Looks Like an East Coast Super Bowl: What Foods Shall We Wager?

With the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals vying for the SHOW, who wants to put their food where their mouth is??? I'm willing to cough up a Pittsburgh specialty dish to a Ravens fan if they win next week. No kidding...made from scratch specialty. You other two birds (Eagles and Cardinals - LOL!) can do the same thing. If we're lucky enough to make it to the Superbowl, our wager must increase a notch. Who's game?

Looks like a battle of Pennsylvania.

I won't count out the Ravens yet. They're tough birds :-))

So funny. I don't really care about football (go cowboys) but I keep up with it because of my boys and Izzy. My son Dash was saying tonight; it's going to be a birds NFC. That was enough to intrigue me.
I like it Josdean. How do we make the exchange? I'm so in/down.

I'm so furious. I wish the Giants could learn to play football correctly TWO YEARS IN A ROW.

What else could I offer up, other than a cheesesteak? GO EAGLES!!!!!!!

I say GO EAGLES!!!!!!!! Amen @Izzy!

I really don't have anything that's East Coast (Philly) specific. I buy those types of things: cheesesteak, rolls, pretzels.

I really just wanted to put in a good word for my boys!

GO STILLERS!

i'd definitly send yinz guys some kielbasa and saurkraut, homemade perogies, couple of capicola primantis "samwidges", and wash it dahn with some iron city's! keep it nice and light :)

Make it a six pack this year!!!

Stop it hungrygrl7. I'd take sausage over fake steak any day ~ you might get me to switch my allegiance from Da Iggles. ;-( (clothespin your ears izatryt)

haha as you should!!!

I've never been able to care about pro sports of any kind, but being from the Pgh area and having gone to school in the city, I have to default root for the Steelers. So if the Steelers go big (instead of going home), I agree with hungrygtrl7 - you gotta make some Polish food. I want to add cabbage & noodles to her recommendations, along with the fact that you can get pretty close to recreating the Primanti's sandwich if, like me, you're no where near close enough geographically to snag the real deal. Speaking of that, did they open the Florida restaurant ever? I remember hearing about it ages ago, but never anything since.

1 loaf fresh Italian or French bread, sliced thick
tomatoes
fresh made french fries (I bake mine)
provolone cheese
ground sirloin/meat of your choice (or egg!)
amish-style coleslaw (very easy to make)

I believe the order of stacking is: bread, meat, cheese, fries, slaw, tomato, bread.

I made these a while ago and while it's not the same thing, it comes about as close as you can get, because you simply can't get a Primanti's sandwich anywhere else.

The Pats blew another year....so it's another Superbowl I'm totally not invested in. Have fun with your wager!

Oh, also, you don't toast the bread or anything. And if you have to put ketchup on everything, like me, IT MUST BE HEINZ ... n'nat.

I have a lot of friends in Erie, PA and have visted there many times. I have yet to figure out/get used to the fries on the salad and sandwich thing but highly recommend homemade pepperoni balls. Go Steelers!!!

My team is also out so I'm not really invested in the SB this year but, shouldn't you PA folks be wagering scrapple?

@geekyguy ~ I'd give away a Philly cheesesteak in a heartbeat, but don't you even glance in the direction of my scrapple if you'd like to keep that eye. 'nuff said? ;-D

Go Eagles. Haven't seen Tastycakes mentioned yet.

@Perkster ~ I better not see you changing your allegiance over here!

@carolsfMISSESTEXAS - Depending upon the food, we can make it, chill it and ship it on ice...OR...we can send the ingredients with instructions on how to assemble.

@hungrygrl7 - Wow! You pretty much covered the Pittsburgh specialties. One last thing: Eat'n Park Steeler Smiley Cookies. They're even offering free shipping this week to Baltimore fans. For those not in the know, Eat'n Park is the biggest and best family restaurant chain in Central and W. PA, Ohio and WV. If we lose the Superbowl, I have some influence, and as a penance, I could probably send Smileys decorated for the winning team. It will kill us, but we'd honor our bet.

@ IZ and Perky - Sit down, relax and watch the pendulum swing back and forth, back and forth. You're getting tired and more tired. Now repeat after me.."I love the Steelers", "I love the Steelers". When I snap my fingers, you will awaken refreshed and a Steelers fan.

I really don't care, but I promised my support to izzy...so GO EAGLES! Now, somebody needs to explain to me what I'm committing to from a culinary point of view:-)

Go Ravens!!!!!! What's our name? I'm not a gambling woman, but I'll take shameless advantage of you bringing it up to wave my Purple and Black!

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES............ you can't forget a six of Yuenglings.

@Josdean ~ Nice try, but you are going to have to actually bring your A game to try and infiltrate this noggin.

@brooke - good.question. I'm thinking this week, the competition should be Steelers vs Ravens and Eagles vs Cardinals. Soooo..each match-up should have their own culinary competition. I will commit to sending Raven cookies to an SE participant from Baltimore. Anyone serious about swapping with me, let me know. More than one couple can play this game! State your actual donation and another SE person can respond and commit back. For an additional twist, the sender must include the recipe (if possible). We'll expand the game for the actual Superbowl!

@josdean~ HOW COULD I FORGET THE COOKIES!!! i didnt know they were doing that though...def. have to be black and gold i hope... thats great though. maybe they could send a breakfast smile for the next day :)

Well, my team is out of it, but those in PA may be interested to know that the NY Times wrote in "Rendell Is Ready to Bet Against Himself on Super Bowl" that if there is a Pitt-Philly final:

"He said that he would continue the tradition of opposing Super Bowl governors placing a bet on the outcome, and that he would bet against himself. If the Eagles were to win an all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl, a shipment of sandwiches from Primanti Bros. would be donated from Pittsburgh to a senior citizen center and a homeless shelter in Philadelphia. If the Steelers were to win, Philadelphia would send Pat’s cheese steaks to a senior center and a shelter in Pittsburgh."
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/13/sports/football/13rendell.html

Anyway, officially according to the Times, those are the 'foods of those PA' teams. I would assume Baltimore is seafood and Arizona is, I don't know, iced tea ;)

go pat's.. sorry iz. go eagles.

dearrie......... Don't make me come up there!

if it would end up an all PA super bowl i'm afraid we're going to have West PA and East PA added to the United states cause its two different worlds in this state once you cross the middle.... it would be awesome though...

Josdean, I LOVE you!! Totally forgot about the Eat'n Park cookies and I ordered the whole black and gold kit to be delivered to my husband (who has not my name, but the Steelers tattooed on his arm) at work!

I will win the best wife prize and he will share the cookies with me - it's a win-win!

And seriously everyone, of course the Steelers are going to win - no question about it!!

P.S. even down here in Florida, the Steelers rock - we even have a special Steelers bar to watch the game! And Joyyy, the only thing allowed on the table is Heinz!

Steelers fan since 1974. Could be a PA superbowl. Tampa is never going to be the same those Pirates Phillies games always erupt into fighting.

Oh, you had me at kielbasa.

We had our honeymoon in Prague, and there are many streetside kiosks that do kielbasa...they hang bunches of sausages above huge flat griddles covered in sauerkraut and butter. When you order a sausage, they cut it in half and chuck in on the kraut, then serve it on a delightful soft-yet-chewy roll. The mustard came from a sort of bag that hung from the ceiling with a nipple on the bottom. I had to be pried away with a crowbar.

i just had to wipe the drool off my desk....

@ floridayaya - I forgot about the black and gold gift set! I have transplanted Steeler fans friends in Atlanta. I think I'll send one to them! I'll need to upgrade to the black and gold gift set now for my wager :-)

@HeartofGlass: Thanks for sharing that NYT article Rendell, Rendell, Rendell. He's got a heart of solid gold! But I think if the Steelers win, he should dress up and parade around Harrisburg in tights, dressed as a pierogi. If the Eagles win, he should dress up and parade about as a Hostess twinkie. Got any better ideas?

What the s#!+? Tastycake, I mean. Rendell should dress like a tastycake. A butterscotch crimpet or something.

Hostess is based in Indiapolis, in case you care.

Nice gaffe, Sucksquehanna . . . .

The Super Bowl will get higher ratings if the Cards and Steelers play.

If the Ravens and Eagles go, we all might as well watch a DVD, or do some yard work. For those stuck in the snow, shovel the sidewalk.

If the Steelers and Eagles play, I may watch, but really, will anyone care outside of the northeast? Not really.

The one thing that can't happen, is the Ravens getting in. I hate the Steelers, being a Raiders fan, but the Ravens are the most boring team in all of football to watch. The "big game" will be ruined if they make it. Don't get me wrong, I love thier fans, as they have always been nice to me when going to games in Baltimore. Love their city as well. Still, their footbal team is sleep inducing. I love a great defense, but teamed up with a "just don't screw it up" offense, and you have nap time.

If the Ravens make it, I know a lot of people who are going to just sigh, and say "please make sure the keg is in a warm spot, so we can all hang out".

I'll throw my hat in and challenge a Steelers fan - I'll send you some homemade Berger cookies if the Ravens lose, but since they won't, what will you send me? (Keep in mind that I'm a vegetarian so meaty things are simply out of the question.)

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!
The only thing I have to donate from Pittsburgh to Baltimore is one extra large can of whoop-arse in exchange for a superbowl ring!

How about a chipped ham bbq from Isaly's? (I have dreams about these by the way, no chipped ham going on down here in Florida).....http://www.isalys.com/

mmm chipped ham bar-b-q ... with ketchup and brown sugar....

Here's the recipe - everyone should try one at least once in their life!

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Pittsburgh-Chipped-Ham-Barbecues/Detail.aspx

Looks like you guys jumped the gun. Wonder if crow is as tasty as the roasted Eagle the Cardinals are serving. Guess you'll have to include some southwest flavors now.

HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOO... YEAH STEELERS!!! load up on the keilbasa and saurkraut!!!

GOOOOOO....STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TAMPA, HERE WE COME!!!!! BTW, What were Raven folks sending us Steeler folks????

Well, dang! No Battle of Pennsylvania this year and I was all ready to wager a few pounds of our homemade scrapple on this one too!
lacrenshaw

Chipped ham bbq is one of the few things we always had that I loved as a kid but haven't cooked (or eaten) since I left home five or six years ago. My mom's recipe was dreadfully easy - ketchup, brown sugar, and a little bit of Coca Cola. Mmm. I pretty much forget about it until someone mentions any sort of ketchup/brown sugar bbq sauce.

I wonder if 'Burgh kids will be lighting shit on fire and rioting again over this year's game like the did when the Steelers took it in '06.

No shit fires this year, at least not yet. Mostly good-natured drinking and eating 'burg foods. Hope it stays that way!
