As soon as I got mine home I made brioche. Because I love it, and because it's impossible for a mortal to make by hand.
Next big project was a batch of Tartine croissants. Because brioche was too easy, I wanted to suffer through multiple rolling and turning sessions, but moreso because I hadn't had a proper butter croissant in years.

I was just given one for Christmas and would love recipe recommendations, especially of the bread-y variety.
@renzata- would you mind sharing your brioche recipe? Not sure I'm ready for croissants. Yet. :)

you're all making me so jealous. i don't have one, and i have a recipe from john thorne for "the best cookie in the world" which states, do NOT make this if you don't have a stand mixer...

Congrats!
I use mine for everything, but I second the bread suggestion... it is so nice to watch the dough hook cut my hand kneading down to a coupla seconds!
There is actually a recipe book that is called "The Mixer Bible" that has a lot of very cool recipes in it geared specifically for stand mixers. I got mine at Amazon.com.
Enjoy!

Happy Birthday!!
If you've never had a stand mixer before, I have to add my vote for some type of bread - yeast risen dough. You could do pizza, foccaccia, or good old bread baked in a loaf pan.
A birthday cake for yourself would have been nice but you'll really witness the power of the KA if you make bread in some incarnation. Enjoy!

I also just got a KitchenAid from my in-laws for Christmas (they got me a classic, which I returned and upgraded to an Artisan), and my first big KA project this weekend is going to be brioche! I'm using Dorie Greenspan's recipe in her Baking: From my home to yours book (the golden brioche loaves). I plan to make 2 loaves and use one to made almond brioche. :)

I'm going down the road less taken on this one, and say that you should make a perfect batch of mashed/whipped potatoes. I love using my cobalt blue Artisan Kitchen Aid mixer for this. I admit I have no upper arm strength, and mashing potatoes by hand was always rough for me. I love watching plain old tubers turn into clouds of buttery, creamy heaven with the help of my mixer! (I add sour cream, some shredded cheddar, whole milk, butter, salt, and load of black pepper -- and then when I serve them, I add crumbled bacon and scallions or chives.)

I got the professional for Christmas and need a good recipe to break it in ... I am a strict vegetarian, though, so buttery, eggy things are out. I'd love to do a whole wheat yeast bread ...

renee the first thing you should make is plane reservations to alabama. to drop off the mixer with me ;-) Congrats on the new mixer hun and Happy Birthday! Seriously I would splurge and make a big batch of homemade marshmellows! then curl up with some awesome hot coccoa and relax! (a shot of malibu is terrific in chocolate)

Bread, then marshmallows. For your first loaf of bread, I don't think you need to do anything fantastic - just pull a recipe out of a cookbook that you have handy (I still make sandwich bread from a Joy of Cooking recipe).
For the marshmallows, I like the Barefoot Contessa's recipe (available on food network's site). She gives enough information for a first-timer to have success.

Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. I think I will make bread, I have NEVER made any that actually rose and tasted like bread.
