Hangover food

Happy New Years eaters! I luckily do not have a hangover today, unlike many people I know. However, when I do have a hangover, and I mean the worst hangover, the only food that sounds appetizing to me or that I can stomach is gold fish. If not for that snack that smiles back, I would most likely die. So what about you eaters? What is the one food that when you can't even think about wanting to eat but need to eat something is your go to hangover cure food?

double cheese, no onion, extra pickles with a large fry from MickeyD's.

breakfast sandwiches. the greasier the better. bacon egg cheese. perfect.

I guess I'm not really prone to hangovers in general. I do tend to opt for some kind of a bacon & eggs or grilled cheese on toast breakfast if it does happen. Salty, carb-y and lots of water would be my cure of choice, I reckon. Although back in my uni days, when I really did experience a bad hangover or two, all I could (and wanted) to eat was just a plain roll, lots of water and several bottles of Schweppes Bitter Lemon. I haven't been able to find the latter in the US, unfortunately - it's good even without a hangover.

A banana and water. Part of the reason one feels bad after a night of drinking is the loss of fluids and potassium, so this really does help. I know that a lot of people swear by the greasy food thing, but just thinking about such things when I'm hungover makes me feel even sicker.

One beer, lime a bit of v8 and a nap.

I wonder if it's how much you drink that has to do with what 'cures' you--normally I'm not much of a drinker, and when I do drink, I usually have a glass of water with every glass of wine, which is the best 'pre-cure.' In the morning, working out usually sweats out the bad stuff.

However, the ONE time when I really got 'wrecked' in my life, 8 years ago--as in passing out on the floor, waking up feeling as if I'd just had a really hard workout (or been thrown off the train)--that one time I remember getting the last egg and cheese (hold the meat) on an English muffin at McDonald's that I ever ate and really craving that. (I think I was still drunk.).

Tomato basil soup from Whole Foods and a baguette. Perhaps some Odwalla if I'm especially run-down.

Extra Large Red Bull and an Egg McMuffin, no meat makes me happy on those bad days...

Diet pepsi and scrambled eggs with dry whole wheat toast.

I don't drink to the hangover stage anymore, but when I did, a big glass of ice cold root beer was my cure.

I have to go with chicken tikka masala. It's the right balance of protein to carbs to richness/fat plus a little spice. And it makes me want to take a nap afterwards, which never is a bad thing to help get over the hangover.

Yoo-Hoo---REALLY!!!!
it's that 11 minerals and vitamins thing

The only thing I can think of that's ever done me a lick of good is a big greasy breakfast in the morning. I don't drink much anymore but when I did go out a lot, I'd take Tylenol before bed. I now hear this was not a good idea. Maybe it was mind over matter but it seemed to lessen the headache problems I suffered "the morning after."

No food, please....'ugh'

Three or fours pots of hot sweet milky tea.

i get the sick-to-my-stomach hangover, so only light brewed tea and saltines until the pukey feeling goes away.

Bloody Marys with a beer chaser (hair of the dog). Water.

Love the Menudo call....

toast and a large diet coke.

Oxymoron? Hangover/Food

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, crackers and Coke. Start with little bitty sips of the broth, then onto the noodles and once you can handle the chicken and veggies, you know you are going to be O.K.!

most of the time i'm only interested in club soda, but for new years there's nothing like kielbasa, pork, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes to make me feel 100%.

My dad insists Chinese fried noodles and congee are the way to go, that and aspirin. Oh and Ovaltine. sometimes we're so Asian.

I forgot to add, my boss told me the secret to not getting a hangover is to stay drunk, but you know you might die of alcohol poisoning.

@pjracz10: Oh yea so agree. But the bloody needs to be extra spicy. Kill off all the bad mojo in the belly.

I'm with Chelley - when I'm hungover, bring on the grease! So healthy I know ;) Happy new year everyone!

Chew on That

A neurologist friend of mine said to avoid hangovers altogether, do not drink anything with sugar in it. Drink liquor on the rocks or with a sugar-free mixer. Take 2 aspirin (no Tylenol - bad for the liver) before bed, then set the alarm and take 2 more in the middle of the night. On those rare occasions when I guzzle too much wine, a big juicy apple and a glass of ice water does the trick in the morning. It seems to balance my electrolytes.

I'm only ever put right by a huge bottle of Vitamin Water and a good workout at the gym to sweat the toxins out...

I'm with Chelley and Hilary - I need grease, salt, more grease deepfried and put in a paper bag. I usually chug a couple gatorades to rehydrate

Now that I'm almost an old fart, the only thing that works for me is water - gallons and gallons of water. Drinking it, and a hot shower are the two things that put me to rights after an over-the-top night!

I generally don't get hung-over because I rarely drink to that point...however, when I drink even one glass of red wine, I'm sure to get a headache afterwards, and the only thing that helps me is a big glass of water and a few Advil, and getting back into bed for a 1/2 hour until the Advil kicks in.

Grilled cheese, water, and two Advil before bed. Two Advil, water, and blue box mac 'n cheese the next day. The Advil and mac 'n cheese are also my dehydration cure (it happened a lot in HS/college), so that makes sense. The only problem is that although I'm the one in need of the pre-sleep cure, I'm also the one who always makes the group grilled cheese. Even on my 21st birthday - and I should NOT have been allowed near a stove that night!

Anything with a clear base broth...Pho, Saimen and Ramen is the best!! Or try them when you're trying to sober up before you go to bed.

If I can manage to eat, vegetable sushi. Plain rice would also work. The last time I would get hangovers, I used to make scones.

Also necessary are loads of Vitamin Water, the purple or black labels.
