Raw food (-ism/-ists)

I'm trying to include much more raw food in my diet, and am curious if there are any other raw foodists here on Serious Eats? I'd love to learn what the best raw food blogs, recipes, books, etc. are. I'm also curious whether there are any omni raw foodists, or if it tends to be just vegan? I wonder how raw meats/fish would factor into the raw food diet.

I thought it was just supposed to be raw veg food. Andrew Zimmer did a show that had a raw foodist included. Try googling his show. Sorry, I'm not as clever as everyone else with the link things.
But, haha, be careful looking at what HE eats if that's the way you're going.

One of my daughters eats a raw foods diet. She'll be here in a couple of weeks and I'll see if she has any recommendations for you. She has been eating this way for years. Sorry I can't be more help right now.

Here is a link to some recs from our favorite raw foods restaurant:

If you click that link, then click on Arnold's Raw Links. I thought it would go directly to that page, but it didn't.

There are raw-foodists who eat raw meat, fish, and milk, but by and large it seems that it's mostly vegan. Check out Vegan Menu's 'Raw Food Wednesdays' - great-looking food, usually with recipes.

Now Raw Milk..... there is a food, and a good one too.... after that I like tomatoes off the vine, carrots out of the ground.... I'm just not sure I want all my food to be raw.... oh wait... steak tartare... aside from that, seriously...

@Pavlov, I'm with you. Raw rice is not good for my molars. However, I've found that for some people, the definition of "raw" is not entirely what we think it is. For example, using a dehydrator is not considered cooking by some proponents of raw foods, because the temp doesn't reach a certain magic number that makes the food be considered "cooked."

And I know one raw foodist who was perfectly comfortable eating things from cans and bottles from the grocery store, because he didn't heat them before eating. But that's a whole other misguided story.

@Ether, as with any restrictive diet, you need to make sure that you're covering all your nutritional bases after eliminating food categories. Some nutrients are released by cooking, and others are going to be more commonly found in foods that you probably won't be eating raw, so just make sure that you're finding ways to make up for what you're cutting out of your diet. There are plenty of books on the subject.

Hi Ether,

Great that you are aiming to add more raw food into your diet. Check out my site for raw recipes and other raw goodies, Also do a Google search and a YouTube search and you'll be sure to find a lot of great stuff.

Good Luck
