Haagen-Dazs downsizing?

There's talk that venerable Haagen-Dazs ice cream is downsizing its packaging...but of course the prices will not follow suit, they will remain the same or go higher. Apparently they are also altering the ingredients with the addition of more corn syrup...What's going on?

They'd be cutting their own throat. People pay a premium price because they're getting something better than most of what's out there. Add HFCS and lose your customer loyalty. As far as downsizing, nearly every product on the shelf has been and will continue to do so. It's really disheartening.

I have no probs with smaller pkgs as I like to save space but I hate when they change the amount in the pkg and don't tell you. Everybody is trying to save money and so it doesn't surprise but a premium brand can't expect to keep consumers if cheaper cost products are the same ingredients as the premium brand. I agree with perky that it is disheartening.

Well this just sucks. I live a block away from Haagen's and I do like to get a shake every so often from them. But my fav is Ben and Jerry's anyways.

@gutreactions - I've been tooling around the web looking for something about this and can find nothing. Where did you see this? Can you give us a link? I'm dying to find out what's going on with the people who make the best rum raisin ice cream on the planet.

Just stop buying it because it is NOT HEALTHY!

Ice Cream isn't healthy?! What else am I supposed to eat while smoking a cigar and drinking scotch?! Cause health is always number one on my list!

chisai, if you contact the company by e-mail they will send you the latest corporate line about this situation...

@Pavlov- make your own ice cream and flvor it to go with your cigar and scotch. Better yet make an ice cream made with scotch and tabacco and invite me over to taste test it.

@pjracz: the Haagen-Dasz shops aren't being affected; it's the supermarket packages that are being downsized.

I always look at price-per-unit; it's the only way to be sure you're not being cheated by the manufacturer.

The last container of Haagen-Dasz I bought at a local market, this past weekend north of N.Y.C., was 14 fl. ounces and cost a whopping $4.99. How about in your area...

Hey all,

If you look at Haagen-Daz's website the announcement is on their front page, says "New Carton Sizes" and if you click on it, they explain why they do so.

I really think it's perfectly fine that they downsize their cartons. They're not calling it a pint, we can't say they're deceiving us. Like Perky said, other companies are doing it too, it's an understandable decision in a time like this. And honestly, I'd rather they reduce their carton sizes than take shortcuts on their ingredients and compromise the quality of their amazing ice cream. In fact my first reaction upon reading B&J's statement from Serious Eats is slight disgust that B&J is badmouthing another company, like they're trying to use this opportunity to sing their own praises.
