Eggnog is believed to have originated in England. This sweetened milk, cream, egg and liquor drink was reserved for the aristocracy who had access to these fresh ingredients. Common additions included brandy, rum, and whiskey. Nog may have come from a wooden cup for alcohol with that name, or from grog, a Colonial term for rum. Add-ins include nutmeg and cinnamon, and toppings of ice cream or whipped cream.
Since it is only served between Thanksgiving and the New Year celebrations, it is a very special celebratory drink.
One of my fondest memories is making it for my grandmother when I was a very little girl - and not just during the holidays. She needed the extra calories and she loved eggnog. My family always had homemade eggnog with Mom's cookies while we decorated, wrapped presents and prepared for Santa, and with Christmas breakfast.
I never had it with alcohol until a few Christmas parties. Everyone had their own special recipe and it was good stuff. Now, with the fear of salmonella, most buy it commercially, then add their favorites.
I only like mine from one local dairy. I sprinkle nutmeg on top, wouldn't object to a topping of whipped cream or ice cream. Don't usually drink it spiked, but brandy or rum would be nice.
