Foodie gifts? What did you get?
So???? What good foodie gifts were under the tree?
Anybody planning on shopping the after-Christmas sales on Friday?
I certainly don't need any more holiday decor, but after Christmas, I usually check out some sales and pick up cheap holiday-themed cooking stuff, like the cello bags I used for cookies this year. A couple years ago I picked up some ceramic mini bread pans. Some had hokey Christmas designs, but there were also a solid colors.

I got a charcoal grill - one of the nice barrel sort with cast iron grates. Can't wait to get back home, cure it, and then fire it up. I ordered a custom cutting board and should have it in a couple of weeks.
renoles at 7:56AM on 12/25/08

This was the BEST holiday ever, in the history of holidays. Santa brought a Kitchen Aid standing mixer, a $55 bottle of balsamic vinegar (which I'm so nervous to use!), soy-free chocolate (allergic to soy), and a gift certificate to Williams Sonoma.
WickedGoodDinner at 10:01AM on 12/25/08
For my birthday (just before Christmas) I got a sausage stuffer. Yippee! For Christmas I got a dual wireless thermometer for the smoker. There's a probe to clip at grate level and one for the food. Can't wait to try it out.
NorthernBBQer at 10:54AM on 12/25/08
I got a new mandolin! So exciting. After the traffic of yesterday, I think I'll stay home, drink some wine and not think about the bargains I am missing!
izatryt at 11:40AM on 12/25/08
No more bristly drawers! I got some silicone basting brushes. I also got some covered pyrex measuring cups. And my favorite thing so far, as odd as it may seem, some soup mugs. I love soup, but I'm one of those wandering eaters, so now I can wander outside with my soup easily in hand.
dhorst at 11:44AM on 12/25/08
I got a great gift for Hanukkah (unexpected, too) - a Panasonic bread maker I've wanted for a while! I'm prone to wrist tendonitis in my right wrist (may occur even if I just stir something a bit too vigorously, let alone knead bread), and I don't have a KitchenAid, so for the last couple of years my bread/roll baking solution has been kneading with my hand mixer (which is also not that good for my wrist, but I can't give up on homemade bread and rolls). So now, finally, I've got help! Now I just hope that all great reviews I read about it were true...:-).

I got the Carl Warner print for my kitchen that I asked my husband for (Salmon Seas). It is beautiful. Now I need to frame it and put it up. My boss and her husband got me a santoku and it is awesome. I got them an Alton Brown salt cellar and some silpats--can't wait to find out how she likes them!
buffy at 1:04PM on 12/25/08
I received "The Professional Chef 8th Edition" from the CIA.... forget what I said about not knowing everything when it comes to cooking.... hehe... just kidding... Between this book and "La Rousse Gastronomique" and McGee's Food and Lore I have about 900lbs. of cooking wonderment at my disposal.... but it begs the question.... Do I need to reinforce my floor under the bookshelf?!
Pavlov at 2:21PM on 12/25/08
I squealed so loudly this morning when I opened a sweater-shaped box and found The Book-Lover's Cookbook. Cooking and great books all in one? What more could I want? =)
kfarrel3 at 4:12PM on 12/25/08
It was cooking tome heaven. A day at ElBulli, Alinea, Jamie at home and Dinner at my place. Oh and maybe best of all - Peugeot salt and pepper grinders. Lovely.
katarina_santiago at 4:23PM on 12/25/08
An MRE containing an omelet, which the Marine who gave it to me told me I should never eat.
A copy of the A Fork in the Road cookbook from the PBS series.
A travel coffee mug that plugs into the cigarette lighter port.
And two loaves of exquisite homemade bread from one of Mary's oldest friends.
Need some butter ...
LunaPierCook at 4:48PM on 12/25/08
I got the Top Chef cookbook!
mayoxqueen at 7:09PM on 12/25/08
LunaPierCook.... you should have tried to score an MRE with Potatoes Au Gratin a.k.a. Potatoes Are Rotten.... either that or the Tuna Casserole were both exceptional as long as you can trade for tabasco... Or ham slice with crackers and peanut butter with tabasco.... one damned fine MRE!
Pavlov at 7:18PM on 12/25/08

cybercita at 10:53PM on 12/25/08
@dbcurrie, i just looked at your question again, and you bet. i will be at macy's bright and early tomorrow, with coupons in hand!
cybercita at 10:54PM on 12/25/08
Coupons? Macys? Where did these magical coupons come from?
I'm still trying to decide if I want to bother going out tomorrow or not. I might just curl up with some cookbooks.
But sales are good too....
dbcurrie at 11:10PM on 12/25/08
My friends got me the Williams Sonoma pasta book and marked the pages they want me to cook....it even came with a pasta rake!
another friend got me a KICK ASS pair of kitchen shears (just what every college girl needs for self defense)
veggieout at 11:44PM on 12/25/08
@dbcurrie: in the paper newspapers (which I don't buy, but sometimes have access to from people who do get it delivered) there are usually 20% off coupons for Macys and Lord & Taylor on the east coast--at least that's what I assume to which people are referring! However, they're usually good for more than one day, so you can go to the mall, say on Monday, when people are back to work, if you have time, and don't feel like braving the sales/returns crowds. (The coupons are good on everything, btw, in case you also buy clothes rather than cooking supplies at these stores ;)
My food presents are 'the awesome, the good, and the ugly'
The awesome: A digital camera! In the age of the Internet, being able to take food pictures makes this a food gift!
The good: From my equally Snoopy-mad friend, a little stuffed snoopy in a green elf costume with some Whitman's chocolates. Yeah. not gourmet, but Snoopy's passionate food opinions about pizza, rootbeer, and nasty coconut containing chocolates makes this a great food gift!
The ugly: Sadly, from same said friend--some dog biscuits for my dog that smelled really off--I offered them to her, but she wouldn't eat them, and some citrus fruit for me with mold on the skin. Yeah, I could have peeled them, but I just didn't want to eat them. I feel terrible throwing gifts out, but I can't stand funky smells in my kitchen. I love my friend--she also gave me the Snoopy--but she has lots of people to buy for so often buys from Costco, and sometimes the quality from the warehouse stores (unintentionally) can be hit or miss.
HeartofGlass at 7:41AM on 12/26/08
my boy got me some amazing coffee beans & a new grinder.
my mama got me the book, 'the sharper your knife, the less you cry'.
she also threw in a bunch of silly stocking stuffers like: a spaghetti measure, a 'pie holder' (seriously, it's 2 hinged plastic triangles to keep your fruit from falling out-lol), & a gravy seperator.
although my dear friend, ed, did the best...he & his fiancee made tiny bottles of lemoncello for everyone! plus, homemade raspberry & mint marshmallows, a chocolate bar he designed, a tiny bag of mullling spices & cinnamon sticks for cider, and DIVINE datenut balls.
gastronomeg at 11:00AM on 12/26/08
zingermans/vosges sweet and savory caramels
a book called "Street Food Chicago"
coolname at 12:29PM on 12/26/08
@coolname -- I got that book too! I almost cried when I saw the recipe for Ricobene's steak sandwiches. I can't wait to see if the recipes are close to authentic, but just browsing through it reminded me of all the food that was so easy in Chicago and that is a project to make at home.
dbcurrie at 12:51PM on 12/26/08
Very happy with the booty this year:
- several bags of kakidane -- spicy rice crackers
- a large collector tin of Yoku Moku cookies
- a box of gaufre
- udon from Japan
- blender to make smoothies
- Nikon D60 to take pics of food at restaurants when I have the guts to do it. Realistically, 90% of my pics will end up being of my puppy.
Cassaendra at 2:10PM on 12/26/08
A jar of pickled garlic.
Oh, and a Jenn Air Duel-Fuel range.
(Yes, I look like a jumping bean.)
chiff0nade at 3:01PM on 12/26/08
I got Mark Bittmans How to Cook Everything and a cookbook with gorgeous photos called The Food of Italy.
aungeinphx at 4:38PM on 12/26/08
@Chiff...I love my Jenn Air dual-fuel. I was a jumping bean when I realized the old oven had suicided and it was time to shop for a new one.
Did you get the double-oven model? Is it installed yet? What's cooking?
dbcurrie at 9:15PM on 12/26/08
@dbcurrie, if you have a macy's credit card, they send coupons throughout the year. my favorites are the 20% off ones, but they also have things like spend a hundred bucks and get twenty five bucks off the total.
cybercita at 9:34PM on 12/26/08
I got Alton's I'm Just Here for the Food 2.0, the How to Cook Everything page a day recipe calendar, 2 Vietnamese cookbooks and some cherry tomato seeds for my Aerogarden. I have one more celebration to go to and hope to see at least one more foodie gift since that's mainly what was on my Amazon list and I know my stepmom shopped with the list in hand. Whether she bought from it is another story....doesn't she know we give her lists for a REASON? ;-)
CooksForOne at 10:53PM on 12/26/08
I hit the jackpot - BakeWise and The Secrets of Baking - yahooo!
Also got a box of Enstrom's toffee which was a BIG disappointment - what happened to all the almonds?
Kimc54 at 11:37PM on 12/26/08
I got spoiled: a KitchenAid pasta roller attachment, an Aerogarden and the Alinea cookbook. I can't wait to get going with all 3.
I also got a Silpat, but I think the knockoff I have is good enough, so i might swap it for an immersion blender.
We also treated ourselves to a Breville Ikon juicer last month.
renzata at 12:57AM on 12/27/08
Oh I also got a 14 inch paella/saute pan, which is exciting.
renzata at 1:03AM on 12/27/08
@renzata, that pasta attachment is one of my favorite toys. I don't use it often, but when I do, I end up with bags and bags of filled pastas in the freezer.
One thing I've wanted to try (your aerogarden remineded me of this) is to take parsley or small basil leaves and roll them, whole, between sheets of pasta so you can see the leaves between the layers. What I'd do with it after that, I don't know. I saw a photo of pasta like that and it was really pretty.
Paella pan is nice. I was watching some show about Spain, and they showed a restaurant kitchen and they were using paella pans for all sorts of things. It's a good size and shape for roasting a chicken, for example. So don't put it away and just use it for paella!
dbcurrie at 1:52AM on 12/27/08
I also got a paella pan! With some lovely tapas dishes, a beautiful Moroccan tagine (can't get enough of looking at it and can't wait to cook in it!), a Camilla Panjabi gorgeous cookbook (50 Great Curried of India), a blender, a mortar and pestle and the Hell's Kitchen boardgame! Obviously, they know me quite well but I do have other interests, I swear!
I got my boyfriend a barbeque so I think we're pretty much covered in our future culinary needs!
HappyMuncher at 10:05AM on 12/27/08
What great gifts every one received.
I banned kitchen gifts and all electronics gifts this year! We lack for nothing - in fact, it's time to down size, I think! We're very lucky, I know.
WickedGoodDinner - don't be afraid of the balsamic! My son gave me 30 year old balsamic last year and for six months I was afraid to open it. Of course I opened it around strawberry season which wasn't a bad thing but go for it - it's amazing stuff!
Nonny at 10:49AM on 12/27/08
My husband gave me the Kitchen Aid food grinder attachment I've been wanting for years! We had to borrow his parent's to make venison sausage a few weeks ago, and I think it finally convinced him how great that attachment is!
This week our local grocery has pork loin on sale...I know I'll be trying it out to make some New Year's sausage!
I also received a couple of cookbooks...including the new Bon Appetit one, and some homemade fudge & candy. The fudge came in a very cute mini loaf pan w/poinsettias on it.
mepolo at 1:14PM on 12/27/08
I'm not sure what she was thinking but my mother brought this pasta all the way back from Italy to put in my husband's stocking. Word's can't do it justice.
http://picasaweb.google.com/kathy.tempesta/UnexpectedStockingStuffer#
She also gave him some wild boar spread that looks kind of questionable. I'm not sure what we are going to do with it.
Santa was kind and brought me new hot mitts so I can stop using the ones that no longer have any kind of heat protection except what comes from the colonies of bacteria that have set up permanent residence in them.
KTempesta at 12:22PM on 01/04/09
