, and fruit in a bowl,and I would have the fried chicken and a sauce on it on a plate. Nooooooooooooooooooo hot sauce EVER for me or syrup. Donnies one daughter

@Donnies one daughter (what happened to your sister?) ~ no hot sauce for me either, ever. Oops, I meant Noooooooooooone for me! Syrup, maybe, although I've never had anything sweet with fried chicken. I live in the NE and they often serve little packets of honey with the biscuits that come with take-out fried chicken, but I save them for morning toast.

Are you in school during the week? What grade? I'm a grandma and proud of it! ;-)

@ Perky Mac Im in fourth grade at the age of 10. My sister is in seventh grade at the age of 13. My brother in high school at the age of 14. I love being in the kitchen with my mom whether its cooking or baking. Im the same person that has been talking to you from the start. I am an hour and a few minutes past my bedtime so I have to go. So bye. Nice to talk to you. From donnies daughter ( when Im on call me dd).

Can I pick both? If I had to choose though, it would depend on what kind of pancakes and waffles we're talking about. Any pancakes vs. skinny waffles, like you get at the Waffle House, and it's pancakes, no contest. Plain buttermilk pancakes vs. Belgian waffle, and I'll take the waffle. Pancakes with fruit vs. Belgian waffle, and it depends on my mood. Oatmeal or whole grain pancakes vs. any waffle, and I'll take the pancakes.

I don't like toppings on my pancakes or waffles. If you want to throw something like fruit or peanut butter in the batter, I'm cool with that, but no butter or syrup or anything on top for me. Occasionally I'll partake in some waffles and ice cream, but that's it.

forgot to ask if crepes count? I love them with almost anything in - chicken paprikash or chocolate syrup are my favorites!

The best waffle I ever had was at the Country Inn in Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX - they have make your own waffles for breakfast, and they're shaped like Texas. I had the same batter, in the same brand of waffle iron, but normal shaped at a different hotel and it was not as good...

Actually the waffles are the entire reason I stay at this hotel when I go to TX on business :-)

Having had Chicken and Waffles, I can say, without hesitation, that it's a match made in heaven. The sweetness of the syrup, the crunch and salt of the chicken, the texture of the waffles. It's really, really good.

And tell me how you eat the chicken-n-waffles? It's hard for me to imagine Americans eating fried chicken with a knife and fork. But it's hard for me to imagine anyone eating waffles and syrup with their fingers. Details, please!

Yes, what lemons asked!

If I am craving something sweet: maple or chocolate syrup. For something savory: basil pesto and butter.

@lemons/PerkyMac - there's two schools of thought on this, and both methods require a knife and fork. One is to serve the chicken on the side, the waffles covered in butter and syrup and you eat the chicken one bite, the waffle the other, or then put them both together on the fork, as one would with bacon or sausage. The other is the chicken is dumped right on top of the waffle, syrup over all and you dig in. On the occasions that I've had it, I do a hybrid. I cut the chicken meat off the bone in as large pieces as I can, syrup the waffles, top with the chicken meat, and with knife and fork, go to town. That way the skin still keeps it's crunch but you still have the sweet salty thing happening.

Wow - 51 responses so far!

I do many flavors of both pancakes and waffles so the first layer of flavor varies.

As for toppings - the sky's the limit on either...

* Fresh berries
* Whipped Cream
* Chocolate sauce (dessert crepes)
* Apple Butter
* Peanut Butter
* Favorite fruit preserves
* Honey
* Pure maple syrup - no substitutes

Waffle ice cream sandwiches!
