Greek Meal at NYC's Kefi Last Night Was Very Tasty
We wanted to experience a Michael Psilakis meal so we opted for his newly expanded Kefi on the Upper West Side.
Aside from a rather cold greeting by the hostesses when we entered just before 5 p.m., our evening continued to warm up nicely thereafter. We shared two waves of meze: The spreads served with pita were fresh and delicious, perhaps one of the best versions of this sampler I've ever had. The baccala (cod) was delicious on its bed of mashed potato. Keftedes, Greek meatballs, were incredibly good in their olive and tomato gravy, while the goat cheese dumplings (sort of like quenelles) in their pine nut, olive and tomato gravy were rich and decadent.
Our servers were very friendly and accommodating to our needs. As we left and the tri-level place had filled, even the hostesses turned warm. They had their hands full too from some complaining customers during the evening.
Prices, by the way, are quite reasonable. We will return.

I wish my experience went that well! I was there on Saturday night, and we were seated 50 mins after our reservation, despite being told repeatedly (by Donatella herself) that it would only be 10 more mins. 20+ mins to get our spreads and then after I placed my order for the dumplings, I was told that they had run out. I went with a few girlfriends and the restaurant choice was mine, so I was glad it was my dish they had run out of and not one of theirs. I was embarrassed enough by the wait. I understand that they just re-opened so I'll give them some time to get the kinks worked out before I go back again...and I won't be there on a Saturday night.

I was there on Saturday night as well, with a reservation. We (4 people) were seated on time and had a great meal. Four appetizers, four main courses, and 2 bottles of wine for under $200. I thought the value and food were above average for NYC. I've eaten at the old space twice - one of those experiences was good, the other OK. I think the new location and space is an improvement over the old. I look forward to more solid meals there...I will say we did wait a tad long for our main courses, but knowing that they just reopened we were understanding. I sat upstairs but think that the lower level would probably be more enjoyable for my next visit.
