hot wintertime comfort drinks

It's late afternoon/evening/whenever, you just drove home in heavy traffic through sleet and freezing rain, your feet are cold, you're cranky, and think you might be coming down with a cold and just want to sit under a blanket and sip something warm and steamy. Tea is ok, but sometimes you also want juice, too...

Any favorite tea+juice+herbal combos out there you can recommend?

Pity "hot buttered rum" doesn't fit. ;)

I like Celestial Seasoning's Mandarin Zinger in a mixture of cranberry and orange juice. It's very tasty.

On days like that my grandmother used to simmer several slices of fresh ginger root and orange zest then add a lot of honey. It was sweet, spicy and fragrant...sipping it would warm my toes and almost warm me to the point of sweating. Now, I make it with lemon zest and add lemon juice with the honey. The honey is key, you have to add quite a bit to balance the bite of ginger and to lend the drink some body. It's great for a sore throat or any upper respiratory complaint.

Also, my granny would make a persimmon drink, but for that one, I'll have to look up the recipe.

Hot lemonade is of my favorites and sometimes lightly spiced hot cider. I'd add your favorite tea blend to a cup of one of those.

Why not hot buttered rum? Oh soo yummy, and, you'll sleep like a baby.

Trader Joe's spiced apple cider is YUMM!

#2 can pineapple juice or 6oz frozen pineapple juice concentrate; diluted
12oz can frozen orange juice concentrate
6oz can frozen lemonade concentrate
1 ½ pints water
96oz cranberry juice cocktail
1 cup cinnamon red-hots (or to taste)

Combine all ingredients. Heat until red-hots are melted. Refrigerate or freeze. Reheat as needed.

for those really tough days i add grand marnier.

Wild Turkey that I didn't refrigerate. That counts, right?

Does hot chocolate count?

juice while you wait for the water to boil and then slightly cool for tea?

me, personally, for the situation, i vote for hot chocolate.

as for your tea+juice+herbal tea question, my answers are iced. it lowers the strength of the fruit juice taste with cold. i cant imagine any juice tea combos in winter other than lemon, ginger, whiskey, honey... and thats when your throat hurts.

I agree with blizcheetah. I add freshly squeezed lemon and orange juice to iced tea and little of either is great in hot tea, too - along with a little honey. No reason you couldn't use an herbal tea. And a shot of whiskey sounds good to me, especially if you are having trouble sleeping.

For a hot drink when you're not getting sick - I like a little chocolate in a cup of coffee. Or a shot of your favorite liqueur in the coffee should warm the cockles of your heart and your icicle toes, too.

Chai tea latte, or a hot lemon, honey, boozy, drink.

rosehips and hibiscus flowers sweetened with a little honey, lots of vit c for that approaching cold and just sour enough to clear your throat, and quench that annoying thirst I always get when I'm really cold.

Due to a Christmas gift of Godiva chocolate cocoas we have been rediscovering the decadence of this drink...also there is a Mexican restaurant in Mamaroneck, N.Y. called Gusano Loco that does a soothing Mexican hot chocolate (using the real Mexican stuff)...delish!
And, oh yes...I should not forget MarieBelle Hot Chocolate. We're also working down a lovely container of their blend. Their shop in SOHO is delightful!!

I LOVE to warm up with a starbucks decaf and 2 oz. of Frangelico :D

I've always done the hot ginger, lemon slices, lemon juice and honey mixture, especially when anyone in the family is suffering from congestion. It clears the sinuses and warms you body and soul.

I'm also a huge fan of a good ol' cup of hot apple cider, heavy on the cinnamon and cloves. Sometimes I add a few orange slices to the pot as it's warming up.

OR -- hot cocoa made with whole milk, with a few dashes of Kaluah. But that's not fruity. Just yummy.

You guys are the best - thank you. I should've added that alcohol is quite alright as an ingredient (until I'm officially taking regular meds, that is). I also see that the Republic of Tea Co. is offering a pink grapefruit tea which sounds pretty appealing.

Thanks for the lemon/orange zest idea, too - sounds really nice.

Doe's anybody know what a mixed drink called a stinger has in it. I heard its very good for warming the body up.
