Challenge: Grey Foods?

Hello everyone! I hope you had a great week and you're ready for the weekend. I heard that Cheese Wiz product was grey in colour before they add the orange colour; so this started a discussion in the office.

I was attempting to brainstorm some naturally grey-coloured foods and I can only come up with the inside of wild rice(?).

Can you think of some grey-coloured foods?

Thanks for your help!

Poi is slightly purplish gray, isn't it?
The inside of a well-done burger or steak.
mushrooms (some)

If you skinned some beans, you'd probably end up with some gray stuff.

scrapple before cooking

eggplant pulp

then there are those very old formerly green beans: grayharicot vert

Oh Perky I'm so out of the loop--or else you're just being silly!
What's "scrapple"?

The Berkshire farms sausages they sell at Kushi Q in midtown Manhattan. They're tasty as heck, but they're grey all right.

Oh, some oysters are kinda grey (the shells always, but I mean the actual oyster).

@hungrychristel ~ grayharicot vert was an attempt at humor. Scrapple is serious indeed. I absolutely love it, but only have it a few times a year. Here is a good description of this PA Dutch pork treat - usually cut in slices and fried up for breakfast with eggs. It's slightly spicy, crispy on the exterior and pork/corny mushy on the inside.

Bratwurst sausages are grey before cooking. Why are these coming to me one at a time?

Roasted aubergine salad/spread - roasted aubergines, a touch of olive oil, salt, garlic and vinegar (you can also add fresh minced herbs, but then it won't be as grey:-)).

Oh, and -duh- mushrooms!

Some fish is sort of grey...or maybe I am not getting good fish!

Oh, raw shrimp.

Oh this is great! Excellent, I knew I could count on all-you guys. Though the colour of grey (though not a colour at all) doesn't necessarily bring "fresh" to mind it is clear that it is still a natural shade!
@julie - Mushrooms, of course! I'm brain-dead today. In particular: I think chinese black mushrooms would do the trick?
@perky - greyharicot vert is clever--your brain is in OD today dude! Also BTW I have never heard of scrapple and I will make a point to do so.
Because: Pork + Fried + Breakfast time + seasoning = happiness :)
@brooke and Karyn - A blended dip with eggplant and beans *check*

Have a good weekend SEaters!

oysters

also - the oatmeal they served for breakfast when I was in college.

The inside of raw hamburger meat is gray sometimes. So are many sausages.

And so were my mother's steaks and the outside of many of her roasts. But I don't know if everyone's was like that...

I agree, I love it, but eggplant/aubergine is gray on the inside.

And sometimes oatmeal, yes indeedy can look gray.

Oh! I had to get in on this!! I just bought Grey squash. I never saw that before....It intrigued me because of the grey color that I just had to buy it! Nothing remarkable in taste.. It tastes just like regular squash...
Also grey-I dont know the name of it but it is a Chinese dessert that is made with sticky rice and coconut cut into squares. Sounds gross but it's really very good..oh oh oh..I'm on a roll--SQUID!! That's really grey before being cooked....
I'm all out of ideas now............

If you take mushrooms and pulse them in the food processor (cooked) you get a gray looking puree which looks most unappetizing.

@Jerzeetomato...I think that's more of a tired taupe hue.

I'm more of a tired taupe hue...not quite grey yet. Unless you count those silvery things weaving their way in on top of my head.
Regardless, don't you think that ground beef, not browned, but kind of steamed (cafeteria), well done stuff takes on the greyish hue?

Poorly cooked hashbrowns!

Baba ghanoush is grey... oh, and white bean dip as well.

All of my other ideas have already been mentioned in previous comments: mushrooms, oysters, raw shrimp, some types of sausage, some hot cereals...

And of course the aforementioned "questionable" cafeteria-style ground beef. But that's not really food.

Well, since there is the thread of blue vs. bleu, how's about gray vs. grey. For me Crayola had the coveted "grey" crayon. It was used for drawing kitties and for the mortar in between bricks in fire place/brick houses drawings.
Okay, not a food, but how's about using that mortar as an excuse for the grey word, in an outdoor brick oven...hey, my husband will try anything in game. He's almost as embarassing as I am, in a game of Scrabble.

@dhorst - how about that: gray is a color, grey is a colour. To me, it's grey.

Now imagine how much fun it is when my American OH and I play Scrabble...:-)

Oily fishes like mackeral, sardines, king fish etc can have dark grey-ish flesh

Taro root after its been cooked for some time

Poached pork (not as bad as it sounds, but when its not sauced, face it, its grey)

chicken liver pate sure looks brownish-grey to me.

Fresh (not smoked) kielbasa is pretty grey.

Buckwheat flour and (I think) rye flour. Love 'em both!
