Did You Watch the Premiere of Hell's Kitchen?
The season premier was last night. I thought it was lame. The pre-planned power outage (didn't they do that last year?), the "diners" laughing as they "walk out," presumably to pick up their daily scale pay, the ubiquitous fat guy contestant. It's all so been done. But I probably will continue to watch it like a train wreck. Do you like this show?

Missed it. Watched him though - made an owner of a filthy restaurant practically cry as Gordo and the guy's mama berated him. He wanted to make his deceased papa proud? He did fire the chef & sous chef which needed doing. Chef Ramsey does know how to fix a restaurant, but I can't stand how he yells and humiliates people - especially those who don't deserve his ire. Train wreck it is. And yes, I'd probably watch if I came across it and nothing I really like was on. Hanging head in shame. I'll watch a food program, even a nasty one, over a stupid sitcom anyday.

I watched most of it. I think I missed the beginning a bit. I felt like Chef Ramsey was over the top with the yelling and the pissy-ness this time. Or maybe it's because I've gotten used to nicer people by now. The first episodes in the season are usually like this though (?) You get to see who can take the pressure and who can't. Also, there's probably a good bit of selective editing too. We barely heard about some of the contestants.
If I stumble upon it again while flipping channels, I'd watch it. But I'm not scheduling it in.

Heard he got a very low turnover rate at his restros. and people really want to work for him...I don't believe he's like that in real life like he is on T.V.
Markbb at 3:32PM on 01/30/09
I saw one of these shows, and I cannot, for the life of me, understand why anyone would want to watch this jerk scream and carry on. It's ugliness of the first order, without any entertainment value (unless you enjoy watching people be humiliated and degraded), and was simply boring.
Womandingo at 4:40PM on 01/30/09
Wait, are you talking about Kitchen Nightmares or Hell's Kitchen? Perky has me confused.
simon at 4:53PM on 01/30/09
I love Gordon Ramsay when I watch the British shows on BBC America. On "The F Word," he goes through a series of dinner services with teams comprised of 5 "regular people" who just like to cook. When they're slow, or they screw something up, he gets irritated - but he's basically just cranky. He only yells if they're complete asshats to him. That show made me adore him. The American shows amp up the anger too much. I wish he'd stand up to the producers/etc. and just be himself.

I was excited because this turned up in my DVR. Once I started playing it, it was some stupid police reality show. Boo.
RegrettableFoodie at 7:00PM on 01/30/09
@simon ~ Missed it means I missed the first episode of Hell's Kitchen, but I did happen to watch Kitchen Nightmares last night - happened across it. Sorry for any confusion.
PerkyMac at 7:00PM on 01/30/09
@hungrychristel; My whole family is addicted to reality food programs. Sunday afternoons are devoted to Duff, Bobby, and whatever Food Network challenge is on. The kids RUN to the tv while I make dinner.
I find it a nice way to spend time with my kids as opposed to some inappropriate music video.
Gordon is a rock star in this house.

I took this (not great quality) video of Anthony Bourdain talking about Gordon Ramsey and Hell's Kitchen during a talk Bourdain gave last year. I think he captures Gordon quite well ...
And I'll watch Gordon do anything.
maered at 8:14PM on 01/30/09
Ok, I'm also a moron: here's the link to the video ...

maered at 8:14PM on 01/30/09
just watched the video on youtube. Is Bourdain doing stand up? Who is his audience? Seems as though it started out as a roast of some sort and turned into this feel good love fest. Which, hey, we love Gordon over here,
but, who is the real Anthony Bourdain? Hmm. I've just so confused myself!
donnie at 8:28PM on 01/30/09
Thanks for that maered! He seems to know Gordon well and was quite sincere.
PerkyMac at 8:32PM on 01/30/09
There was an article in GOURMET MAG last year and it was titled something like, The Real Gordon Ramsey. This was such a short
yet real piece on a man who is larger than life. Part of the
article spoke of a girls night that his wife hosted and had burnt something in his oven after a few cocktails. He had a kitchen built for her and banned her from his.According to this article, his mum lives with them and I believe he has 4 kids.
donnie at 8:45PM on 01/30/09
@donnie -- He was in Santa Cruz doing a talk and book signing for "No Reservations." The audience would throw out questions and he would riff ...
maered at 8:59PM on 01/30/09
@maered--Don't leave me in suspense,he would riff? I have no clue what that means, sorry!
donnie at 9:07PM on 01/30/09
Kind of "stream of consciousness" talking ... give him a subject and set him loose.
Also, Bourdain? A very very nice man. I got to talk to him for a few minutes when they were setting up the book signing table--very gracious, very appreciative that he has fans.
maered at 10:18PM on 01/30/09
Thanks for entertaining me! Bourdain always seemed like a "real guy". My hubby and I use to wait for his food network show every week with baited breath: for the life of me can't remember what it was called. We hung on everything he said! Bourdain is one of a kind, which is why the video took me by surprise. It's nice to hear he's one of the good guys.
donnie at 10:31PM on 01/30/09
Getting back to the actual topic -- the contestants on this season's Hell's Kitchen look like a bunch on inbreds.
mince at 3:42AM on 01/31/09
I LOVE Hell's Kitchen. I cant wait to see the next episode. I love the show. I my family and I record every episode.

Of course I did, and I feel a little dirty. I adore BBC Ramsey more than words can say. I totally crush on him. I swear, sometimes he makes me smile like a 12 year old looking at Bobby Sherman (a reference only other oldsters will get, I'm sure.)
So I watch his US shows because I need another GRrrr fix. The contestants. They suck. I have no fear that this year will be unlike the others, all "chefs" I wouldn't trust to make my toast in the morning.
Hey @perky, you can watch Kitchen Nightmares on hulu.com. I have the show subscribed so it automatically adds it to my queue. I also do it with Kitchen Nightmares, and a long list of other shows they carry. Seriously, Hulu rocks.
chisai at 9:06AM on 01/31/09
I forgot to add - Lacey? Lacey! Her whole "pretty face" in the kitchen had me roaring with laughter. The editing moneys at HK really do know their stuff.
chisai at 9:13AM on 01/31/09
@chisai ~ thanks for the tip! They have lots of my favorite shows. I didn't skim through all 35 pages, but I'm crossing my fingers that Mad Men is there, too. (not food related, or Gordo related, I know).
@dd ~ I hope you're wearing earplugs while watching Gordon. His language hurts my ears even though, yes, I've heard those words before. I don't like the idea that he makes it ok to use them, as probably most do today. I still wince when I hear that language. I know, at 10, you've heard those words, but that doesn't make it right to use them. There are lots of better ways to deal with people than anger and screaming, as well. Just my inner Mommy talking. I grew up in a home where tempers never flared and cursing was rare. I know that's unusual, but it was beautiful.
PerkyMac at 9:16AM on 01/31/09
@perk - No Madmen. They were only able to run the 1st ep of this past season. AMC used to run their original shows there, but soon realized that they could make more money making the eps available on iTunes or Amazon instead. If you just go to this page it'll give you a listing of what shows have full episodes available.
chisai at 9:31AM on 01/31/09
@chisai ~ great & thanks. I did find one site that had MM eps and they cut you off at 72 minutes and demanded payment to continue to watch.
Now that I know when Hell's Kitchen is on, I'll watch and see if they hook me in. Thanks!
PerkyMac at 9:39AM on 01/31/09
This show is my guilty pleasure, if only because it makes me feel a bit smarter than all of the contestants. I am a fan of Gordon Ramsay, but really, I prefer his appearances in the F Word. (Where F stands for food, not what you might otherwise think.)
Skythe at 10:26AM on 01/31/09
@chisai - yes! The edit on Lacey and her pretty face was priceless...and I want both of them off my telly screen as soon as possible. Ugh! (as she said, most people think I'm just another pretty face in the kitchen, OH and I yelled in unison - Noooooooooo, we don't think so! Of course now we call her The Pretty Face)
Which brings me to - yeah, I watched it. My excuse? I stayed on the sofa in the living room after AI, and OH always watches it. Lame excuse, I know. Hell's Kitchen always strikes me as a freak show, but at least this year there seem to be a couple of decent contestants. At least the signature dishes weren't as much a disaster as they usually are. Still a freak show, of course. I'm glad I can get my "normal" Ramsey fix on BBC.

I watched it. It was great! Can hardly wait to see next week's episode.
On the women's team, I'm going to guess the winner will be the one who cooked the best dish from the round table. Gordon complimented her cooking and that he would have guessed she'd been cooking for 15 years versus only a few. I'm rooting for her.
Don't have any favourites from the men's team. I don't care for Seth. There is not one leader from their group. How hard is it to be a leader?!
paris221966 at 9:38PM on 01/31/09
Its so different from Top Chef but I appreciate that it is unique and not just a carbon copy ie Nanny 911 vs SuperNanny.
eastcoastvb at 10:00PM on 01/31/09
I watched it. I hadn't really thought about why I enjoy Hell's Kitchen, but I guess it is (at least partly) because I can feel superior to the contestants. I'd have to agree with that Bourdain video, I wouldn't trust a single one of them to run a Cinna-Bon, either. Last year's winner was really an awful cook and horrible with people, to boot. I cannot imagine why Ramsay didn't boot her early on.
Calichef at 11:53PM on 01/31/09
I love all shows that Gordan Ramsey is on, The F Word, Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen. It's weird that he seems to overplay his nastiness in Hell's Kitchen when he is 'a little' more toned down in his other shows. Also, he is so sweet and fatherly with his kids and wife.
As to the contestants this season, they seem to me to be chosen for their weird quirks. Something that would tick of GR. The overweight guy, the whiney woman, etc. I was surprised out of all those supposedly excellent contestants, they can never mesh.
But..I'm hooked.
lamora at 12:59AM on 02/01/09
I think the BBC shows are SO much better than the US ones. I wish they would choose Chefs of the same caliber as contestants like the ones on "Top Chef".
Nemis at 11:14AM on 02/01/09
This is the one program that will make me flip away immediately. I am temperamental myself but Chef Ramsey is just a power mad jerk, doesn't matter how well he cooks or runs a restaurant. This is abuse and talent killing.
