Food Slogans and Jingles That You Just Can't Get Out of Your Head

So I just caught myself singing (all right, it was more like hissing since my throat is sore), "You don't have to be a man to love Manwich, you don't have to be a witch either, it's true..." again! I don't even buy Manwich...nor do I know how this jingle ends, but I just can't get it out of my head! You don't have to be a man to love Manwich...

My OH astonished me the other day when he performed a full version of ShopRite "Can Can sale" jingle - he says they have the same jingle every year, and 'tis the season. So every time they play two lines of it on telly, he keeps singing the entire thing to the end. Although his favourite is clearly "I wish I were an Oscar Myer wiener..."

Do you have one? Or two?

You don't have to be a man to love Manwich...

What's killing my intellect now is the Subway 5 Dollar Foot long song !

@brooke29--now, what I want to know is if your husband can perform the choreography!

How sad is it that the now-veggie me used to jump rope on the playground: "Two all beef patty special sauce lettuce cheese on a sesame seed bun," and I didn't even eat Big Macs!

Your "Manwich" jingle made me think of a jingle I've only seen in documentaries, from the 1970s: "I can bring home the bacon, fry it in a pan, and nevernevernever let you forget that you're a man!"

I don't know the end of the "Manwich" jingle either...but remember lots of little ones, like 'O-O-R-E-O," "Snap, Crackle, Pop," "Par-kaaaaay," "They're GRRREAT!"--ironically, most for products that even as a kid I wasn't that 'into.' Don't get me wrong, I loved lots of processed foods and jingles, but the two didn't always match.

Okay, here is one for a product I did like as a kid:

"Pop-Pop-Pop-Pop. Pop-Pop-Pop-Pop
People pop up with Kellogg's Pop Tarts.
A Pop every where! A Pop every where..."

And Leggo my Eggo...

Exchange orangeade song. I think they haven't been on the shelves for over 25 years, but I still remember the cartoon/commercial. I loved it - the commercial and the drink.

The exchange goes round round round
and down down down
in your glass glass glass
makes your mind
think yum yum yum
It's that Orangeade called Exchange

The exchange goes round round round
and down down down
in your tum tum tum
makes your mind
think yum yum yum
It's that Orangeade called Exchange

We have banned the Subway 5 dollar foot long jingle due to having two boys 10 and 14, who snicker away and well...

@heart--ah, you brought back that perfume ad from when I was a little kid and thought that painted toe nails were glamorous. Yup, Enjoli would let you bring home the bacon and still let your man feel like a man. Guess this was before Mr. Mom came out.

My bologna has a first name it's O S C A R...

and

Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles on a sesame seed bun...

They get in there and won't go away.

You are all so mean! now I'm going to be hearing those dang things all day! I get a song stuck in my head and it stays there for days, SO says its because of the thickness of my skull not letting it out. I have a stress release that everytime I get frustrated, angry, whatever I start singing the theme song to the old Bannana Splits Show, I never even watched the dang thing but I know all the words to the opening. Ok I have to go hurt SO for earlier remark about my thick headed stubborness ;-)

@dhorst--I never knew it was a perfume ad! How odd, to advertise perfume with a reference to bacon!

Or maybe not....

fresh goes better!
mentos freshness!
fresh goes better with mentos
Fresh and full of liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife!

I'm not so sure how much mentos qualify as "food," but it's been in my head since I watched Clueless this weekend.

" I can't believe I ate the whole thing........Pop Pop Fizz Fizz Oh what a relief it is" and "HO HO HO .....Green Giant "

My mom always used to sing "Chock Full o' Nuts is that heavenly coffee....heeaaaavenly coffee....." every time she made her coffee in the morning. Now I find myself humming it when I'm setting up my coffee maker.

I mutter to myself snatches of that Velveeta jingle "...Colby, Swiss and Cheddar, Blended all togedder..." every time I make a cheese sauce!

"Pizza in the morning, pizza in the evening, pizza at supper time. When pizza's on a bagel, you can eat pizza anytime."

Clearly, this was before the Atkin's craze.

The Five Dollar Foot Long jingle drives me crazy. It barely qualifies as a song. It's kind of a creepy chant, but so effing catchy.

This isn't a jingle, but in the mid 80s or so, there was this commercial for Elio's pizza where this little kid is heating himself a piece and he says "And the cheese goes blup blup blup." For some reason, that's stuck with me since.

@Heart - as much as he could while lying on the sofa:-).

And I managed to misspell "Oscar Meyer"...it was 2 am, but still...Grrr!

@spiceweasel - "Forget the cheddar! Velveeeeeta's better!" was stuck in my head for way too long...it was then that I had to ask my OH what Velveeta was!

Does a pirate in a rest au rant count? That free credit report dot com commercial plays in my head constantly. The guy who sings it is cute, too.

Subway's $5 foot long is another.
Oscar Mayer weiner.
Ho Ho Ho, Green Giant.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions in a sesame seed bun.
Chock Full o' Nuts
Coke: I'd like to teach the world to sing.....

The best ever: I can bring home the bacon, fry it up in the pan....

I am giving away my age with this one, but it has stuck in my mind all these years and I still find myself singing it mindlessly - "You'll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!"

I always liked "Anticipation" for Heinz ketchup.

@Heart--a dab of Enjoli or bacon behind the ears? If I ate bacon, it sure would get my husband's attention not to mention the dog and cats. I never liked Enjoli, but it was a funny jingle to spoof.

My sister used love to sing the "Meow Mix" jingle. Drove us all nuts. And speaking of nuts, does anyone remember the Peter Pan jingle? "Picky people love Peter Pan peanutbutter. It's the peanutbutter picky people pick."

Here's the Enjoli "Bring home the bacon" commercial. Just don't blame me if you get the darn thing stuck in your head!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X4MwbVf5OA

I work with someone whose last name is Bologna. Every time I type it, I have to sing the Oscar Mayer Bologna jingle.

"Uh, oh! Spaghetti-o's"

if it say's libby's libby's libby's
on the label label label
you will like it like it like it
on your table table table
if it say's libby's libby's libby's
on the label label label.
never mind saying it three times fast, typing once is enough.

bareneed: you think YOU'RE old! How about me! Every time I have Cream-of-Wheat I remember the jingle from a show on the radio (this was before the popularization of television) called "Let's Pretend." The sponsor was Cream-of-Wheat and they had a very catchy melody. I still sing it: "Cream-of-Wheat, it's so good to eat that we have it every day....it's good for growing babies and grownups too to eat, for all your families' breakfasts, you can't beat Cream-of-Wheat." (Please don't tell anyone how old I am; the people I talk with on the phone at work, think I'm a young chick!)

Okay, I'm not sure if this was an actual jingle, or if it was just one of my mom's silly songs she used to sing all the time...but she'd always sing this when cooking with onions: "Onions, onions, fa la la, onions, onions, fa la la, adoop doop doodoo, adoop doo doooo, I love onions." Was that an actual jingle back in the 60's, trying to drum up the onion business, or was it yet another manifestation of my mom's loopiness??

"Campbell's...soup is good food."

@spiceweasel - so THAT's what Velveeta is supposed to be... =)

OMG@ huneybumper!! I love the theme to Banana Splits!! Whenever it comes on Boomerang I drop what I'm doing (unless I'm holding The Niblet, of course) and DANCE! My 14 y/o yells for me if it comes on and he knows I'm not near the tv.

The manwich song was stuck in my head a few weeks ago but I finally shook it loose. Thanks to this post it wil probably take up residence again.

Oh damn it Perk, I keep singing those stupid Free Credit Report jingles, too. Great!

@dhorst--actually, even if the perfume wasn't great, I kinda like that woman's attitude!

I guess I watched too many cartoons as a kid, because I keep thinking of cereal catch phases: "Silly rabbit, Trixx is for kids!"

"Every day I wake up, pour myself a cup..of that fresh Folger's aroma - the best part of waking up!" (but only the Rockapella version)

"i love the fishes cause they're so delicious
got goldfishes
i could eat them everyday
and my mom says thats ok
got goldfishes"

and the other one that goes "the wholesome snack that smiles back until you bite their heads off". love it.

@brooke - yep You don't have to be a man to love Manwich...

@ribster - the 5-dollar footlong gets me alllll the time, drives me nuts.

also, "what would you do for a klondike bar?!"

@korovka - yep goldfishes! and that's a good one to get stuck tho, I like it.

Does anyone remember:
"Kibbles and bits and bits and bits..." or
"VA VA VA VA VEGGIE POPS!" (pizza pops)
??

In honor of Stan Freburg
Who put eight great tomatoes in that litlle bitty can, Contadina, Contadina

"I want my BBQ,BBQ,BBQ,BBQ,BBQ,BBQ,BBQ sauce" from Chili's when it had a real identity. Can't get it out of my head. Walk around day after day humming it and people are beginning to avoid me.

@heart--it definitely has the feel of the Virginia Slims cigarette ads, but still seems to not be quite as feminist...Not sure what I think about that, but it's a silly, funny ad that makes me think of Charlie's Angels. Now, Bosley, what do you think about bringing home the bacon?

What kind of person clicks on a thread guaranteed to haunt her for the rest of the day?

Free credit report dot com is the absolute worst.

I'm an idiot.

The jingles in the commercials from the '80s are the best.

A double pleasure is waitin' for you
A double pleasure from Doublemint gum....

The old Dr. Pepper jingle -- "I'm a Pepper, she's a Pepper, he's a Pepper, (here it goes on ad infinitum) . . . wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too? Dr. Pepper! Drink Dr. Pepper!" Not that I like it, I just REALLY remember it.

Campbell's soup - mmmm, mmmm, good!

Absolut Vodka: This commercial is one of the best ever and I'd sing the song better if I could actually speak French, but it's so catchy and happy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSbb9U6GPXE

Reading the responses got me thinking about a lot what I've forgotten. Quick google search on 'old commercial jingle' netted this website:

http://www.tvparty.com/comjing.html

It's fun - there's a lot there.

I work at a subway so I feel all of you on the 5 dollar footlong situation...

The McDonald's "Bada bababa...I'm lovin' it" campaign back in the day was pretty bad. The latest Cambell's soup commercial is constantly stuck in my head as well...

Oooh, my OH just sang to me (eh, to stop my Manwich):

Sometimes you feel like a nut
Sometimes you don't
Almond Joy's got nuts
Mounds don't

Now my day is ruined!

It's a honey of an O, it's Honeynut Cherios.

New Keebler Chachos, flour tortilla chips. We're making cheezy quesadilla, we're makin' cinamon crispana.

I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony...I'd like to buy the world a coke, and keep it company.

Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce cheese...

It's not the same, old side (old side).

I want my baby back, baby back, baby back...Chili's baby back ribs. Chili's baby back ribs (barbeque sauce).

J-E-L-L-O (pudding in the middle)

I'm Chicita Banana and I'm here to say a banana is something you can eat every day.

N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestle make the very best (delicious cocoa).

Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat.

You deserve a break today, at McDonalds - we do it all for you.

Meow, meow, meow, meow....

Here's to good friends, tonight is kind of special, the beer will pour...so tonight, tonight, let it be Lowenbraugh

Hot dogs, Armour Hot Dogs...the dogs kids love to bite.

Long ago there was an engineer, choo-choo-Charlie was his name we hear, he had an engine and he sure had fun. He used Good 'N Plenty candy to make his train run...

I'm a Pepper, you're a Pepper...wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too...

Dunkin' Donuts, you can't buy 'em in a grocery store. Dunkin Donuts, you can't buy 'em in a bakery. Dunkin Donuts, they're not for sale in a restaurant....you have to get 'em at Dunkin Donuts, it's worth the trip.

Free credit report dot com (yeeehaw!). Should have seen it comin' at me like an atom bomb...or...I married my dream girl, married my dream girl, but she didn't tell me her credit was bad (I know it's not food related, but I ALWAYS have this in my head)

OMG, I could go on and on and on....I work in marketing and LOVE commercials - LOL!

-Dawn
Wicked Good Dinner

Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar!

Weeeelllll... I agree w/ (and remember) all of the above, but melodies seem to stick in my head and do their reruns, much more than sung jingles. For example, maybe a dozen years ago Lavazza coffee put on a big ad campaign. The thing I remember most clearly - other than the building-size can of Lavazza that appeared @ some of the commercials - is the melody that was la-la-la'd in the background. Very soothing, almost sensual.

The dancing banana popped into my head, singing "It's peanut butter jelly time...peanut butter jelly...peanut butter jelly...peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat..." I need to pawn it off on you guys so I can stop seeing that stupid banana dancing each time I close my eyes.

One that has been driving me crazy forever is "I feel like Chicken Tonight, like Chicken Tonight." Of course with the accompanying flapping elbows.

"It takes 2 hands to handle a Whopper the burgers are bigger at Burger King."

When my daughter was younger, she liked it when I sang this jingle.

"It's the same old thing every day everywhere.
Phones and faxes go here, go there.
When time is flying and the day's a mess,
Don't skip lunch get Lunch Express."

Of course, there's the timeless "Oscar Meyer Weiner" song.

@Kimi - I remember that one. . I used to think "For crying out loud, it's sauce in a jar, make your own."

Dog food - but food nonetheless...

"I got a dog, his name is Beau and he's got that Hi-Pro glow.
Health-y Hi-Pro glow. Energy, Hi-Pro glow.
All the protein in Hi-Pro helps to give the Hi-Pro glow."

It was sung like a military cadence.

Dude, that Walmart add with the Queen song is killing me. It's stuck in my husband's head. He goes around singing, "we will we will stomp you." He insists that's how they sang it in the late 1970's when it was released. No sports fan, he.

Someone had mentioned an onion song that her Mom used to sing.

It's a real song by a lady named by Susan Christie. Here is a YouTube video with some kids lip-syncing it.

Gimme back that filet o fish...gimme that fish.....
