NYC: Great Brunch or Lunch Near Union Square?
Hi there. Am looking for a brunch or lunch spot in the union square-ish vicinity. Nothing terribly pricey please. Thanks so much!

Mesa Grill has great brunch options, and it's only a block or so away from Union Square. We've been a few times and have always enjoyed it. They make a great Bloody Mary!

I had a great brunch at Craft Bar recently. This place is usally a bit pricey for dinner, but the brunch was totally reasonable. Excellently preapred food, austere setting, and a great opportunity to sample some of the magic that the Craft restaurants turn out, at a much lower price point than their usual fare.

Blue Water Grill has decent food (although it's a BR Guest restaurant and I hate to give Steve Hanson the pleasure...) another great restaurant is Chat N Chew on 16th Street... good southern down home cooking.

Another vote for Coffee Shop

City Bakery is always (dangerously) fun for brunch.
Pipa, in the back of ABC, has a surprisingly yummy and affordable brunch. And Olives, in the W, is also good - a little pricier.
Upstairs at Thé Adore (on 13th St) might be a nice departure.
If you don't mind crowds, you could try Friend of a Farmer (Irving) or Grey Dog (University).

Depending on what you meant by "not pricey". You can do a prix-fixe lunch at Tocqueville or head down to Momofuku Ssam which also serves prix-fixe lunch these days (brunch menu available during weekend).
For a simple sandwich lunch, you can try Tisserie or Momofuku Milk Bar and bakery. Both will run you $10-$15 at most to get full.

I second Pipa! I didn't even think of it, but they have a fun menu, and the chandeliers create such a great atmosphere.
I like Coffee Bar's menu, though I find it to be a little overpriced, and the waitresses are a little too snooty for my liking. I really enjoy the dressing on their seared tuna salad, but I'm always disappointed when I order it and I get 6 pieces of tuna, some mache, and a side of bitchy waitress.

Save and hit up Union Square Cafe at some point, it's worth it.
For cheaper eats I highly recommend Paquitos on 3rd Ave. The Maria Burrito will be your new favorite item.
The Thanksgiving on a Roll at Chat n Chew is fantastic. Good homestyle southern cooking there. The mac n cheese used to be among the best in town, but the recipe changed years ago. Still worth a bite though.
The Gramercy Cafe on 3rd and 14th is also worth a lunch stop. It's a diner, so you get what you expect. But i've had more good experiences there than not.
Joe Jr's is great for breakfast.
And then there are always the places like Chipotle and Heartland Brewery. I go to Heartland when I just want to sit with a beer and some chicken tenders.

Coffee Shop highly overrated. Chat & Chew is friendlier. Rosa Mexicano is always solid, if expensive. 71 Irving is yummy and cosy, if you can get a table.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'll check out Mesa Grill (and most of the other places - sound so tasty).
