What to serve with Osco Bucco?
I am having a dinner party this weekend and want to make beef Osco Bucco.
I will have a green salad, crusty bread and banana creme' brulee.
What else can I serve on the plate?
Thanks~

I've served Osso Buco served on top of soft polenta - it's a very lovely combination. Risotto or even mash would also make a good side.

Risotto a la Milanese is what I grew up eating with osso buco:
olive oil/butter
1 onion
saffron
arborio rice (usually about 2 cups so you have leftovers)
when the onions are translucent, fry the rice for few minutes with the onions
add stock and a little white wine
cook until tender
Oh, and for a special treat you can add a little bone marrow to the risotto. Remember to make a gremolata (lemon peel, parsley and garlic) to sprinkle sparingly on top.
This was my favorite of all meals growing up.

Polenta made with parmesan cheese, low sodium beef or chicken broth and mushrooms, my favorite... or mashed potatoes. I love them both.

LearP's suggestions (risotto milanese, gremolata) are certainly the traditional. If I were making osso buco, I would definitely go that route. Unless you've made it before and are looking for something different.

All the above or gnocchi (flavored with whatever you want), also would be good is broccoli raab.

I serve osso buco on plain ole orzo. I find the veal and sauce is rich enough and doesn't need the overload of risotto.

Take a small ramekin and fill it with the risotto or with the rice or with the polenta and make a small structure in the middle of your plate.
Throw your osso bucco over it. So nice a plate.
The meal sounds great. Way to go!!!

Braised Kale!!!
De-rib the kale, wash it well, cut it up, saute in olive oil & garlic...then deglaze pan with a dash of red wine, then add about 1 cup of chicken broth and let cook down until nice and tender.

Not on a plate, but in a glass. A lovely Chianti.

ummm iz......izn't your Chianti an olympic sized pool for gnats? just sayin'..... "this wine has a strange fruit seed mouth feel, yet it is oddly bold and meaty in it's undertones"
PerkyMac at 9:18AM on 12/30/08
I love polenta and risotto, but the orzo is probably a wise move, and an excellent suggestion. Much less hovering while it cooks.

I 2nd iz's suggestion for Chianti;
It's up to you as far as texture goes--but hold the gnats please perky haha
At a resturaunt I worked at we served Osso Bucco with pan-fried fingerling potatoes? You could do them with italian herbs?
Crusty bread is great to soak up all the golden Osso Juicies! Nice!
hungrychristel at 10:18AM on 12/30/08
I would also suggest polenta.
aungeinphx at 11:06AM on 12/30/08
another vote for gremolata, risotto or soft polenta...not a lot, just a cushion for the osso bucco.
I also prefer Amarone or a ripasso with osso bucco.

Ha Ha Perk ~ It just so happens, I bought Chianti yesterday and it was the first thing that entered my mind! Regarding the gnats that is. I say give the gnats MD 20/20 and serve the Chianti with the osso bucco.

Paremsan Polenta and roasted butternut squash... good stuff

I also thought about serving Garlic Mashed potatoes.
