Grapefruit: Way or No Way?
I grew up eating white and pink, but ruby red is my favorite. It's a great source of vitamin C, with numerous health benefits. I've tried it hot, but prefer it cold, with a little sugar. Supremed sections in salads are so refreshing. I feel like I'm doing something good for my body when drinking grapefruit juice. I love the almost sweet tartness. I'd like to try using it for that orange pie that was posted recently.
What about you? If you are a "Way", in what ways do you prepare and eat or drink it? Do you mix it with any alcohol? Do you load it with sugar, or heat it in the microwave? How about stuffing it with dulce de leche?
Or, do you think it's a sour, mean, nasty fruit?

way!! delicious!!

Way. Developed a taste for it in my 20's. I peel it like an orange and separate the "supremes" from the membrane. It's messy and takes a long time, but it's delicious and fun.
Kerosena at 11:07PM on 01/08/09
Love it but can't eat it. In interacts with Lipitor.
dmcavanagh at 11:22PM on 01/08/09
Love it. I liked to cut between the sections, sprinkle with sugar, and dig out with a grapefruit spoon. No more. I too belong to the Lipitor club. It is not the only med that interacts with grapefruit. Many do. Check your rx before you partake.
vickiee at 11:29PM on 01/08/09
Way! Love it, both as juice and as fruit. It used to be one of my favorite snacks as a kid. I like the juice unsweetened and plain, but like to sprinkle a little sugar on the fruit.
jenilowrance at 11:36PM on 01/08/09
Way, way, way!!!
When I was little, my Mum would clean it for me and sprinkle with a bit of sugar. Now I have to do it myself - like Kerosena said, it's messy and takes a long time, but so worth it!
I love it on its own, in salads (avocado with grapefruit is an amazing combination, but it's also delicious in a quinoa salad with roasted asparagus) and juiced - I don't drink orange juice, but have grapefruit juice daily (unless I forget:-)). Way and way again!!!
brooke29 at 11:41PM on 01/08/09
AAAhhhh, yes. As a small child, my mother would carefully cut between each section and then sprinkle it with lots of sugar so we could participate in her diet. I still have very fond memories of laughing around the table with my mom, brother and sister eating grapefruit.
With juice? Oh yes, vodka. Or, vodka, cranberry.
carolrsfMISSESTEXAS at 11:44PM on 01/08/09
way, but if you're on certain meds, be careful https://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update0206d.shtml
nightmoon at 11:56PM on 01/08/09
Way! We used to live in a house with a Ruby Red tree hanging over the back fence. All we had to do if we wanted grapefruit for breakfast was run out into the backyard. *sigh* I miss that.
I like mine with a little salt sprinkled on top, or with a little brown sugar and then popped under the broiler for a couple minutes.
buffy at 12:21AM on 01/09/09
Way, because I love it and really miss it...but sadly No Way because my system can't digest it. Found that out back in the early 80's when I went on that grapefruit diet. Did the diet for 24 hours and spent the next 3 days,,,,well you can imagine.
lamora at 12:21AM on 01/09/09
OMG, way. I'm pregnant and grapefruit is my only big craving. I eat one every morning, first thing. No sugar, just a perfect, dripping ruby red grapefruit. And it's not ladylike at all. I DEVOUR the dang things. My kids just skirt around me, saying, "Uh, is it good, Mom?" and laughing a little nervously.
Grapefruit. I want one right now.
Kiwords at 12:22AM on 01/09/09
eh. If someone serves it to me in a fruit salad, I won't avoid it, but I don't buy it either. Now and then I try, but it always seems bitter to me. Not sour; not tart. I love sour and tart. I'm the kind of person who will suck on a lemon or line. But grapefruit tastes bitter and maybe a little astringent to me.
dbcurrie at 12:23AM on 01/09/09
I don't really like grapefruit unless doused with sugar. I do like ruby red grapefruit juice.
pjracz10 at 3:09AM on 01/09/09
way! I do find Ruby Reds a bit too sweet for me so I tend to go with the good old fashioned white? yellow? whichever it is. And just straight - no sugar.
As for the juice - one of my favorite summer drinks is iced Grapefruit juice - so refreshing. And if there happens to be some vodka getting lonely....
SayWhat at 3:34AM on 01/09/09
ALL the way! And, GFJ, too. That's what my friend and I call the juice.
meg3j at 5:12AM on 01/09/09
Love ruby reds but gives me agida.
JerzeeTomato at 6:51AM on 01/09/09
No. Way. I'd rather drink battery acid. (But then again, I'm a super taster.)
Dee at 8:05AM on 01/09/09
I love grapefruit but havent been able to eat it for years because of horrible indigestion, now I cant have it because it does mean and nasty things to me because of some of the medication I'm on. Grapefruit interacts with some cholesterol meds too so be aware folks.
huneybumper at 8:19AM on 01/09/09
WAAAAY!!! It's also one of my favorite smells (The Gap used to have a perfume/body spray called So Pink that smelled just like pink grapefruits, and it would make me soooo happy).
My Nonna and Papa would make me one along-side my Cream of Wheat each morning when I was little, and I'd call it "fruit-fruit", sprinkled with white sugar, and eaten with a special grapefuit spoon which had points on the end (did anyone else ever have one of those?).
When I got married, my husband made me my first breakfast in bed and served me grapefruit which had been put under the broiler for a minute until the brown sugar on top got all melty yummy.
I also like it with honey.
juliebugsmama at 8:41AM on 01/09/09
Love it! No sugar, please. I'll just peel and eat. I love grapefruit juice during the summer--it's so refreshing. However, I have to be careful because if I have to much it upsets my tummy.
dhorst at 8:51AM on 01/09/09
Way, but the bf can't eat it, so I don't keep it around the house very often. I love it in salads though.
annabanannas at 8:59AM on 01/09/09
@juliebugsmama ~ I still have, and use, my grapefruit spoon. Mom kept the knife. LOL
The meds warnings are on wikipedia. They also mentioned oranges and apples as culprits, along with grapefruit. My doc didn't prescribe any of the interactive ones. Luckily.

Grapefruit....Way, and I even like Fresca
Markbb at 9:28AM on 01/09/09
Way!!!!!
@Markbb ~ Fresca is fabulous!!
izatryt at 9:40AM on 01/09/09
Oooh yeah, I love Fresca!! Forgot about that.
I also forgot to mention the divine pink grapefruit/avocado and papaya salad they serve at Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in Disneyworld. It's wonderful stuff.
juliebugsmama at 10:02AM on 01/09/09
Ooooh, I love Fresca too! Come to think of it, it's the only fizzy drink that I really, really like.
brooke29 at 11:21AM on 01/09/09
Way - most definitely supremed and in salad...crab salad. Mmmm.
Junie at 11:26AM on 01/09/09
No Way!!! Would take a cup of sugar to make it taste good!
Maryland Crab

Way :D
I like to peel a grapefruit and eat it like other citrus, out of hand. I have no patience for that crooked little knife and slicing all around the darned thing.
therealchiffonade at 11:38AM on 01/09/09
Juice only, preferably with vodka. Fresca's also good with vodka.
hungryinhouston at 11:39AM on 01/09/09
way! one of my favorite fruits. either peeled and separated from the membranes (slow and messy but worth it) or juiced and mixed with vodka in a greyhound. must be white gf for the greyhound, ruby red makes the drink way too sweet. and way for fresca too..refreshing.
sloppy at 11:59AM on 01/09/09
I love grapefruit. Love it. I usually just peel it like an orange and eat it. Sometimes, if I'm feeling sick, I'll dip the sections into a little honey. Love grapefruit juice also. Oh, I make a very nice grapefruit/mint sorbet in the summertime.
chisai at 12:00PM on 01/09/09
way! love the fruit, love the juice, even love the sparkling grapefruit beverage they sell at starbucks.
crispyscorpio at 12:46PM on 01/09/09
I love grapefruit! I got a new grapefruit knife in my stocking this year. One one end it has a curved, serrated blade, and on the other end it has a double serrated blade which cuts the segments away on either side of each membrane. works like a charm!
Gin and Fresca is one of my all time favourites... Also try it with Ting if you can find some.
PeanutButter at 12:56PM on 01/09/09
Way! My mom used to make it for us everyday for breakfast when in season. As an adult, I have no patience for cutting between the membranes or supreming. I bought some cheap grapefruit spoons. What a great kitchen multi-tasker! I use them to husk strawberries and tomatoes, anything with a core that needs to be removed.
Josdean at 12:58PM on 01/09/09
I'm kind of in the Eh category on this... I can eat one every once in a while, but with sugar on it....otherwise,not really my thing.
Alm25 at 1:13PM on 01/09/09
Grapefruit is a total WAY for me. I even use grapefruit flavored hand soap which I love! My boyfriend absolutely hates the smell and taste though so that might be an issue if we ever lived together.

I love Grapefruit. Ruby Red ones always seem the juiciest! I don't even need sugar on them...just eat it straight. And they are the perfect topping in a salad on a summer day...with dried cranberries and toasted pine nuts!
tambybear at 2:35PM on 01/09/09
No way. Pomelos, on the other hand (a grapefruit cousin), major way.
mookie at 5:17PM on 01/09/09
i like ruby red the best. juice over the fruit with vodka is nice. i hate it in soaps or lotions, it smells like stinky armpits.
dearrie at 6:28PM on 01/09/09
No way. Bitter and nasty, I can't stomach more than a bite before wanting to cut my tongue off with that mean-looking grapefruit spoon.
I love the grapefruit-scented dish soap, though.
nightowl at 6:39PM on 01/09/09
total way. i peel the individual segments and eat them over the sink.
fresh squeezed grapefruit juice is the nectar of the gods.
cybercita at 6:39PM on 01/09/09
WAY!!! However, DH can't stand it. I wait until he is out for the evening and then I make a nice broiled grapefruit in the oven. I use plenty of dark brown sugar and sometimes even serve it up "restaurant style" with a halfed maraschino cherry in the center of each half. I also like a nice salty dog on a hot summer evening as a change from the customary summer gin and tonic.
Mizbee at 7:52PM on 01/09/09
Way! Prefer reby red, but am ok with others. peel. half. split a segment and pull off the film. eat that segment. split next segment... and so on. im glad to see im not a freak for eating it that way. lol. always thought i was.
blizcheetah at 10:38PM on 01/09/09
Way! I love grapefruit... ruby red and pink are my preference, but the white ones are good too. I enjoy it on its own (although I've never tried it broiled in the oven; I've always just eaten it cold, "as is"), as well as in salads. Grapefruit is also delicious in juice form... and sorbet form as well.
@blitzcheetah - no, you're not a freak! I eat them the same way.
Steen at 3:11AM on 01/10/09
I have hypertension and my BP meds prohibit the consumption of grapefruit. There are chemicals in grapefruit that interact with my meds. I do miss vodka and grapefruit juice though. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
BITTER at 1:55PM on 01/10/09
No way! It is so disgusting.
cochon at 5:07PM on 01/10/09
way.
hungrychristel at 7:07PM on 01/11/09
Way, and I am so glad to have found other people who hand-supreme their grapefruits. To me, very different texture & experience from cut supremes, leaking juice all over the place. I love the little vesicles popping under the teeth, and they are such cool shapes!
hcethatsme at 9:30AM on 02/01/09
Love/hate - love the taste, hate the bitter after taste - thank God, Lipitor has solved my dilemma!
bareneed at 9:51AM on 02/01/09
Way! I like it chilled, cut in half, and sprinkled with just a tiny bit of sugar. Delicious!
Skythe at 10:12AM on 02/01/09
I admit that I'm surprised to see all the comments about doctoring grapefruit with sugar. I always added a touch of salt to sweeten it; same goes for watermelon. Is it just me?
