American SE Readership
I know this is not a political forum, but I would love to send you my love and best wishes on this eve of a very important historical event.
As a Canadian, I follow your politics with interest and I share the same high expectations and excitement that you have for President Elect Obama. I feel like part of the SE family after stumbling upon your website two months ago and want you to know that I share your joy and anticipation.
I have not been as inspired by an American figure since the time of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Congratulations and Best Wishes!

Awe, thanks for your love and wishes. It's truly a moment to celebrate in Amercian history. Where abouts in Canada? Growing up we went to Ottawa for concerts, as it was the nearest big venue. Chinese food in Brockville or Cornwall Ontario are also fond memories. And well, when the drinking age went up from 18, to 19, to 21 we partied over in Brockville and some friends of mine always headed across the border for beer runs and ketchup flavored potato chips. Fries with vinegar or no?

@dhorst - You bet - fries with malt vinegar and salt! Our beer is stronger, did you notice?
I am from London, Ontario, a medium sized city between Detroit, MI, and Toronto, ON. We spend a lot of time in the USA, mostly in South Carolina - to me, it is God's country! To me, there is nothing finer than to walk into a restaurant in S.C. and to be greeted with giant pitcher of ice cold tea, and to have a choice - sweetened or unsweetened - bliss! There is hardly anywhere in Canada that will serve anything but iced tea in cans.
Ottawa is a fabulous city. I have relatives there and have visited often.

Oh, yes we certainly have noticed that your beer is stronger--a selling point among some of our friends.

thanks! Welcome to the SE family!

@bareneed-welcome, I am also a newcomer to this site. Like dhorst, I spend time in Canada in the summer, Brockville as a hotspot for beer and Fish N Chips. I also enjoy Ottawa, and I enjoy a occasional trip to Smith's Falls to visit the Hershey factory:-)

Amen!
We've got a bunch of TVs in the offices - in various offices and cubicles - because of the kind of work we do. You can bet that people will be gathered around. I'm also told that there's a big TV on one of the boardrooms upstairs.
@dhorst: We Canadians make fun of American beer. It's part of our national identity, like hockey, Celine Dion (keep her, please), poutine, and Tim Horton's.

Thank you so much. Every time I see something on TV about the Inauguration or MLK day, I well up. Planning on a lot of tissues over the next 48 hours. When the US inaugurates a new president, the world is generally paying attention. This time around, however, I can hear the world cheering right along.
This is the very first moment I wish we weren't in the middle of a move so I could have a proper Inauguration Party!

@dmcavanagh - before you visit Smith's Falls you had better check - if I am right, I believe I heard the Hershey factory is (or is about to) close!! My son used to recruit there for his job and he always went in and bought a gigantic bag of seconds - I love Hershey's chocolate - another example of Yankee know how!

@bareneed--I have visited Toronto on a number of occasions and was always touched by the warmth of Canadian hospitality to visitors (despite the cold of the Canadian weather). It's so nice to hear the rest of the world is watching and cheering along during these historic days!
I would propose a toast, but my wimpy American tolerance wouldn't get me through half a pint with you! But extra salt and malt vinegar on the fries! And maple syrup on my pancakes for breakfast!
HeartofGlass at 1:37PM on 01/19/09
Everyone raise your Baracktail up high and toast, "Hail to the Chief - Thank God you're here."

I think everyone is excited for a multitude of reasons. But when it comes right down to it, the Obama's feel like they could be your next door neighbors. They have close family ties. They obviously love each other (hard to fake that) and they relate to multiple generations. Each, in their own right, are highly educated and intelligent. Their kids are adorable. In so many ways, we feel an affinity with them. God bless America. This fresh breeze was a long time coming.
