Stranded in an airport.
I've been sitting here for some time waiting for an update on my flight, and I've just started craving something really, really... bad. Like a Cinnabon. I don't know. Something... airporty. What's your favorite airport food? Fast food? Is there somewhere you must eat while traveling? Or do you simply have a go-to travel food (I usually go for Mentos or Skittles)?

gum for the plane... but the airport? cinnabon is the best. we dont have them here in central maine so it worth spending more than you would normally to get a treat i cant normally get. the other chains are a ripoff imo.

Airport - scrambled egg & bagel sandwich with a cup of coffee. Purse snack - fruity mentos. I also have gum and a couple of packages of peanut butter crackers.

I love ice cream at the airport, but then again, I love ice cream in any situation. As for the snacks I pack myself, I like to have some kind of combo of granola bars, fruit snacks, and Wheat Thins on hand.

I search for unique restaurants in airports before going to a chain, since I already know what their food tastes like. I think this goes back to eating at train stations in Japan on top of ordering region-specific specialty dishes on the train at different towns.
What was the most surprising for me was the Japanese restaurant at the Detroit ap. In Cleveland, I usually fly out early in the morning since I am likely flying to Hawaii. I go to one of the stations that serves food from the West Side Market and buy Lebanese food.
There are some airports that have great shopping like Minneapolis where I have no time for food (what?!). The last time I stopped there, I bought 2 coats, a sweater, and a bunch of knick knacks.
Cinnabon and Nathan's are decent places to fall back on. I wouldn't advise getting the Philly cheesesteak at Nathan's. My husband got one once while I scarfed down a hot dog. He doesn't throw food away very often, but struggled to eat half of it. He finally gave up and threw it away.
Many years ago, barbecue corn nuts were my traveling snack until I got scared when I thought I cracked a molar on an extra hard one.

I fully expect to be stranded in Newark next Tuesday morning. But that's ok, because there's an Au Bon Pan there. Hopefully, it will turn into a 1 day layover, in which case I will go across to NYC and have some pizza. See, now I'm actually looking forward to this trip. I will actually be disappointed if I don't get stuck. Thanks!!!

Whenever I visit my boyfriend, I get stuck in some lovely southern town. While in Texas I ate a tasty biscuit slathered in butter and honey from some super small concession stand near my terminal. I forget the name of the place because the only thing I can remember about the Dallas airport is the fact that they have vending machines where you can purchase iPods and Proactive face wash- which I thought was beyond bizarre.
In Memphis, I stopped in and had a massive chocolate chip muffin at this bizarre blues cafe located in the airport. It was dark and hip and there was a guy singing on stage and people were smoking inside! As a native Angeleno and a pretty young one at that, I've never seen anyone smoke inside a bar or restaurant. It was a bizarre sight, but the muffin is worth mentioning, that's how good it was.

Cassaendra love the mention of The West Side Market, A true gem....

Would I be dating myself if I said that your thread title makes me think of Grease?
I don't have a go-to airport food, I don't travel enough. That said, purse-sized bags of cashews and M&Ms are shiny and tasty.

anything from the bar.

If I'm lucky, the airport will have a few restaurants that are unique to the city/state/country. I am partial to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport because they house so many locally-owned eateries for a smaller international airport: Amy's Ice Creams (Mexican Vanilla is to die for), Salt Lick BBQ, Matt's Famous El Rancho, Mangia Pizza, Waterloo Icehouse and Austin Java just to name a few. The live music stage in the the airport is a bonus.

I try to eat as little as possible when I'm traveling given that I'm usually sitting most of the time--eating a lot of preservative-filled, salty food just makes me feel ill. I'd rather save my appetite for the 'real food' of my destination and not eating and drinking lots of water makes it easier to sleep on the plane.
During long flights and lay-overs, which occasionally happened when I was in England and going back and forth 'across the pond' on holidays, I favored sandwiches from Boots or Costa Coffee.

Most anything as long as it's not a nationwide junk food chain. One of my favorite airports for being stuck is Charlotte, North Carolina. Tons of local places serving food at the terminals, with lots of country style rockers available to sit on while waiting.
Second good place for a lay over is Newark - I always make it a point to grab a Nathans Hot Dog when I'm there.
Also agree with the post above. Austin - Bergstrom airport is great.

Virtually anything made of potato. For me, this is the ultimate junk food, because I have to pretty much avoid potatoes; although they're generally really, really bad for my joints, I LOVE them. At airports, I've been known to eat horrible flavours of the poorest brands. On my most recent flight (a week ago), I stuffed myself with 'chicken' and 'beef' flavoured crisps... mostly because I couldn't find the marmite flavoured ones. Lack of time was the only thing that prevented me from chasing this with chips. Urgh.

Bloody Mary with all the fixin's, a meal in itself.
Shelleyanne at 9:09AM on 12/20/08
the airport in miami has a great cuban cafeteria restaurant..... home cooking ... what a welcomed site amidst all of the corporate chain places. i usually bring my own sandwich for the plane, either an avocado sandwich of sort or a proscuitto sandwich.... or both!!! and fruit. always a piece of fruit to wash it down.... love chips, though, i always get the terra blues on jet blue.....
pooch at 10:12AM on 12/20/08
Austin-Bergstrom is great, and Charlotte, NC has to be one of the nicest airports I've ever been in. Once when I went, there were complimentary chapstick, sanitary wipes, tampons, and breath mints in the womens' bathroom. Now that's service!
Christina at 10:34AM on 12/20/08
ok, nightowl, you think you're old? the original stage production of grease was mounted at the kingston mines, a blues bar in chicago. the venue was so small that the audience was required to sit on the floor. i saw it there twice.
i always make it a point to bring food for airplanes. cut up veggies, a piece of fruit, a sandwich, and some chocolate are the usual items i carry with me.
if you're stranded in an airport and need entertainment and sustenance, i say the calories don't count. go for that cinnabon!
cybercita at 10:45AM on 12/20/08
I'm with the OP - craving really really bad stuff in the airport. it's like, you're surrounded by shitty food anyways, so what's the use in fighting it? Also, I don't eat much junk food in my daily life, so I kind of use travelling and not having much else to choose from as my excuse that it's ok. thankfull I'm not travelling by plane as much as I used to, and I was NEVER 'stuck' in an airport with decent food. ever. In fact, it's rare that I find decent food in any airport, thus the lure of fast food's consistency. Even if it's $8 for a cheeseburger, I know exactly what it will taste like.
joyyy at 10:57AM on 12/20/08
PumpkinBear, I was actually in Dallas when I posted this, and I noticed those vending machines! Kind of weird. And to all else who echoed my thoughts on Cinnabon, I totally wish I could have gone for it, but pretty much everything in the airport was closed by the time I arrived in DFW last night. Went for a burrito, which ended up being so-so, but at least it was something. Wildberry Skittles totally would have been a better choice.
pearl at 2:07AM on 12/21/08
Call me weird but I love airports. If I have enough time I will study the food map to decide what to eat. I usually try to find something that I can't get at home, preferably not a chain and hopefully not too heavy if I'm going to have to sit on a long flight. That said, last week I had a horrible fish taco at Minneapolis (outgoing flight delayed 6 hours), a disgusting breakfast at Washington Dulles and settled on veggie pizza at Sbarro in Philly since the first two were so bad. I'd wanted to try a local place, but thought I'd better stick with safe since it was only 10 in the morning and I was too hungry to wait for lunch. (Was going to try a Philly Cheesesteak in Philly, but didn't think I could stomach it for breakfast.)

Speaking of eating light...that reminded me of a dreadful mistake my husband and I made when we flew out of an ap in a small town. Since we don't have Sonic in Cleveland, we gorge ourselves when we're in KS visiting. For breakfast, I ate some chili cheese tater tots, a burger, and half of a chili cheese coney. My husband had the same.
We got on our prop plane that seats ~12 to get to KC. The pilot warned us that there was a system we were going to fly through in addition to high winds. We sat in the back row. The pilot even came by to ask us if we would be ok. We said pshh we'll be fine. Not 5 minutes into the flight, WHOOSH. We dropped down and raised up in altitude. I looked at my husband and put my fingers to my lips and blew out my cheeks, laughing, when I noticed he looked rather green. The constant roller coaster ride lasted for 15 minutes until we hit our first of 3 stops. I did feel the hot dog and chili rise up a couple times.
I try to eat as light as possible so I don't have to poop in airplanes. That's the one downside of eating when traveling.
Cassaendra at 1:44PM on 12/21/08
NYTimes just did an article on this. If you're at O'Hare, you've apparently got the worst of the bunch. I generally try to survive on trail mix until I get to my destination. Good luck!

To add some more to the thread I always carry a bottle of water, some almonds and a couple of granola bars in my carry on, when I get on a plane. Happened too many times where you pull away from the gate and sit on the tarmac for an hour or two.
Ribster at 3:16PM on 12/21/08
My husband travels frequently and always asks me to pick up some cheddar Combos to pack. He usually ends up eating Sbarro's in the airport and eats the Combos on the plane or at the hotel.
dhorst at 3:50PM on 12/21/08
I love Cinnabon. But what I crave when stranded is the nearest bar.
pjracz10 at 7:04PM on 12/21/08
in the Newark/Liberty airport they have the biggest yummiest salted cashews I've ever had.. .I get a pound of them (sometimes more) whenever I fly out of that airport.
Southern_bella at 9:22PM on 12/21/08
I was just stuck at PDX for 14 hours and ended up eating Wendy's for the first time in my life. Big mistake, I felt really terrible for a few hours afterwards. Next time I'll step up and eat at one of the brewpubs.
alexb at 10:02AM on 12/22/08
The bar.
