My birthday is saturday. Thoughts on where to eat, please?
For the past two years I have had wonderful birthday dinners at 9th street market. Today the boyfriend painfully reminded me that I would need to pick a new locale for the special occasion. My first instinct was to say Marlow and Sons because like 9th St. it has the same warm ambiance, but then I thought maybe I should ask the masses. He has suggested market table, chestnut, and the general greene. All reviews seem positive but I just wondered if there were any other places I should consider that is comparable to the experiences I have had at 9th and M&S, mainly good food, and an intimate environment (tiny tea lights optional).

I have never been to NY but I wish that you will have a very special day and have a special birthday dinner where ever you choose to go. Let us know how it goes please. Happy birthday to you.............

I have been to Babbo for birthdays, Daniel and Cafe Boulud. You might be able to get into Cafe Boulud or ask for cancellations. I don't know the restaurants you mentioned, but tell us which cuisine you enjoy, that would help. Red Cat is supposed to be good too, and Oceana just got an excellent review in the Times, it is a neglected, delicious restaurant, so you might have luck there. Also Aquagrill is great too, if you enjoy seafood.

Also Roberto Passon is a good choice, reasonable Italian in Hell's Kitchen.

Please do not go to General Greene for your birthday--service can be terrible. The place is fine, but not worth risking on a special occasion. If you love the food and ambiance at Marlow, then Chestnut or Market Table (or little Owl) would be comparable, with the Owl approaching Marlow in Hipness quotient.
Happy bday.

I've had more pleasureable dining experiences in Philly if you all feel like taking a ride!
We're supposed to have the some of the best steak houses in the country

Happy birthday!!
Chestnut and Market Table are great options, and I definitely second Little Owl.
Blue Hill at Stone Barns is also exceptional for a special occasion, if you don't mind the trek...

Little Owl is great, but it is LITTLE, so you'd better get on the phone if you want to try for a res this weekend!

Market Table for sure - if you want a guaranteed fab experience from start to finish.
I'm also fond of Lupa - they do a set menu for parties of 6 or more, and serve it family-style. (haven't tried but have seen the lucky group).
Book early though. Still dreaming about their salumi plate - the head cheese is to die for.
Blue Hill's also on my birthday list.
Good luck, and Happy Birthday.
