i was buying them regularly at the union square greenmarket but i haven't seen them for a few weeks. ditto at fairway -- they had them briefly. you might be too late this year, unfortunately.

They usually have them at the fruit market in the Chelsea Market.

In case anyone else cares, Manhattan Fruit Exchange indeed still have quince. Good lookin out bauwau2u!

They have fresh local quinces at the General Greene in Brooklyn. I was there today and they had about 6 of them. It's right above the Lafayette Ave. C train.

I had never cooked with them before. I poached them last night in sugar, lemon and spices. What a hypnotic, powerful aroma. The wild love child of apple and pear.

You should. I was blown away. At once familiar and also completely exotic. I've had the paste before, but this was a totally new thing. They're very tough though, so eating them raw would probably be limited in possible preparations. David Lebovitz, from whom I got the idea to poach and them make into tarte tatin, suggests grating them, which sounds like a very good idea for eating them fresh. Probably would be very good in brunoise form too, though much more work.
