Any Tea Drinkers?
My new obsession is tea. I am finding that I am more of an herbal flavored type tea drinker (yes, I know herbals are not really "tea") and while I am not over the moon enough to drop huge amounts of money on really good teas just yet, I'm wondering if any of you SE'ers are into teas and can give me some recs? So far, I am very into:
Celestial Seasonings Country Peach Passion
Celestial Seasonings Blueberry
Celestial Seasonings Ginger Vanilla Chai
Twinings Peppermint
Twinings English Breakfast
Trader Joe's Black with Mango
Trader Joe's Black with Blackberry
PF Chang's Passion Fruit (don't ask because I won't tell)
Teavana Blueberry Bliss loose tea
Good ol' Luzianne for iced tea
I have come to find that I pretty much hate Tazo teas. I can't pinpoint why, but I just do. I'm also not huge into green teas.
Thoughts?

www.twoleavesandabud.com - great rooibos, cool alpine berry tea, high quality. I had a sampler and it was all good except for teas that came in it that I never enjoy (jasmine, e.g.). I need to order some of their mint tea as I'm on a mint tea kick and I'm sure it's good.
Portsmouth tea company - Earl Grey le creme (a blue flower earl grey) has totally rocked my world. their citrus rooibos is great as well. Smells and tastes better than any tea I've ever had.

Not herbal, but I don't know anyone who doesn't like Celestial Seasonings Bengal 5-spice with a bit of milk and honey

i drink gallons of pg tips. i think i was a brit in another life.

I drink quite a bit of tea. I usually opt for tea bags, but I think loose-leaf brewed tea is superior. I love Celestial Honey Vanilla Chai Tea, Morning Thunder Black Tea, the holiday herb blends(sugar cookie!), and Tazo's black teas.
My favorite teas are black and chai. I actually have a lot of loose chinese teas in my house, and a few of those are quite expensive. Tea drinking is really big in China, and they have really great teas that fetch very high prices. I think I will stick with the cheap tea bags for now
jo_wang at 10:56PM on 01/12/09
I have a coffee press exclusevly for tea. but for bage I usually go with Tazo and Stash, Stash pepermint is about the only pepermint I have ever found that doesnt seem to have an awful chemical aftertaste to me. and Tazo has some wonderful blends.

I grew up on 2-3 pots of Twinings or Earl Grey a day. I've never developed a taste for flavoured teas. For me, if I could not have tea in the morning...I am not a happy camper...I can not wake up without a pot of tea in my Brown Betty.

I like chai teas by (sorry) Tazo but the concentrates only and I make an extra hot latte.. Also chai made by Morning Glory, again, concentrate and into a latte.
pjracz10 at 12:44AM on 01/13/09
I drink it cold. Not iced, but fridge temp.
The Celestial Seasonings plant isn't far from here, and I go to their gift shop now and then and stock up. The regular teas are cheaper than at the grocery, and the end-of-season and dented boxes are dirt cheap. I mean, come on, dented boxes? They're cardboard. I transfer them to a tin anyway, so it's not like I care about the boxes.
AND they have flavors that I never see in the stores. AND you can sample.
I buy other ones, but I'm always trying different ones, so I can't say that I have absolute favorites. In winter, i tend to favor the mint teas. Last summer, I was drinking a lot of Raspberry Zinger for some reason.

I drink iced tea all year long, but usually only drink hot tea when I'm sick or recovering. I always have a variety of Celestial teas on hand, but my favorite bag tea is Honest Tea (and I love the name). Just the scent is comforting. I drink it plain, unless I have a sore throat or congestion - then I add lemon and honey. I don't use them for iced tea.

I love tea. Twining's Earl Grey is great. But my favorites are from Mighty Leaf, expensive, but worth it. I also like getting Genmai Tea from the Asian markets.

Hi, I'm new here, but I've been a tea drinker all my life. I prefer red rose tea if you can find it. My late husband like to drink Celestrial teas raspberry zinger. Since he had to have decaf tea, he always added it. Said it gave the decaf some flavor.

I drink lots of tea, probably more than coffee. I grew up on PG Tips, ceylon, assam and strong Earl Grey. I don't drink flavoured teas. Not that I can't drink a cup on occasion, I just don't enjoy them. I did go through a stage when I tried all kinds of flavours, just to see if I may find something I fancy (that, and my doctor told me to cut the caffeine), but nothing really stood out.
I drink mostly chai (from Talyors of Harrogate), Earl Grey, Yorkshire tea (strong English breakfast), assam, Barry's gold blend, PG Tips... I also love green tea, especially for iced tea.
brooke29 at 2:17AM on 01/13/09
I like to mix my teas together ...I love mixing Celestial seasonings pepperment and chammomile tea together and then add honey....it's a great combo. I like to drink it when I'm feeling under the weather. I also want to try Teavana..My friends rave about the jasmine tea....I'll let you know what new finds I may discover.....

I like the variety at Republic of Tea (republicoftea.com). You can buy in bags or bulk. You should be able to find many new teas to try and the ginger peach tea jam is one of the best jams I have ever had.
finsbigfan at 8:34AM on 01/13/09
I love Celestial Seasonings Chai, Bigelow's Decaf Chai, Bigelow's Constant Comment and Republic of Tea or Bigelow's Earl Grey.

My tea cabinet is something of a household joke. Yes. I have a cabinet devoted to tea. ALL kinds of tea. I am a tea fiend. English breakfast for morning (or really all day), red zinger is my favorite, all the time herbal, I drink it by the gallon. I love mint and Celestial Seasonings Plantation Mint is black tea with mint, I like that with a little bit of milk. Earl Grey is good with a little milk as well. And there is something about jasmine tea that's just so soothing. Those are a few of my favorites.
carolrsfMISSESTEXAS at 9:44AM on 01/13/09
My daily cup is PG Tips. I had to make a New Years resolution to completely finish a box of herb tea before I open a new one, I have too many unfinished boxes. I recently read an article that the hibiscus used in herb teas (Celestial Seasons uses it a lot) may be a natural source of an ingredient that lowers blood pressure.
kathyvegas at 10:19AM on 01/13/09
I'm with Italiancupcake on mixing teas: Celestial Seasonings' Raspberry Zinger mixed with Lemon Zinger is really good, especially with a good dose of honey. The only peppermint tea I like is CS.
I am fond of Twinings' Orange Pekoe with hot milk and sugar.
And for the upper echelon of teas, nothing and I mean nothing, beats Mariage Freres tea, specifically Marco Polo, Eros or Ile des vanilles. It's expensive, but it is heavenly. If you live in NYC, you can find it at Garden of Eden.
laurelie at 10:22AM on 01/13/09
oh, and I hate Tazo tea too - I have always thought it tastes like it has pesticide in it or something - very chemical tasting.
laurelie at 10:23AM on 01/13/09
Traditional Medicinals Ginger Tea is so good: no sweeteners whatsoever! Yogi Tea Peach Detox is tasty, too: peachy without being sweet, with lots of cinnamon-y flavor. As far as black tea goes, I love Whittard of Chelsea's Russian Caravan tea, because it's very low in tannins and therefore deliciously mellow. Also, Whittard of Chelsea has admirable fair business policies in place.

I love ice cold Royal Milk Tea. They sell it in cans here-- I can't get enough of it!

Yeah, dittoes to the overstuffed tea cabinet. It's like my own personal little pharmacy.
My favorites are Bigelow's Lady Grey, Constant Comment decaf (love it), and most mint teas. I just placed my 1st order with Republic of Tea, for their little Traveler tins that have about 6 bags in each. It's a nice way to sample without wasting $$. Tried their "Get Relaxed" tea - it's got lavender in it - now that was an unusual taste.
Some ot the Stash teas can be ok in a pinch, too.
Also have to recommend agave nectar as an alternative to honey. Makes a really nice difference, plus the outside of the jar stays waaaay cleaner than my sticky honey container ever will.
moibec at 10:57AM on 01/13/09
For hot tea, I'm Earl Grey or English or Irish Breakfast. For iced, hibiscus is my favorite, unsweetened, with just a little bit of lemon. No particular brand, they're all pretty good. So refreshing!
CookiePie at 11:06AM on 01/13/09
Mmmm, tea. I drink it all day, every day. I keep 3-5 types at my desk so I can have it at the office, and I came back from London in November with almost enough tea to tip my suitcase over the airplane weight allowance! My favorites are Twining's Lady Grey, Harrod's English Breakfast, and a delightful special ceylon from Tea Palace, somewhere in the Notting Hill neighborhood.
For green teas, I love the teas from Teaism in DC (also available online) - especially Jasmine Downy Pearl and Tie Guanyin (aka Iron Goddess of Mercy, a robust oolong).
Rishi has a wonderful jasmine pearl tea, too, and a lovely white silver needle tea.
For a less expensive fix, I do love Republic of Tea in many flavors. My current fave is their cardamom cinnamon black tea mix (even if they do spell "cardamom" incorrectly - "cardamon").
littlestcapy at 11:10AM on 01/13/09
Twinings Irish Breakfast for me. I don't like herbal teas or any flavored teas either really. Just a great cup of strong black tea please. Of course being from the south I drink sweeten ice tea year round. I usually use Twinings English Breakfast for that.

Welcome-aboard the tea-train Chelley!
I'm particularly partial to Tetley brand green tea. I find it to taste really clean and refreshing, reasonably affordable, and comes in large bulk quantities. I also drink Tetley brand Camomille in the evenings, and I also enjoy Safeway "O" Organics tea line (Early Grey, Peppermint and Black Tea).
You can never run-out of different flavours to experiment with! There are numrous health benefits as well. But don't deprive yourself of the coffee bean (espcially kona)!
P.S. - Never try Lipton Green Tea. It's bitter, expensive and doesn't taste like green tea at all!
hungrychristel at 11:58AM on 01/13/09
Constant Comment tea. It makes me happy.

My family hails from Nova Scotia (I've lived in the USofA since I was 10). At 4 o'clock every afternoon, come hell or high water, my mother always stopped for tea. There was always had a pot of tea concentrate on the stove so all you had to do was add boiling water. The tea in our family usually came with milk and sugar. Sometimes, my father would just put strawberry preserves in it. Up until recent times (mother died 3 years ago) my mother always considered 4 o'clock tea time, and anyone who happened to visit during that hour would always be treated to tea and delicious home-made cakes. And none of that sissy herbal tea either... always strong black loose tea.
SavtaShayna at 1:13PM on 01/13/09
I drink more herb tea than "actual" tea these days. When I was a teenager I used to drink gallons of hot Lipton tea with honey and lemon. And then......I discovered coffee.
But I do enjoy a cup now and then, herbal more often than not. We have very hard water in our area, and even when using softened water, which I prefer not to do (we do have a tap with unsoftened water), there's a nasty film on the tea, especially regular tea, which makes the whole thing unappetizing.
I don't seem to have as much of a problem with herbals, especially if I use that softened water. My current favorite is Traditional Medicinals Peppermint tea. It is an absolute blast of peppermint flavor--wonderful stuff.
I do like some of the Tazo teas--Refresh is good, not as good as TM's peppermint, and their African Red Bush is nice.
There's a wonderful company called Rishi tea that sells many wonderful teas too....they have a Peppermint Rooibos (I guess I like mint) that sounds wonderful but that I've never tried.
I've found that green tea gives me a mild upset stomach! I wish I knew why that is, because I know it's such a healthy drink.
Barbd at 1:53PM on 01/13/09
I adore the Yogi brand teas: favorite flavors so far are Calming, Kava Stress Relief, and St. John's Wort.
jbeach at 3:29PM on 01/13/09
I love to drink a mixture of chamomile/linden tea flavored with honey at night... it soothes me and quiets my mind before going to bed.
One of my favorite herbal teas is Lemongrass Tea... it's a great digestive tea and also quiets you when you're stressed. I also like to make a Spearmint Infussion - steeping whole spearmint sprigs in hot boiling water and sweeten with brown sugar or honey.

I drink mostly tisanes, though I do like the Celestial Seasonings Chai. For bagged teas, I like Yogi teas's Ginger and Sweet Thai Coconut and Trader Joe's peppermint. When it comes to loose leaf, I really like adagio tea's foxtrot and quite a few of the herbal blends from teaism.
KarynMC at 3:31PM on 01/13/09
Got to have real tea, not herbal - not enough body. Have several favorites. Bigelow Constant Comment and Lemon Lift. Stach Peach mango, Lipton Chi and TJ's black mango. Those are my favorite ones at the moment. Used to buy Chi tea bags at Trader Joe's then, of course they discontinued them. Now I tend to stock up, just in case. Hot tea in the morning, another cup at work, iced tea at lunch. Dinner I usually switch to water with lemon.

I recently got a friend some Douglas Fir tip tea from Juniper Ridge, and he says it's really good and unique. They also have like a sage mint one.
My favorite is Rocky Mountain Roastery's Jakarta Clove. It's green tea, but it has a fantastic warming quality to it from the clove. Not too strong, though. I love it even without sweetening it, which, from me, is really saying something.
BangieB at 4:40PM on 01/13/09
I'm so with you on the tea obsession! I love all kinds of tea from herbal to blacks to greens...etc. Here is my list of all time favorites. It's quite diverse :)
Wissotzky Rosehip and Hibiscus Tea
Bigelow Darjeeling Tea
Celestial Seasonings Candy Cane Lane
Stash Lemon Ginger Tea
Stash Green Tea
If you haven't tried Stash teas yet, you should! I think they are my favorite brand as of late.

@michichan, you put milk in tiger tea? I like it steeped well, with honey.
plus peppermint tea, chamomile tea for sleep, and regular breakfast tea. green tea is ok, but i dont make it so often, i dont like the whole not quite boiling rule for the water.
blizcheetah at 12:00AM on 01/14/09
Stassen jasmine green tea for me.
Its not sweet and doesn't remind me of sucking on a mouthful of potpourri.
Its very fragrant with the heavenly aroma of real jasmine flowers.
It's very flavorful and goes really well with a bit of honey, but is fantastic on its own, too.
Also very refreshing cold!

oh i second mariage freres -- i am obsessed with the "pleine lune" flavor. it is NOT cheap but i got it as a gift years ago and HAVE to replace it every time i run out.
megannesta at 12:42AM on 01/14/09
Oh tea....how I love you. Actually, since I work at a grocery and nights can get quite boring I spend quality time facing the tea aisle. This however has resulted in an (un?)fortuneate glut of tea in my house....making a pot as I type this actually.
I'm also in the "ick to Tazo" club. I hate the fact that this is the only tea bags I can get at university at the coffee shops. It truly sucks when I've forgotten to replenish my personal stack of tea bags I carry with me.
As for favourites...I'm truly fond of the Morning Thunder. I call it Buffalo Tea. Due in fact that there is a bison on the box...I'm also very fond of Lady Earl Grey. It has a fruitier quality than her male counterpart and I enjoy it.
The most wondrous places I've ever been are the all the tea shops across China I stumbled in. So so so so soooooo many teas, and so little time to try them all. Though I gave it my damnednest. How I miss sitting on a little stool chatting in a stilted mix of broken Chinese and English with my newfound tea shop purveyor tasting teas and watching my yuan fly out of my pocket... *memories!~*
feriorrenna at 3:15PM on 01/14/09
I've switched to tea to cure myself of my addiction to coffee. I like chai and jasmine tea, and especially like a brand called Zsenso that I get through my own business. We have iced bottled tea (green, green with lemon, and green with peach) and regular tea bags, both "real" tea and herbal.
Find me on Facebook (Ashley Kuhlman Knowlton) if you want and I can send you samples of the tea bags. =)

ChelleyD01, could I ask you why you don't like green tea? I had been drinking a lot of tea and had a similar dislike for green tea before I found out green and white teas need to be steeped at a lower temperature than black and oolong teas. I have an electric kettle which regulates the temperatures for heating the water up, but if you're working with a stovetop kettle, you will want to take the kettle off the burner once the water has boiled, and let it sit for at least a minute to cool down before brewing green or white teas. These teas aren't as oxidized as black or oolong, so if one were to brew them with boiling water, it "burns" them, so they will have an unpleasant taste.
For tea suggestions from your list, I would direct you to Adagio. The website has a large variety of loose teas you may enjoy. The sample tins are good for about three or four cups each tin, if not more, and can be fetched for a decent cost.
I've become a fan of Rishi teas that I buy from Whole Foods, especially the Earl Grey. Here in Orlando, there are at least two shops/teahouses where one can buy loose tea: Infusion and Dandelion.
