Favorite feel-better food

As I sit here, I am on day 4 of a nasty sinus infection, and am trying to figure out what I should have for dinner, I thought I would ask you guys what your favorite food is when you are under the weather (both out of curiosity and in the hopes of getting some inspiration). If it is something you eat on a regular basis, is there anything different you do to it to make you feel better? Any miracle home remedies?

PS - Happy New Year!!

anything you can keep down hun. I hate to say it because some ppl hate the stuff, but canned tomato soup is my usual go to when sick, acidic enough that it actually feels good on a sore throat. Hope you feel better soon.

There's just something about eggs (sunny side up) and buttered thick slices of toast that just make everything better.

chicken noodle soup in a mug .. breathe it in as well as sip it.

a bowl of soup, grilled cheese and a few hot toddy's with your choice of booze.

There is alot to be said for chicken soup and matzo balls easy on the stomach and as NanaJoie said breathe deep, it really works.

I usually don't eat anything. When I start feeling better, I have really weird sudden cravings. Homemade mash could be one of such cravings, although it's not that weird. Funny, I had just been ill for a long time, but I don't remember much of what I ate or wanted (again, for the most part, nothing).

I get sinus infections, and I find myself seeking hot liquids - soup, tea, coffee. I really like hot and sour soup from my local Chinese take out place - I think the sinus infection affects my taste buds, too, so I look for something really exciting.

Heated hot sauce, Western Family, the t**s.

How about menudo with a couple of squeezes of fresh lime juice in it? Clears out sinuses, for sure.

Or pho -- just for the broth alone.

Oatmeal. Hot and easy on the stomach.

I have to go along with dearrie's sugestion too .. alcohol kills germs .. a good stiff drink won't hurt .

Hot and sour soup or chicken noodle soup are my (and apparently everyone else's) go-to cures. And booze. Lots and lots of booze will cure anything that ails you :)

Pho has always been my go to when I'm feeling well, and especially when I am battling a cold or allergies. I can make it as spicy as possible to clear my sinuses with the peppers. The squeezed lime over the soup has this cooling effect in the summer and when I'm sick, the citrus helps me taste the food. :)

Get well soon.

Some chicken soup, lots of H20, hot lemondade and anything with hot sauce are my go to's when I have a sinus infection. Also, a saline nasal wash really helps a lot. Certainly not the most pleasant thing, but it really works.

my best "knock it out of the system meal" --

garlic, garlic, garlic - parsley, olive oil and pasta:

chop lots of garlic, fresh parsley, put into a bowl - a pinch of kosher salt, a drizzle of olive oil ... boil the pasta, take a ladle full or two (depending upon how much juice you want) pour on top of the garlic, etc. drain pasta, (i like shells) put some shells in a big bowl, ladle lots of garlic parsley juice and definitely add some hot chili pepper. romano cheese if you want....
(for a lb. of pasta i'd use 1-2 heads of garlic, a bunch of italian parsley, about good healthy drizzle of olive oil and about 4 cups of the pasta water)

i guarantee you will clear up any cold, infection, malaise you may have....

A few weeks ago I had a bad cold develop into a double ear infection. I attempted to knock it out of my system with a big bowl of Kimchi Gijae - kimchi pork noodle soup. It didn't completely work, but it made me feel better than anything else I ate that week. The kimchi is probiotic and there's anecdotal evidence that it may have helped keep the bird flu at bay in Korea.

@pooch, I love garlic, but boy that much would have my husband sleeping in the guest bedroom for a week. Hmm...maybe that would at least help me sleep--the man can really snore.

@Marzipanda: I love kimchi jjigae! That is another favorite dish on cold nights. I had that a couple nights ago at my favorite Korean restaurant. The 12 platters of banchan + simmering pot of fluffy egg thing were awesome too!

Chicken noodle soup! I follow my grandma's version and use macaroni in place of the usual egg noodles. I use broth, chicken breast, carrots, celery, onion and bay leaf. The bay leaf is a must.

I have been battling pneumonia since July or August and I want chicken soup almost exclusively. If I'm really hungry, I have saltines with it (sometimes buttered). I've used soup noodles and egg noodles, as well as any veggies I have around to make it more nutritious. I have been drinking a lot of lemonade, too. I poach some chicken, then shred it into the broth. Have already had my pork & sauerkraut today. Might go poach me some chix and make more soup.

While fighting sinus infections, I breathe in a lot of steam (shower, tub, teapot, hot drink, soup), use Flonase nasal spray, and try to eat some horseradish which really helps clear out the sinuses. Hope you feel better soon!

Hubby's sick and having his ultimate comfort dinner of Kraft Chicken Noodle Dinner. Something I had never seen before I moved to the midwest. Mine is Kraft Deluxe mac & cheese. How sad are we? He figures it's just because it's the only thing salty enough that he can taste it over the nastiness.

Hot and Sour Soup.... I second that emotion!

@MaresyDotes ~ I'll bite. What is Kraft Chicken Noodle Dinner?

Another vote for chicken noodle soup.

I have had a cold for two weeks now and last night we went out for Chinese and all I could muster up an appetite for was Egg Drop Soup. What a great choice! I have felt lots better since eating it, I even got a second order to go to bring home for today. So now that's my go-to cure for a cold.

@ Perky - OH GOOD! I'm not the only one! It looks just like the standard Kraft dinner "blue box" but it's red and it has little tiny pasta squares in a chicken "sauce" with teensy bits of dehydrated carrot/peppers/celery. It's not bad, but it is SUPER salty and if you prepare it according to box directions (which I never really do with boil/add packet stuff anyway) like hubby does, it's kind of thick/goopy for my taste. He had a long-lasting cold this past summer and had it like three nights in a row. :P Too much salt! I think there's also some Kraft "spaghetti" dinner in a similar box. Again - never knew they existed! :)

warm rice pudding

Get thee to a Korean restaurant specializing in Spicy Tofu soup (Soon doo boo jigae) or specializing in yookaejang (a spicy, shredded beef and veggie soup--this is what my mom would make for me if I had a sinus infection/upper respiratory ailment). Something about hot, spicy soups really do help open up those congested sinuses!

@MaresyDotes ~ thanks for the info. Sounds revolting! ha ha
Love your name. You know the.....and little lambs eat ivy part? Our neighbor lent us some sheep to eat our poison ivy in the hedge row. The song is true!

If you can manage food in the morning, oatmeal is your friend. It's warming, filling and very neutral.

As far as later in the day (when appetite permits) try to get some soup. Whatever kind you like will work. Have it in a nice big stoneware mug so you can warm your hands around it. Something very comforting about that. The mug will also keep the soup warm for a while if you can't scarf it all down at once. Feel better!

When I have a cold/bronchial or respiratory infection...hot and sour soup is what I crave. Plus lots and LOTS of hot tea. Back when I was without appetite after numerous surgeries and infections...I craved spaghetti...so much that my DH actually made a pot of sauce (from scratch, with my directions from the bedroom) and pasta and I ate a little bit for lunch and dinner daily for over a week. That's all I could eat.

Hot Ginger Lemonade - (Steep 2 tbs of ginger in 16 oz boiling water for 5-10 minutes (I go for 8), strain, add 1 tbs lemon juice, 1 tbs honey, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Drink from thin porcelain tea cup until all gone. Best drank while sitting in a nice hot bath. This comes from my mom who got it from her mom. She says the porcelain tea cup works better than a mug. While I know that's ridiculous, I only use the dainty tea cup also, because it really does sort of seem to work better. Don't mock me.

The other thing is a Big Mac and Fries (unless it's a tummy thing).

chicken soup if you can breathe through your nose. sushi with wasabi if you cant breathe through your nose. oranges to make me feel like i am doing something healthy. i crave spaghetti when i am getting over nausea... and jello, cause there is just so much water you can drink.

After not eating any foods for a month and a half right now I will not go a day without hot and sour soup with extra tofu, my body is craving it right now.

Well I felt terrible today and it definitely wasn't because of a sinus infection. But lots of water certainly helped, I also resort to hot sauce when Im sick. Ramen with Siracha or even habanero sauce helps me feel human again. I thinks its the crazy heat that releases endorphins and gives me a high/rush kind of feeling that almost makes me forget about the jackhammer attacking my brain.

For Breakfast: cream of wheat made with milk, egg, butter, and sugar
For Lunch/Dinner: tomato soup with grilled cheese OR chicken and rice porriage made with onion, garlic, and ginger

Oh, yeah, hot tea with lemon, honey, and ginger.

@dhorst = yes i know it's a lot of garlic, and if you're going to eat it, hubby must also.... otherwise -- well, let me just say -- he'll surely be keeping his distance.

garlic is a natural antibiotic..... some people have a hard time digesting it, but if you can tolerate it believe me it will knock out everything, and i mean EVERYTHING.....

Hot Punch, folks. My family and I live on this stuff all winter long. Keep it warm (never boil) on the stove: 4 c water, 3/4 c sugar, 12 whole cloves, cinnamon stick (optional); simmer and stir to dissolve sugar, then add 8c tea (made from 6 tea bags, I do two batches in my 4c measure), 2 1/2 c orange juice, 2 1/2 c pineapple juice, juice of one lemon. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before drinking, and wave goodbye to your cold.

My Mother used to mix a can of Mushroom Soup with rice for me when I was sick. I haven't had it in years, but the love in it seems to have made me better many times.

Hot and sour soup might be a good idea...the warm soup feeling will help your throat and overall headache while the spiciness will clear your sinuses. You might even consider adding some hot sauce to ramen noodle/chicken soup for an easier fix. Feel better! I've totally been there.

Chew on That

When I'm not feeling well, my taste buds go all out of whack, so it's best if I don't cook anything that requires the use of spices. And a lot of perfectly good foods taste terrible to me, when I'm sick. Things will taste soapy or metallic or just plain awful, so it's one bite and I'm done.

Best if I stick to the mac and cheese in the blue box, tomato and rice soup, and things like that.

If it's a head cold and my stomach isn't protesting, sometimes I'll want things like cheese quesadillas with plenty of hot sauce, because at least I can taste the hot.

The funny thing is that always, without fail, the very first thing I want when I start feeling better is a steak. Sometimes I'll subconsciously know that I'll be better in a few days, even if I don't feel better at the time, because I'll take steak out of the freezer to thaw, and plan on having that for dinner a few days later.

I just recovered from a bout of pnemonia and hot apple cinnamon Thera-Flu really helped. Food-wise, I lived on consomme and Stouffers Mac & cheese with Shiracha.

When I had mono - the sickest I've been in my life - I craved Taco Bell. And my mean mom wouldn't drive to the nearest one to get me a Chili Cheese burrito, even when I BEGGED her. Probably because it would have killed me in my weakened condition...

Now my tastes have matured, and I crave Totino Party Pizzas when I'm sick :)
