Is "unitasker" really a bad word?
I know that AB says the only unitasker he allows in his kitchen is his fire extinguisher, but what do YOU think?
Me, I'm fine with some unitaskers. If something does a task particularly well, and if I use it often enough, I see no problem with having a device that has a single purpose.
This was prompted by that hot chocolate maker thing. I don't need one, but if, for example, I made a hot chocolate for myself every night, I could see the value in putting the ingredients in there and letting it work while I put on my jammies and fuzzy slippers, and having the hot chocolate waiting for me when I wanted it. If I did that every night, it would be a nice indulgence. If I did that once a year, it would be stupid.
I've got dishes that are pretty much single use. One is a ceramic pot that I only use for making tea. In theory, I could serve other beverages from that pot, but I don't. It's not designed as a unitasker, but in my kitchen it is. I've got pepper grinders that hold a specific type of pepper. I could empty them all out and use a hammer to smash peppercorns, but that doesn't seem very user-friendly. In theory, I could have one pepper grinder and load a different pepper in every time I wanted to grind. That doesn't seem useful, either. So my pepper grinders, although they could be used to hold a variety of products and grind them, are in practice, unitaskers.
My coffee burr grinder is only used to grind coffee. My coffeemaker only makes coffee. My toaster is only used to toast bread (and bread-like items).
I have a bunch of decorative bundt pans and a variety of cake, cupcake and bread pans. In theory, I could use them for other things, but in practice, they're unitaskers.
AB once made a point of saying that he doesn't use ceramic pie wieghts because they are unitaskers. So he uses dried beans. But hey, once those beans are used as pie weights, he stores them to use again. As pie weights. They were beans, now they're unitaskers.
Whaddaya think???
