I think the advertising and/or survey layers breaking the site..
...when viewing it on my cellphone using Opera Mini v4.1. The page loads and the main content area is covered in gray boxes, the side columns with Talk etc. are fine. The page is insanely long, with the gray boxes running all the way down. This just started happening yesterday. I hope you can fix it, I check out SE all the time on my phone when out and about.

I agree with simon!

as long as we're at it, the mccormick's ads are insanely annoying. they often prevent me from clicking on the talk topics.
cybercita at 1:20PM on 12/20/08
the other day I kept getting the McCormick ad everytime I clicked on anything on SE!
NanaJoie at 1:26PM on 12/20/08
@simon: are you having trouble with the mobile Serious Eats or the regular Serious Eats using Opera Mini?
Raphael at 1:35PM on 12/20/08
I mentioned the McCormick ad a few days ago. You have to refresh the page or navigate out and back in to get rid of it. Otherwise, it opens a new ad page whenever you click on anything. And it continues to happen if your cursor drifts over it. Supremely annoying.
I occasionally have problems getting the home page to download, and it says doubleclick adclick or some such on the progress line. The ads are necessary, I know, but if they interfere with being able to use the site.....

The McCormick ads are the most problematic. Followed by the Hellman's ads.
izatryt at 1:49PM on 12/20/08
Not having any problems...but I haven't accessed SE from my phone or anything (my phone is majorly basic and I kind of like it that way).
I'm running Firefox with NoScript. That may be why I'm not getting any interference from the McCormick ads.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly about McCormick ads - sometimes I need to refresh the site every time I want to click on something -- anything, otherwise, I just get McCormick every time.

Those f$^%&*%$# McCormack ads!! I will not purchase anything they have to sell. They are just too annoying.
finsbigfan at 2:42PM on 12/20/08
@Raphael - looking at the regular site. The mobile site works fine but I don't like it as much, because you don't include all the content, such as the From Recipes, From Slice, From Hamburger Today etc., and I want it all.

Another annoying thing is that little ball that drops on you to take a dern survey......its as annoying as telemarketers calling my house....
Markbb at 3:53PM on 12/20/08
Those ads have made me hate McCormicks. I find it very frustrating having to refresh my page every time I accidentally drift over the ad.
francie at 4:20PM on 12/20/08
Another vote against those blessed McCormick ads!!!
buffy at 4:29PM on 12/20/08
Ditto with the McCormick ads - but don't they help pay for the site? I am new to SE, but just figured the ads were necessary irritations.
bareneed at 4:56PM on 12/20/08
As long as I can use the site on my phone, they don't bother me. FWIW, I'm pretty sure it's the survey ball thing that's messing things up.
simon at 5:16PM on 12/20/08
We hear you loud and clear re: the McCormick ads. We will get those fixed!
As bareneed has pointed out, McCormick helps pay the bills and makes Serious Eats possible. But they don't intend to interfere with site usability.
Alaina Browne at 5:52PM on 12/20/08
Gotta pay the bills. Site is still not working on my phone. Page loads, then goes gray.
simon at 7:04PM on 12/20/08
I don't know if it was the proximity to the tabs or what but I kept getting this sleigh advertisement drop down when I tried to click on TALK for a while. It doesn't happen anymore but it was confounding when it did. I don't mind the occasional ad or two - most times they don't interfere with SE at all.
chiff0nade at 8:19PM on 12/21/08
What's this survey ball thing? Hmm...maybe the site really would look different if I wasn't running NoScript.
Maybe you guys should try it (if you're using Firefox). It'll disable javascript on a domain basis. So you can allow SE but leave any thing else that has content showing up on SE disabled (ie. leaving the ad company domains disabled).
