Liverwurst: Way or No Way?

On the simple sandwich thread, LPC mentioned his favorite liverwurst sandwich. I love it, too! He likes cheese, I don't.

Mine has liverwurst, onion slices (prefer as sweet as I can find - vidalia is good) on pumpernickel or marble rye with Hellman's mayo and a spicy brown mustard. Claussen's kosher dill pickle and a few chips added to the plate and I'm soooooo happy.

I also love the price - I usually buy a 3" chunk, and it costs less than a dollar. I get a lot of sandwiches from that, and it tastes good on saltines, too.

Are you a lover or not? If so, how do you eat it?

I enjoy my liverwurst on toasted bread. No onion or mustard. Chips on the side are nice.

I used to love this stuff ( I grew up with it ) till I was about 7 yrs old and got sick after eating a sandwich (probabley not the liverwurst just me getting to excited about something) but as a rule (with me) and this goes with alcohol as well, no matter what if I get sick from it I loose total taste for it, so I will not eat liverwurst to this day. But I do like Braunschweiger and I spread it on a fresh German rolls with some sort of cheese and assorted German deli meats and sliced pickles.

Way! I love it on rye with whole grain mustard. In fact, I need to put it on my "to buy" list...

@PerkyMac Get outta my head!!! We just had some a couple of weeks ago and that is how I eat it (pump is just divine) without the chips. As I sit and enjoy my perfect liverwurst sandwich DH has his with catsup. Love him beyond words. but yikes!!

I think it was 4th grade, and I wanted a liverwurst (and nothing else) sandwich every day for lunch...for at least half the year.

Up here, sam's Club carries my favorite brand (Koegel's from Flint) in a 10-lb size ... yum!!

no way. my mom used to eat those things. makes my toes curl just thinking about it.

A guilty pleasure for me. On pumpernickel bread with mustard and lettuce. The best was the homemade stuff that the german butcher shop had in my hometown. It had mushrooms and other things in it.

@pijracz10, I did not realize there was a distinct difference between liverwurst and Braunschweiger?

@Perky....W.A.Y......exactly the same way you like it.Good rye bread, mustard, mayo, claussen pickles and plain chips.....mmmmm @pjracz10 ....whats the diff between liverwurst an braunschweiger?...I always thought they were relatively the same.
@ LPC....haven't tried the Kogel's yet,but here in Florida I like Kahn's

@LPC ~ 10 lbs - wow! How many are you feeding? Does it keep well? I only buy what I can use in a few days, but I'd buy more if I can safely keep it. I wouldn't think you could freeze it?

Only once in a while WAY. Bad for the cholesterol ya know.

WAY!!!! I used to have a horrible time finding it when I moved to the south, I went through withdrawals, now that its readily available I am a happy woman. It used to be liverwurst on a poppy seed bagel lightly toasted with swiss cheese and yellow mustard. now adays its liverwust on thin sliced rye lightly toasted with whole grain mustard hold the cheese. hmmm I think I'm having a craving now. Thanks Perky!

I LOVE IT ON WHOLE WHEAT BREAD AND THERE'S NOT MUCH TO COMPARE TO HAVING IT LATE NIGHT WITH WATER CRACKERS!

WAY. Fresh piece of Calabrese bread, butter, coarse liverwurst, mixed with green onion, green relish and a bit of mayo - bliss - but my arteries are narrowing as I think about it!

@LunaPierCook - I also am interested in the 10 lb. size - do you cut it into pieces and freeze it, or, feed your neighbourhood for days?

I haven't eaten it since I went veg as a preteen, but used to love it as a little kid--one of the few savory foods I really liked. Lots of happy memories sitting with my aunt's old cat and sharing slices.

Absolutely on the liverwurst. So, I guess, "way." (As an aside, when did "way" or "no way" become a thing?)

Way...mother goose liverwurst rules here in the Northeast.
I bring it to my father-in-law down in Alabama because he can't get it there...the plane always smells so good.

oh so very WAY! i used to eat it when i was a kid. man oh man. i'd love some now.

@chanterelle I am a psycho, it is all in the name. But I think that the braunschweiger is made up with pork and something else is what our butcher in Austria told us and different sorts of spices, it is more spicier yet mellower flavor then liverwurst. I can tell the difference like I can from Coke to Pepsi.

I haven't had liverwurst in over 40 years. Grew up on Mother Goose brand and now have a definite craving for it.

I get the 10 pounder when the kids will be here for more than a few days.

From wikipedia: "Braunschweiger (named after Braunschweig, Germany) is a type of liverwurst (pork liver sausage) which is nearly always smoked."

On good rye or a good hard roll with thin sliced red onion, lettuce, mayo and stone ground mustard.

Oh dear GOD no. My mother and sister simply devour the stuff somehow; I cannot wrap my head around it.

i distinctly remember the last time i had it. i ordered a "paté" sandwich at a very fancy grocery store in northern california several years ago, thinking it would be something like one of those stupendously delicious sandwiches you'd get in any bar or café in france, and they gave me liverwurst.

no way.

Way!! just the "way" @perkymac said!! so good.

@Nonny next time you head down south bring some extra ;-)

Way, I think. I haven't had it in so long. I used to eat some on toast w/my dad when I was little. We only ever had the Oscar Meyer tube kind, though -- where do you buy it? At deli counters?

Way, way, way...on soft bread with mayo and potato chips smashed into it. Been eating it that way since a kid.

Love liverwurst but steer clear of it most of the time because of the fat content. It's definitely an indulgence.

Love it! White bread or bagel, liverwurst (Thick!), and Zatarain's hot mustard.

When I was little my mom gave me a liverwurst sandwich, but she called it 'old fashioned bologna'. My brothers and I were eating lunch and I went aside to my mom and whispered, "I don't think I like old fashioned bologna, Mom." Now, however, I like it thinly sliced on toasted bread, preferably homemade half whole wheat, with onions, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and mustard.

Has anyone else seen 'The Straight Story'? I think of that whenever I eat liverwurst, and the scene in 'Charades' when the detective offers Audrey Hepburn's character a liverwurst sandwich.

@Luna thanks. I have to buy some braunschweiger and see if I still like it because it has been years since I had it. Liverwurst was always around beause my mother liked it, the last time that I tried a taste of it was about 6 years ago and I had to spit it out.

WAY! ... But only once a year, or even less often.

@PerkyMac & onepercent99 --I love liverwurst and eat it exactly like you both do...EXACTLY! The only thing is, it has to be Boar's Head brand liverwurst-as with any cold cut....Now I'm in the mood for it, maybe I'll run out and get some..See what you did?! ha ha
