@db ~ You never cease to just completely amaze me......
izatryt at 9:41PM on 12/06/08
Oh.
For a minute I thought you were talking about those little cute hot dog breads (shaped like bo luo bao or flowers? yanno?) that I would always get from the local asian market when I was a kid and I got all excited.
Well, of the traditional hot dog, I prefer mine on homemade buns because I egg wash mine to oblivion. I like a slight crust - not the way they come all soft and wimpy from the plastic bag.
jazzinx at 9:44PM on 12/06/08
Holy shit. SPLIT THE BUN DOWN THE TOP. (forehead smack) I've never seen that done, but why, oh, why I never thought of that? I'm always breaking those pre-split buns in two (so annoying) and this solves that problem with stupid stupid stupid ease! My hot doggery has forever changed...
sailordave at 9:59PM on 12/06/08

chicago hot dogs - pickle, tomato, pepper and onion on a side split poppy seed bun...you can order the kits on line.
in grade school we had hotdog day, dirty water dog type with soggy rolls and they tasted ever so good with ketchup. go figure.
Nonny at 11:07AM on 12/07/08
@db ~ The poppy seeds.
izatryt at 12:39PM on 12/07/08
don't give a flying leap what side the cut is on. but grilled with a little butter is the way to go.
dearrie at 12:47PM on 12/07/08
@iz -- I grew up in Chicago, and poppy seeds were just the natural state of a hot dog bun. I couldn't believe it when I moved and there were NO hot dog buns with seeds in any of the stores, an only the rare burger bun with sesame. It still makes me sad to see all those pale naked seedless buns.
dbcurrie at 12:49PM on 12/07/08
I've never seen a hot dog bun with poppy seeds...
carolrsfMISSESTEXAS at 1:38PM on 12/07/08
Those top-split buns with their soft sides brushed with butter and grilled were absolutely unknown in Missouri when I was growing up, except for visits to Howard Johnson's restaurants, where they held hot dogs or the gaspingly exotic fried clams, which is how this once-cowardly eater discovered them. We can't buy 'dog buns with poppy seeds even down Route 66 from Chicago, but the places that cell Chicago-style hot dogs all have them.

@sailordave-- I just had revelation too!! REVELATION.

@Carol, I weep for you.

@sailor ~ Pepperidge Farm!
izatryt at 2:31PM on 12/07/08
@db ~ I know about the rolls from Chicago. The first time I had a Chicago dog, I was in 7th heaven!!!
izatryt at 2:34PM on 12/07/08
A zillion yrs ago when I was a kid and they had this department store with a basement cafe that sold hotdogs that had the grilled buns with butter, loved them. Now I don't care, anything.
pjracz10 at 6:22PM on 12/07/08
Yep split down the top are for lobster rolls. In canada you see poppyseed rolls a lot. It doesn't matter as much the roll here the best part is a local brand Shalen's grilled and only grilled!!!
joanpieroni2 at 6:51PM on 12/07/08
top split
buttered and grilled
never made my own but I'm thinking about it
and grilled onions and hot mustard slaw.
huneybumper at 10:15PM on 12/07/08
No bread
Sliced on the bias and sauteed with sauerkraut
Koskiusco (sp?) mustard
Kerosena at 11:59AM on 12/08/08
I'd like to second joanpieroni..... the method of delivery is not nearly as important as WHAT is being delivered... with slight variations (poppyseeds) most hot dog buns are of the same quality if not style. I grew up eating Essems and find them and Schonlands to be quite tasty. little mustard and kraut or some mustard and onion.... although I have no problem going back to being 5 and eating them with ketchup either.... you so called hot dog purists with ketchup phobias... who smuggly proclaim mustard as the "only" condiment allowed on a hot dog......GET OVER IT!
Pavlov at 1:36PM on 12/08/08
I'd love a bun split down the top (my dog always seems to fall out ) but I don't think So Cal sells them like that, or at least I have never seen them.
If the buns are super-fresh, I like them straight from the bag, if not, I like them steamed.
Pretty much like my dogs plain unless chili is involved. Sometimes when I'm adventerous, I like to add mustard, ketchup and relish to half my dog. I'd love to try true chicago dog just to see what it tastes like but the only thing is, I don't like raw onion. Wonder if it would be sac-relig to order it without onion?!....
ddvierra68 at 2:18PM on 12/08/08
Almost everyone ordering Chicago dawgs has their own favorite combo of the usual. Me, I drop the relish and pickle, and I haven't been thrown out in the last 30 years of visiting up there.
lemons at 2:33PM on 12/08/08
I prefer the New England style top split but can hardly ever find them.
bobbob at 3:10PM on 12/08/08
@ddv, the only thing that might get you sneered at in Chicago, is ordering the dog with ketchup. At least one place I knew out there didn't even have it on the premises, despite the fact they also had fries.
dbcurrie at 6:57PM on 12/08/08
@bobcat i'm from new england and i can't find them either.lol
