snow storm

I'm in the middle of a snow storm! Of course I am dying to do all my christmas baking. First off I think I'll make a nice pot of chili and homemade bread for supper...Anyone else immediately go to the kitchen during these snow storms??

The bf made chili yesterday- good timing since we're supposed to get five inches tomorrow! We also have lots of eggs so I see some experimental whatevers-in-the-fridge omelettes in my future.

Ice storm here at the moment. I don't dare start baking, because I invariably lose power whenever there's a storm. No heat, no water, no phone unless you have a prehistoric one that doesn't require electricity. I did get another cell phone. Can't even flush!

I'm making meatloaf for supper, maybe I'll try making it now, so I'll have something to eat, just in case. And it's time to fill some pots and the bathrub with water. I just love ice (NOT).

We're supposed to get a foot or so, which isn't so bad. Our snow removal rocks. So, we'll do our usual and I'll make pizza tonight. @Perky, I hear you on the ice situation. About 8-10 years ago there was a really nasty ice storm up north and my parents were without electricity for 3 weeks. My mom was cooking everything on the gas grill. People were smart enough to bring any food they weren't able to cook to the local school where there was emergency power and shelter available. Hopefully you won't lose power and it will change over to snow.

yup, it just started here in columbia county, ny ...... went from nothing to looking like a blizzard in 5 minutes..... i've got a nice fresh pork butt that i'm going to slow cook, with garlic and fresh oranges..... then i'm going to sit on my butt and watch somethin' on TV. love it....

@dhorst ~ I believe it's supposed to change over to snow later. Our snow is typically much, much heavier than Syracuse snow - which is light enough for a snow blower.

I have to move right after the holidays and have already moved out most of my possessions, including my gas grill. That was my back-up for cooking. I don't drive until everything is clear and dry. Slid on black ice one too many times and now I'm terrified. Don't ask.

I think 9 days is the longest I've gone without power. Your poor Mama! I don't know if our schools have emergency power. I live near a nuclear power plant and the evacuation plan sends people to schools, but not the ones within a 10 mile radius. I need to check that out.

Enjoy your pizza!

The snow stopped yesterday afternoon for us, and I love to cook when it snows. Especially granola, it just smells so good! I also did black bean chipotle soup at the beginning of the storm and had the bf crockpot up some lambshanks the other day while I was at work. mmmmm.

Best of luck to anyone getting ice. It's part of the reason I moved west (well, weather in general was one of those reasons, and we have yet to get covered in ice out here since I've moved). Ah, the memories.

It's frozen rain here--I shouldn't complain because I loathe shoveling snow and still have power--9 days without is 9 days too many, Perky, as far as I'm concerned. Also, because I'm a freelancer working from home, no power means no pay in the sense that I get behind on my deadlines.

I always say I'm going to bake during a storm, but I tend to get too panicy and claustrophobic to focus--I really don't like this type of weather.

I did go shopping this morning, before it got so frozen, though--does anyone always know why people ask 'do you have bread, milk, and eggs,' before a storm? I always wonder because 1. Lots of people don't eat those items 2. Shouldn't they say...and fruit...because that would keep without power...

@dhorst - my stepdaughter goes to SU! you're in snowland, aren't you.... i've been to syracuse a few times now, you guys have some great restaurants.... how is that bbq dinosaur???? anygood?

@pooch-- the dinosaur is great--nothing like good food and good music for a great evening out. Is your stepdaughter a basketball fan? Things can get pretty nuts in the "loud house," as the sportscasters like to refer to the Dome. Now there's a place that could really use some better food. The selection is kind of limited. Yes, we are in snowland, but nothing like the folks north of us in Oswego. There are still snowbanks around in May up there.

@dhorst - hi, i heard about the basketball stuff, she's into soccer and football -- and probably parties!!!! her favorite sport of all. (hmmm)
but we love taking rides to and fro syracuse a few times a year, during summer because we get to stop at the ithaca farmer's market. wow.
love that place.....

we'll have to check out dinosaur next time .... love those neighborhood joints. well, stay warm and snug as a bug in a rug....

Heh, I'm in New Orleans, it doesn't snow in New Orleans.

OH WAIT! It did snow last week, but it was in the morning, I had to work that day, and by the time I got home I was tired and the snow had all melted. When I lived where it sort of snowed more often, I definitely jumped at the chance to make chili and bake chocolate chip cookies while it snowed.

@nightowl ~ I thought it didn't snow in Vegas either! It can be a nightmare in places that aren't prepared with salt trucks and plows. I wouldn't mind being snowed in there, if I had a plush hotel room, great restaurant and a boatload of money to squander. ;-)

in vermont here.... and it's coming down pretty hard right now, supposed to get up to ten inches... so tonight i'm doing flank steak with rice pilaf and broccoli and tomorrow roast chicken.
We lost power about a week ago because of the ice storm, but we were lucky andit was only out for a few hours.

It's raining here in Ohio, but I'm heading up to my parents' in Michigan on Sunday afternoon (weather permitting, of course)! The timing seems perfect for a week-long orgy of baking cookies, munching on random food, and watching the kids (10, 7, and 2 1/2) play out in the snow (preferably from the other side of the sliding glass door).

@Perky - I HATE black ice. I lost a car to it last year at Thanksgiving. I spent the next several months spending lord-only-knows-how-much on rental cars while I saved up for a new car, which we just bought last month. I will happily let my husband drive until April or so.

I'm so jealous of you ALL! I'm stuck down here south of the Mason-Dixon line, and while you all are in the deep freeze or enjoying getting snowed in, I'm stuck here in ATL in 70 degree weather! I grew up in Boston, and I miss the first big snowstorm most of all (that, and a decent pizza). When I lived there, yes, I'd pray to get snowed in for the weekend so that I could cook and bake and make my house smell all yummy and feed my family tasty treats. Down here we veeeery rarely see snow. sniff sniff
(it doesn't keep me out of the kitchen, though)

@juliebugs~well at least you can grow some herbs outside...that's the thing I don't like about winter up here. Gotta get me an aerogarden.

julie, hon, me too. After the cold snap, it's been nothing but shorts weather. It's weird.

Hi all, here in Park City, Utah it is dumping! And supposed to get down to -10 tonight. I do like to cook in this kind of weather, think I will make veggie chilli tonight. Not sure how I found this website, but it looks fun.

Had a snow day from school on Tuesday. I made Texas chile and homemeade veg beef soup...very warm and comforting. Kitchen smelled great all day!

Oh it snowed in Seattle, a whopping 3 inches, now the whole city is in a panic, everything is closed up. I get to watch some Bozo try and ride down a steep hill and smash into a parked car YEEEEEEEE Haaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Yes I make chicken and dumplings with a lots of veggies and lots of booze for me.

I made chili today. I like to make something that'll take all day on snow days. A pot bubbling away on the stove or in the over and plenty of wine is all you need to get through a snow day!

It's Blizzarding here in Western NY (North of Niagara Falls) at least a foot &1/2. I ventured out today, to check out a gift sent from my brother in California to my mom's it was a 25lb. wheel of Cheese from the Azores, Portugal. My mom spends January to April there and decided because of the economy to stay here this year. She has been going for the past 7 yrs. Well that is a $200.00 chunk of cheese and we will cut it on Christmas!! Crackers anyone?

The veg chilli turned out great, easy and didn't hugely mess up the kitchen. I used the standard Veracruz Chile Molido, toasted for a bit in a pan and it was so fresh and smelled so wonderful, now it is six in the am, 12 below zero, and what am I doing? Sitting here at the computer eating chilli, fantastic!

@joan.. a nice hot portuguese roll with cheese and soft butter. what's better than that...

I'm stuck in White Plains (80 miles south of home) at the hotel at which I thought I'd be staying for only 3 nights. Now it's looking like 5. I am so sick of room service and want to be home braising some beef shank in veal stock with loads of veggies! They don't even get TCM here! Or Food Network! WAAHHHH!
