Orochiette - did I buy a bad brand?

I'm normally a penne or linguini gal, but have been branching out into different pasta shapes recently, one of which was a supermarket premium brand of orochiette. First time I cooked it, didn't like it at all as was weirdly slimey in texture. I put this down to the sauce, which was also a new one for me. However, tried it again last night with an old favourite and same problem - could barely finish it. Had the texture of a bad homemade pasta that hadn't been rolled enough. Have I just been unlucky with the brand I bought or is this characteristic of this shape? Thanks all!!

Uh, oh...I would try a different brand. My kids love the "little ear" shape but we've never had a gummy, slimey thing. We love the shape, it's wonderful for kids capturing there first bites of different sauces.

i love that shape as well. the little cups hold the right amt of sauce and are nice and bite size

i'd try another brand and/or make sure you have enough water in the pot. Barilla makes orecchiette and is most friendly for cooks. also has a good flavor and texture. you basically have to overboil the stuff for 3 or more times recommended time to kill it. even a few extra minutes and it's usually still a little al dente. though i like the premium stuff, it's much more sensitive to cooking

definitely a bad brand..... usually they cook up like regular pasta.... i love them with peas and caramelized onion. pasta piselle...

I love the way Giada says Orecchiette.

Heh, I almost bought a bag of these today - alas - no whole wheat version though so farfalle and rotini it is this time.
