Bloody Mary Is the Girl I Love
When it comes to that big bit of brunch beverage imbibery known as the "Bloody Mary" I prefer mine with Top Shelf Vodka, V-8, horseradish, worcestershire sauce, celery seed, cracked black pepper, a squeeze of lemon, and for garnish I like a stalk of celery and, what the hell, throw in a couple of olives if you must.
The one thing the dude cannot abide is the addition of hot sauce. BLEEEEEECH! Also these crazy bastages who refuse to put in horseradish, I mean WTF?! So what are your musts and must nots on the "perfect" Bloody Mary? And for the love of Pete, let's not get into the secret "black cardamom" Gary's olde towne tavern recipe!

I love Bloody Marys that near "salad in a glass." I like to serve them with one pickled string bean, one pickled asparagus spear and a baton of pickled carrot. I know the usual veggie to include is celery but I'm not a fan and neither is BF. Sorry Pav, but I do like a dash of Tabasco. (To quote Bugs Bunny.)
How do you feel about Clammy Marys? Using Clamato in place of tomato juice? (Don't worry, I won't have my feelings hurt - I'm bracing for a BLEEECH.)
Veggie Marys? Using V-8??
therealchiffonade at 7:49AM on 01/16/09
no shame in Clamato.... just like the saltyness and celeryness (is that a word?) of V-8
Pavlov at 7:52AM on 01/16/09
Nice South Pacific reference! ;)
crazy_betty at 9:10AM on 01/16/09
Jack Daniels is the boy I love. With Coke.
No Bloody Marys for me. Never could get into them.
juliebugsmama at 9:48AM on 01/16/09
I'm not a Bloody Mary person, but a friend of mine always had his with Absolute Peppar. Cried like a little girl the next day too. Me--a glass of white wine will do.
dhorst at 10:15AM on 01/16/09
I like mine with horseradish, black pepper, lime juice, and worcestershire. For garnish pickled okra and jumbo green olives. I can do without the celery. Vodka is my first choice but tequila is nice sometimes. Don't care for Clamato in my Bloody Mary, but I do like Clamato mixed with beer and lemon juice.
finsbigfan at 10:47AM on 01/16/09
+1 @pavlov's version, but a salted rim is a must for me, and I do like 'em spicy!
nightmoon at 10:49AM on 01/16/09
With enough horseradish, I might not miss the tabasco? As stated on another thread, too hot is not for moi. Otherwise, we make identical Bloody Marys. I was going to abbreviate, but that wouldn't work - at all! LOL. The celery is a must for me because I love to eat it and I'm recently addicted to olives, so that would be new, but welcome.
PerkyMac at 10:56AM on 01/16/09
V8 (and vodka, of course) and a dilly bean or a dill pickle, lemon-pepper, and worcestershire sauce. If I have access to "Duffy's Sauce" I eliminate the lemon-pepper and worcestershire. Gotta admit, never used horseraddish but aim to try that out this weekend - - or perhaps sooner :) It's pretty common around here (Wisconsin) to have a beer chaser too!

We must call, "Clammy Mary's" by the name of, "Bloody Caesar's" in Canada. Gee, maybe that is why I am greeted by blank stares in USA bars when I ask for a, Bloody Caesar! I LOVE Clamato juice with vodka - we rim our glasses with celery salt, add tabasco and worcestershire and a wedge of lemon and serve with a celery heart stick - it is so refreshing - and - Clamato juice is great without the vodka. We get a bottle of extra spicy and one of original and mix them together for the right kick.

p.s. another lover of music from South Pacific. better go wash that man right out of my hair.
PerkyMac at 11:04AM on 01/16/09
Bloody Marys, Yes!!!!
good vodka, clamato, tomato juice, worcestershire, horseradish, squeeze of lemon, celery salt, black pepper, olives and celery. I will tolerate other pickled vegetables, but do not even think of putting a pickled okra in the glass. I also like to drink my bloody marys with a side of beer -- I think it is a midwestern thing.
lakeloverhh at 11:04AM on 01/16/09
Don't ask what brought on the show tunes.... I guess being part Irish + Alcohol = singing.... As to the South Pacific, I just happened to play Stewpot in a college production.
Pavlov at 11:11AM on 01/16/09
@Pavlov--I was going to ask if you liked your Bloody Marys with a side of 101 Pounds of Fun in the form of Honeybuns
HeartofGlass at 11:42AM on 01/16/09
I love Bloody Marys as well. There is something about a good BM with top quality vodka that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...oh wait that is probably the vodka.
FrostyGhost at 1:03PM on 01/16/09
@FrostyGhost ~ There's something about your Bloody Mary acronym that has me perplexed........
izatryt at 1:13PM on 01/16/09
I love Bloody Marys, and am not terribly picky about what goes into them... I have had quite a few that were great, and they were all different (although I agree with the previous commenter; my preferences tend to run toward the "salad in a glass" variety). The one thing I absolutely CANNOT stand is the use of Clamato or Beefamato in a Bloody Mary... never, never, never!!! And technically, that would make it either a Bloody Caesar or a Bloody Bull (respectively) anyway, so maybe that doesn't count.
Steen at 1:37PM on 01/16/09
V8 Juice? Ugh. Clamato is fine, because I usually like to put in a dash of clam juice anyway. The real key is the more horseradish the better. Hot sauce is fine but it has to be red Tobasco. I was at one restaurant that gave me rooster sauce to put in my Bloody.... ew.
But V8... That's not a Bloody Mary. I like V8 just fine plain but...
Really it should be tomato, horseradish, vodka (absolut peppar for a real treat!), tobasco, clam juice, maybe some worcestorshire, and if you have it around a little olive brine too. If you serve it without celery, it's not made correctly.
schwartz at 1:46PM on 01/16/09
Pavlov, I'd drink your recipe! Would you try mine?
My ideal bloody mary:
4 dice
2oz absolut citron
3 healthy dashes of worchestershire
5 healthy dashes of tab
1/2 tbsp horseradish
fill with V8 (yep, I like the celeryness tooo)
fresh cracked pepper
Squeeze lemon wedge
Rimmed with greek seasoning, salt and served with lemon.
My ideal Caesar (a canadian bloody mary i guess?):
4 dice
2oz tanguray (i like a sweet gin more in this one)
3 healthy dashes of worchesetershire
a splash of Frank's
a splash of squeezed lime
fill with Clamato (heeeellz yes!)
fresh cracked pepper
Rimmed with celery salt and garnished with lime, celery and pickled jalepenos....
I suggest you try this if you want to be happy :D
hungrychristel at 2:19PM on 01/16/09
Dice?
dbcurrie at 2:48PM on 01/16/09
V-8, worchestershire, lots of horseradish, lots of lemon juice, dash of olive juice, dash of Guinness, dash of celery salt or even better Old Bay. Stoli. Not too much ice. Celery.
coolname at 3:03PM on 01/16/09
I thoroughly enjoy or should I say enjoyed Bloody Marys as well. That was ruined when I ordered one at a bar in Wicker Park (Chicago) a couple months ago and it was the sour most rancid tasting drink I've ever had. I think they were a little heavy handed on the Worcestershire or SOMETHING because it was nasty!

Chew on That at 3:08PM on 01/16/09
@christel ~ like db.......dice? tab, as in that old diet coke drink? greek seasoning, as in oregano? splash of frank's......... what???? how well would i have to "know" frank? You know I trust you, but Frank - not so much.
PerkyMac at 3:10PM on 01/16/09
i like mine with pain tomato juice instead of V8 and maybe a lemon wedge on the rim, with a dash of Worcestershire sauce, horseradish or even wasabi sometimes, some black pepper. I'm going to try garlic one of these days, too.
brooke29 at 3:14PM on 01/16/09
@Perky--my guess is dice=icecubes, tab=tabasco sauce, greek seasoning=Cavender's all purpose Greek Seasoning, Franks=Franks' Red Hot Sauce (the original Buffalo wing sauce).
All this Bloody talk has convinced me to give them another try.
dhorst at 3:22PM on 01/16/09
@Chew on That- the tomato juice was probably sour, good Bloody Mary is best made at home.
dmcavanagh at 3:26PM on 01/16/09
How about some tequila for a Bloody Matador.
dmcavanagh at 3:28PM on 01/16/09
ahhhhh so dhorst! Thanks for the interpretation. Phew. ha ha!
PerkyMac at 3:29PM on 01/16/09
Zing Zang Bloody Mary with carrot, celery, pickle and bleu cheese stuffed olive.
I'm going to try Clamato juice though, see it on the shelf and the grocery but never have bought it.
IllinoisPam at 3:36PM on 01/16/09
@hungrychristel I would definately try a your bloody mary sans the tab... Hell I would drink Aqua Velva strained through a dirty gym sock! Actually that isn't exactly true... I prefer top shelf hooch!... maybe strained through 2 gym socks... and one of them has to be clean.
Pavlov at 3:48PM on 01/16/09
@all youz coolios- sorry I got all bartended jargon and then lost the thread somehow.
@dhorst - You got some good guesses mind reader~! **you r correct!** ding ding ding ding...
@pavlov - LOL If I don't have any gym socks lying around I'll just strain my old pantyhose...eeeewww (no tabasco eh? well I'd attempt to kik it up somehow--chili powder? Or sans heat if your sensitive! haa)
hungrychristel at 5:55PM on 01/16/09
LOL @ perky - Frank? Oh he's a spicy number. You never met him? He tends to always sit next to Mr. Ranch on my plate LOL Though he's wild I think you can trust him haaha
hungrychristel at 6:00PM on 01/16/09
@hungrychristel~it's Mr. Blue sitting next to Frank at my place. Although honestly Mr. Blue is usually consumed more by wimpy husband to fend off Mr. Frank's assault. I usually just have Mr. Frank's bottle on the table and douse away.
dhorst at 6:34PM on 01/16/09
I love Bloody Marys. I use Mr & Mrs T's spicy Bloody Mary mix. I love all of the above add-ins...but this is just faster. I always add in a little more horseradish, celery salt, salt..I love SALT, and a splash of Worcestershire.
lamora at 11:23PM on 01/16/09
Yes, hail the lovely Bloody Mary, I bow down to you my lovely, kiss kiss. Oh wait the thread.....
@Pavlov I make it just about how your husband makes it but I add red wine vinegar, lime juice, cracked pepper and a must tabasco. I use a tiny and I mean tiny amount of horseradish because I just do not care for the taste of horseradish or wasabi. If I can I will make (everything but the vodka) ahead of time and let it marry in the fridge.
pjracz10 at 2:40AM on 01/17/09
A drink isn't a salad unless it's fruit (sangria) or vegetable (blended gazpacho), IMHO.
Pickled carrot in a Bloody Mary? Sorry, not here. :)
mince at 4:35AM on 01/17/09
@pjracz...... how can I put this delicately?!..... ummmm ..... I am the husband! To my knowledge, my wife doesn't drink bloody mary's
Pavlov at 8:23AM on 01/17/09
@Pavvie ~ LOL! After all of the posts you have contributed, I am shocked anyone would miss the definite presence of your testosterone!
izatryt at 10:15AM on 01/17/09
@ Pavlov oops sorry Mr Pav, lol.
pjracz10 at 10:41AM on 01/17/09
@pavlov - I loved the SP reference but the Lebowski ref was even better...
mayoxqueen at 10:46AM on 01/17/09
V8, Stoli Peppar (if you can find it), cracked pepper, chili-garlic sauce for heat(especially if you can't find really hot horseradish)...86 the celery.
bessfour at 4:10PM on 01/17/09
@mayoxqueen...... Shut the fuck up donnie!
@ Izatryt... Thanks for smelling the oozing.....
@ bessfour.... Never omit the celery.... it is akin to omitting the oxygen in day to day existence........
One Love.....
