It's 10 p.m. and You're Starving
You're way too hungry to fall asleep.
Do you:
1. Get some real food like a hamburger, grilled cheese, scrambled eggs & toast. leftovers from dinner, down a big bowl of cereal?
2. Look for something sweet like cake, pie, brownies, cookies, ice cream
3. Find some salty filling snack food, like chips with dip, eat a bag of pretzels or popcorn
4. Raid the vegetable and fruit bins and spread some cream cheese or peanut butter on apples or celery, or be really good and just eat some fruit or veggies raw.
5. Resign yourself to being up all night anyway and have a cup of coffee with bacon, eggs and toast?
Or some combination of the above.
Or do you go to bed hungry and eventually fall asleep?

it usually comes at 1... i'll totter downstairs barefoot and pretend i'm gonna be nice with a couple of leftover brussel sprouts and asparagus but then the next thing you know i'm head first into a jar of hellman's mayonnaise trying to wedge a piece of french bread down far enough to get a good goop and then tabasco is flying and 15 minutes later i have my tail between my legs for what i've just done.
youraudacity at 12:02AM on 01/16/09
I'm most likely to have popcorn or a piece of toast. If I'm ravenous, then it's a bowl of cereal.
PerkyMac at 12:03AM on 01/16/09
My favorite bed time snack is salty pretzels.
lamora at 12:06AM on 01/16/09
Hahaha...first of all, I don't remember when I last time fell asleep before midnight. Scratch that, before 3-4 am.
If I am really hungry at (or after) 10 pm, I may eat one of the following:
a) cheese & fruit (yes, I realise that it's my answer to many questions. I could probably live on this stuff:-))
b) Crackers or pretzel with sour cream mixed with a bit of garlic, fresh minced herbs and salt
c) a slice of bread with something (varying from just butter and salt to cheese to marmalade to whatever spreadable I feel like at the moment)
d) a bowl of pistachio ice cream (although not if I'm starving)
e) depending on what's in season/on hand, a bowl of: cherry tomatoes OR
strawberries, blueberries or cherries OR cooked chickpeas OR some kind of a salad, etc.
Basically, it won't be anything that requires cooking. Washing, slicing, spreading and/or limited mixing is as much as I would do.
brooke29 at 12:13AM on 01/16/09
I'm with you on the 3-4 a.m. and sometimes not at all brooke. My doc gave me some ambien, but not that many. I'll use them on nights when I haven't slept for days. I know it's stress combined with physical pain for me. What's your excuse? Some days I do really well, in spite of not sleeping, and other days I drag all day long. I used to try to nap, but that makes sleep nearly impossible at night.
I know one thing for sure - if I'm really hungry, I don't have a prayer of falling asleep, so I may as well get up and find something to eat. Sweets don't tempt me, but if I had a bowl of cherries - yowser - jackpot! ;)
PerkyMac at 12:40AM on 01/16/09
@youraudacity ~ great visuals! LOL
PerkyMac at 12:43AM on 01/16/09
I never go to bed before midnight either. But I do get hungry sometimes around that time. It's going to be either #1 or #3. Sweets never do the trick, and although I've tried veggies with dip or dressing, same thing. I've gotta have protein, and savory protein at that. So it's almost always leftover meat from dinner, which is probably why I like cooking whole roasts and chickens. Nothing like slices of cold pork or beef roast, or a chicken leg at midnight! If that's not available, I always have cold cuts or hot dogs on hand. If that's not available, I always have canned Spam or vienna sausage in the cupboard. Which brings us full-circle to another post!
Hmm....it's almost midnight....!
hungryinhouston at 12:58AM on 01/16/09
it depends what i have in the house. at that time of night, i like breakfast foods, desserts, and fruits.
blizcheetah at 1:00AM on 01/16/09
@Perky - I have thoughts:-) And often I'm too tired to sleep - I know, it doesn't make much sense, does it? Sometimes I give up and take something - like you say, when I haven't slept in days. And like you, if I'm hungry, there is simply no chance for me to ever fall asleep, so off to the kitchen I go!
brooke29 at 1:07AM on 01/16/09
It is 10:12pm and I am craving corn chowder so I had the BF pickup at a Chinese joint some of that soup, potstickers, chowmein and almond chicken so I can get rid of this craving I have.
pjracz10 at 1:15AM on 01/16/09
@brooke29 ~ since we have the same truly weird schedule and acadian rhythms, maybe I should take you up on your offer. Do you play Scrabble or card games, or have some great chick flicks?
PerkyMac at 1:15AM on 01/16/09
When I worked late night shifts, it was Denny's. Now if I'm in danger of losing an ounce, the fat cells force the rest of me into the car. We drive to the taco barn around the corner and ensure the survival of the unfittest.
beth1 at 1:15AM on 01/16/09
@Perky - I can do all of the above! OH has a very extensive DVD collection, so there's alway something to watch...worst case scenario, we can always settle for "Cheers" - it can be really good at 3 am:-)
Do you play backgammon or Yatzee?;-)
brooke29 at 1:22AM on 01/16/09
Yahtzee ~ not since my daughters were little. Backgammon ~ never, but I'd love to learn. Used to be a quick study, but the brain cells are leaving in ever increasing numbers. These late nights must be burning them off?
PerkyMac at 1:30AM on 01/16/09
@pjracz10 - this was just evil of you...[Homer Simpson's voice] must... have... potstickers [Homer Simpson's voice]
brooke29 at 1:34AM on 01/16/09
Backgammon is fun, and I'd be honoured to teach you...and you must be right about late nights and brain cells, because apparently, I can't spell after midnight...:-)
brooke29 at 1:37AM on 01/16/09
@Brooke ~ I'll bet you know cribbage. I used to play it with my grandmother and then my mother. It's been years, but I still have a cribbage board. We'll need snacks. Popcorn and fruit? And drinks - a little alcohol might help make us sleepy. Yeah, that's the ticket.
PerkyMac at 1:38AM on 01/16/09
Oooh, cribbage...I haven't played that in a long time! There we go!
Popcorn, fruit, perhaps some brie? And nice chilled wine...yep, that sounds so right!
brooke29 at 1:44AM on 01/16/09
You have brie and wine? I have some grapes and crackers. I'm on my way!
PerkyMac at 1:53AM on 01/16/09
If there's no leftovers... Throw a pot on the stove and have some pasta with olive oil and cheese (all three are always in the kitchen!).
mcanna at 2:00AM on 01/16/09
The wine is in the cooler...and I'll take the brie out of the fridge, this way it will be at room temperature by the time you arrive (and don't forget those grapes and crackers)!
brooke29 at 2:03AM on 01/16/09
@Brooke29 mmmmmmm (chomp chomp) they were wicked good lol.
pjracz10 at 4:48AM on 01/16/09
Well, the best way for me to fall asleep is to tell myself I have to get some work done 'since I'm up' that's really boring, like fact-checking, doing my bills, or so forth. Either I feel much more tired or I get something done :p
It's been a long time since I got the 'hungries' late at night--even in college, where it was normal to hit a diner and order a whole breakfast or pizza at midnight, I just didn't feel starving.
On the rare occasion that I have a late-night snack attack (I'm a lark rather than a night owl) usually a tablespoon of some sort of 'fat' like a nut butter or something carbohydrate-like a heavy like oatmeal is what I go for. I love sweets but agree that the glucose spike makes me more rather than less awake.
HeartofGlass at 5:32AM on 01/16/09
I might have an egg and a slice of toast if I'm really hungry, but otherwise it's cheese and crackers for those late night hunger pangs. I often will turn to a book when I can't sleep, but that generally just encourages me to stay up later than I should. So people, if you really want to sleep take a benadryl and tune in to C-Span; watching Congress try to get something done is definitely snore material in my book. These guys are seriously long winded.
dhorst at 7:05AM on 01/16/09
where do toe nails fall in the kingdom of snackfood?!
Pavlov at 7:37AM on 01/16/09
@pavlov--sounds like fiber to me. Do you like yours with or without dip?
dhorst at 7:48AM on 01/16/09
Hand to mouth. Whatever is quick. Could be a nuked leftover or a handful of granola - or if I'm having sugar withdrawal, a handful of chocolate chips or a spoon full of Nutella.
therealchiffonade at 7:50AM on 01/16/09
I don't like to eat late. That aside if Mr Tomato and I are up late I usually make a sandwich and we each get half. Egg whites, turkey sausage, some bread I have in the freezer.
JerzeeTomato at 8:36AM on 01/16/09
Typically a handful of cereal or a few animal crackers dipped into some Nutella.
poke87 at 8:46AM on 01/16/09
I try not to eat a lot at night, but if I'm so hungry that I know I won't be able to sleep, I go for simple things like oatmeal or cold cereal with yogurt and nuts. Always with a mug of tea with nut milk and honey.
KarynMC at 9:00AM on 01/16/09
i get home from dance classes at 10:30 pm usually, and because i've been dancing since 6 pm on those days, i'm too tired and too hungry to make something real. Depending if the Mister is or isn't hungry, it's either order a pizza, stop on the way home for a bite or if there is any energy left... a sandwich. Yesterday for example, it was popcorn...
If i'm really luck there will be leftovers for lunch. But as I usually cook lunch for one, there usually aren't any.
sweetieBird at 9:57AM on 01/16/09
well, if I'm not doing this, then I will usually make myself some cheesy toast with a glass of wine. I find that I need some sort of protein/cheese in order to really satisfy late night cravings. It seems to be a pattern that usually on nights I have a meat-free dinner, like pasta night, I find myself hungry later in the evening.
juliebugsmama at 10:01AM on 01/16/09
@beth1 ~ Said: "Now if I'm in danger of losing an ounce, the fat cells force the rest of me into the car. We drive to the taco barn around the corner and ensure the survival of the unfittest. "
Those fat cells are pesky little buggars. If I had a taco barn, mine would force me to drive there, too. Ensure the survival of the unfittest - so funny!
PerkyMac at 10:16AM on 01/16/09
Depends.
Most of the times, I'll go to bed with my stomach growling. I'll be unhappy though.
If I have rice cooked up, it's a different story. I'll fry up some Spam and baby spinach with rice, or throw together a quick bowl of miso soup (tofu, daikon, spinach) to eat with rice and tsukemono.
Cassaendra at 10:56AM on 01/16/09
Usually something like cheese and crackers, or apples and cheese, or bread and cheese (please note the recurring theme), but sometime, if I'm really hungry, I just break down and do whatever the thing is that I'm craving. Just last night, at 10pm as a matter of fact, I made spam musubi, with wasabi instead of furikake. It was a deeply satisfying meal.
chisai at 11:47AM on 01/16/09
Part of trying to be healthier is not habitually having chips and french onion dip around ... because I have way more of a salt tooth than a sweet tooth and it's the first thing I grab when I'm hungry (and it can easily turn into dinner or even breakfast if it's the easiest thing to grab).
So when I'm "good" and dont' have my beloved junk food around (which is more often than not), the quickest thing wins. Sometimes I'll nibble on leftovers if it won't nix the next day's lunch. But more often than not, I'll cut a thick slice of good french bread, heat it up in the toaster oven, and throw some olive oil and balsamic in a saucer. mmm
joyyy at 12:52PM on 01/16/09
Most of the time I will probably just suck it up and wake up in a few hours and have breakfast as I usually only sleep for like 5 or so hours. But if the pangs are too great I will open up my jar of pickles and down a couple.
FrostyGhost at 1:05PM on 01/16/09
@juliebugsmamma - If you haven't noticed, most vegetarians tend to eat a lot, either larger portions at meals or (this is what I've seen the most) grazing more frequently through the day. Carbs – even healthy ones – digest quicker than protein, so if you don't eat protein at dinner your body will get hungry more quickly. This is easily managed, though, by eating protein with your carbs. Pine nuts and cannelini beans, for example, taste terrific in pasta! I've also made pretty good sauces using ingredients like tahini or cashew butter.
Just thought I'd put on my "science hat" and explain why you get munchies after pasta night!
KarynMC at 1:42PM on 01/16/09
Fresh popped popcorn with butter and Kosher salt.
Simple and good
soozm32 at 1:42PM on 01/16/09
Number 1, definitely. And a snifter of cognac.
noneother at 1:55PM on 01/16/09
Cereal or my latest obsession, crunchy Sunbutter on wheat toast.
Melinda at 2:31PM on 01/16/09
Depends on whether I'm hungry because I haven't eaten. If I haven't had dinner, it's scrambled eggs, pretty much always.
If it's just late night munchies, all bets are off and it's just a matter of what's in the kitchen. I really like toast, so if we have decent bread, that's likely with whatever is around to put on it (from PB to jelly to goat cheese). Cereal if we have something that's not stale. Bananas sliced in milk with sugar if we have a banana.
cyberroo at 2:40PM on 01/16/09
Just last night I was out a little later than usual. I told myself when I get home I'm going to have some yogurt. Needless to say I ended up eating chili cheese fritos, pepperoncini's and some salami. So much for good intentions.
chardonnay at 2:41PM on 01/16/09
Cottage cheese with a few crackers or pretzels is my before bed snack.
dmcavanagh at 3:41PM on 01/16/09
laughing cow cheese on ritz or celery works or a small bag of peanuts.
dearrie at 5:40PM on 01/16/09
For the two years of my life that I had a semi-normal dinner hour--the two years that I lived in a dorm in college--my go-to nighttime snacks tended to be relatively dense and filling: nuts, cheese, dried fruit. But really, it's funny now to think of 10 pm as a snack time; I very rarely eat dinner at all before 10, so for me this question is simply "what's for dinner?" Growing up, my family ate fairly late--sitting down at the table before 8 was unusual--and I seem to keep pushing dinner later and later myself. Frankly, if I eat before midnight I figure I'm doing pretty well. Maybe I should just start calling it breakfast?
annatr at 6:30PM on 01/16/09
I usually grab a box of cereal or a bag of trail mix or anything that doesn't have to be prepared in the kitchen and retreat to my room so that my roommates don't think I'm a fat-ass.
CafePhine at 7:25PM on 01/16/09
Go to bed hungry and forget about it. You'll sleep through the hunger and then you can have a nice, big breakfast to compensate.
showerkapp at 8:03PM on 01/16/09
Leftovers, cereal, or icecream. If I'm feeling especially lazy I just lay in bed hungry until I fall asleep.
hemag07 at 9:01PM on 01/16/09
i eat catfood, its very lite
HonkMyTawts at 3:37PM on 01/17/09
Hmm... if it's 10 pm, I can still bake, especially if I don't work the following day. If I don't have any baked goods around the house, the quickest thing with the least amount of clean-up would be apple crumble. I made it a couple days this week while watching The Daily Show.
If I don't feel like baking, I'll turn to making oatmeal from rolled oats, with cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg, and a dollop of maple syrup atop the finished mound before eating.
If I don't feel like preparing much at all, I'll just make a cup of tea and snack on some dried cherries or cranberries.
Right now, at 11 pm, I have a hankering for some Danish blue cheese and green apples in my fridge, perhaps with the combo-team of bread and fig spread. Generally, I have a sweet tooth, and have been known to start making chocolate chip cookies or banana cupcakes at hours traditionally reserved for slumber. But late-night snacking actually was a true meal in its own right back in Europe's Middle Ages (see Food in Medieval Times (reresoper).
tastyfever at 11:22PM on 01/17/09
Oh, I remember reading about reresopers – in Reay Tannehill's Food in History, I think.
On topic? Carbs at 10 pm, and then my blood sugar's 30 points too high next morning. If I'm feeling virtuous, celery and cheese or a slice of meat from dinner.
I actually tend to eat lightly during the day, but I more than make it up at night for some reason.
gentlyferal at 2:01AM on 01/18/09
My father was Norwegian - pure bread! When i would stumble home at 3/4/5/6 am (we lived in New Orleans) he was always at the kitchen counter eating a "snack". Did I mention my ENTIRE family suffers from horrible insomina? (If I get 2 or 3 hours of sleep a day I count myself good! Been this way since I was 13 and no - all the little special drugs DON'T help). Anyhoo - Pumperknickel or Rye bread, mayo, cold sliced baked potatoes, salt, pepper, horseradish, sliced creole tomatoes and more salt & pepper. I admit this is still one of my favorite early am, can't-sleep-gotta-snack-snacks. My husband was raised on the bayou in really, really, south Louisiana - can't wrap his head around this. My dad was raised in New York city - gimme a break - and there's a dozen or twelve dozen other things he'd be eating when i stumbled in at bizarre hours of the am - I crave them all on a regular 3 am basis! Too bad I just can't survive it anymore - wish I had his stomach lining and now I want some serious snacky food!!!!! Gotta love the dad that teaches you to snack seriously!!!
klmontz at 8:30PM on 01/19/09
Good bread is my go-to food. I'll generally have a piece of toast with olive oil/spices or butter. Maybe I'll add ham and cheese if I have it.
I just got hungry and sauteed asparagus with parmesan. It really hit the spot (accompanied by some salt/pepper kettle chips).
heelsonbricks at 9:17PM on 01/19/09
I'll either nibble on Nori Sheets or eat a can of tomato paste or I will simply try very hard to ignore it and go to sleep with an empty stomach because I tend to sleep better with a less full stomach.
Giasbash6260 at 10:51PM on 01/19/09
I almost always have rice warming in my rice cooker so I'll take a scoop of that and add soy sauce, salt, pepper and butter. Or if I want sweet, I'll add white sugar and milk and eat the rice like cereal.
