Serious Eating resolutions for 2009...got any?
First we have to get thru the remainder of the Holiday Season 2008...what a year it has been! In some ways, I am glad to see it go...Thinking about 2009, any 'serious eaters' making resolutions concerning food and dining?
I, for example, will be a bit more discrimminating about my food, dining and beverage choices in the New Year. (Resolutions are always so easy to break though...)

My serious eating resolution is to keep doing it.

Another kitchen purge. I've been getting rid of the stuff I don't use, and I've been replacing the sub-par quality stuff with better quality. It's about time for me to do another drawer-by-drawer and cabinet-by-cabinet sort and purge.
I also want to spend some more quality time with cookbooks that I haven't looked at for a while. And maybe get rid of some, although that's hard for me to do. But I might spend a day or three rearranging the cookbooks again.
I'd really like to get some classier serving utensils. Or at least some that match the silverware. What I've got is a hodge-podge of odd pieces that don't match anything. Or I use tablespoons and dessert forks for serving.
Probably ought to be just a tad more discriminating in cookbook purchases. I got a little carried away this year, and my Christmas list added to the collection. Yes, I love cookbooks, and I read them and I use them, but I ought to get my impulses under control when I go to the used bookstore. Garage sales are another story. When it's a box of books for a dollar, I'm still going to have trouble turning that down. Of course, if I get that new bookshelf that DH was talking about, I'll have more space for books, so this will be a nonissue for a while longer.

I would like to cook at home more and eat out less. And when I do eat out it will be in mostly ethnic restaurants which stretch my dollar and don't make me feel ripped off. No more fancy, fireworks on the plate type of food for me.
I will also blog more regularly on hameshahungry.blogspot.com

I really need to cook more often with my kids, and let go of my control freak kitchen tyrant nature. I definitely need to reorganize the kitchen. And lastly, join a CSA and start getting a weekly box of veggies.

I need to sit and write down (or rather, type) my recipes in proper English and not in those bizarre abbreviations/half-words I use when I write them down as I cook and make them up.
This year we started picking out own produce at a farm in South Jersey and absolutely loved it, for so many reasons. We started doing it in late July, and our 2009 resolution is to start earlier and not miss strawberries this time!
Otherwise, I agree with LoCo.

I need to get rid of 10+ years of cooking magazines. Any takers?
Gourmet Guy at 5:20PM on 12/14/08
I want to start eating more whole foods and less processed food.
I want to start a habit of cooking and eating at home more often than not.
I want to find meatless meals that the picky boyfriend will find satisfying.
I want to try at least 2 new foods in 2009.
I want to start a recipe file.
nightowl at 5:27PM on 12/14/08
@gourmet guy I'm sure I'd love to, but the shipping would be horrendous.
nightowl at 5:28PM on 12/14/08
Waste less food
Have people over more
Save my calories for the best quality
Get to the farmer's market often, without over-buying
emilydev at 6:52PM on 12/14/08
I want to make a recipe Tastebook for friends and family. Some of the best recipes are in my head.
This year we branch out in our epicurean adventures to try new foods and then make them.
Paella is the challenge for the year. Today I bought a great paella pan and lobster is about 5 bucks a pound.
Like emily I plan to go to the farmers market every week instead of now and then.
Calcium I need more of it (Sally Field told me so!!!) so I plan to make sure I have that covered.
Like db I had to purge some things since I lost my damn mind at Emile Henry/Mauviel this weekend. So once I got kick started I just went cabinet to cabinet and started purging. I intend to also purge some more and possibly ebay some stuff that I no longer use.
I want to bake more with different flours and flavors.
I have worked hard to get the husband's cholestrol down and between the med and my meal planning it is within normal range. YEA so more of that as well.
The last one is to eat out more. This year I cooked a lot. I now want to go out once a week. In the summer probably more.

Honestly? I resolve to give up something that I have done every single day of my life for nearly six years. I resolve to *stop* counting every shingle calorie and every single minute on the treadmill or lifting weights. I resolve to let go, basically, and to just let life (and food) do what it does. I will still eat healthy foods, and I will still exercise (especially since that is my only real "me" time that I have), but I will relax more and not calculate the nutritional information for everything that I eat. And if I miss a day of exercise (something that typically happens twice a year - no joke), I resolve to just be okay with that.
I love food, and I want to enjoy it more. Life is far too short.
Traveller at 8:48PM on 12/14/08
@Gourmet Guy -- yes please!! No, seriously ...
I think my resolution would be to cook in more. I don't order out too often, but still, it's pretty much the same thing every day, and not only is it boring, but it can't be good for me. I will never give up my coffee, though, haha.
kfarrel3 at 9:02PM on 12/14/08
i want to cook and eat more whole grains. i also want to substantially reduce the amount of sugar and dairy i consume.
cybercita at 9:02PM on 12/14/08
no more hard stuff
Keight at 12:00AM on 12/15/08
@nightowl, you'd be surpised how cheap shipping things by "book rate" can be. It travels on the back of a snail, but it's cheap.
@Jerzee, before you go to ebay, offer it to us. Too bad SE doesn't have a way for us to sell/trade stuff. But I have a feeling I'd love to go to your garage sales. And fer cripes sakes, tell us what you got this weekend!
dbcurrie at 2:01AM on 12/15/08
Try to use the dozen or so cookbooks I have rather than always looking on the internet for recipes. Not like I have been finding stinkers online, but I figure if I have the book I might as well rationalize keeping it.
FrostyGhost at 1:17PM on 12/15/08
@db ~ thanks for the tip about book rate. I'll have to look into that.
@Jerzee ~ ditto Madame Currie. What did you get at the sale???
PerkyMac at 1:20PM on 12/15/08
@traveller, i agree with you, life is far too short -- i want to enjoy more, work less (if possible, but probably not) -- only eat the best quality things when i can afford them.... and when i can't -- have the best quality things that don't cost a fortune -- like organic beans & rice!!!! feel good
about what i'm putting into my body.

Thanks serious eaters for sharing...I will also look towards 'healthier' choices at home or when dining out without dipriving myself on occasion...and work at not over eating and imbibing.
