Everyone loves _____ but I hate it.

Is there some type of food ot there that everybody you know swears by but that you can't stand? A tried and true classic that has a gross taste that you hate?
Mine: tomato soup. I've tried several different commercial brands as well as home and restaurant made but never found one I liked. Not even with the world's best grilled cheese sandwich.
What about y'all?

99 Comments:

i hate tomato soup. but i eat tomatoes almost everyday. in my house the guys love fried bologna sandwiches. i don't get it. the smell alone is enough to gag me.

I mentioned tomato soup in another thread.

But I have two big ones. Onions. I like the flavor in a lot of things, but I hate the texture, and I had a burger the other day that was ruined byt the addition of too much onion. The other one is salad dressing. Can't stand any of the thick and creamy stuff, it makes me very nauseous, and most of the oil and vinegar ones taste too much like vinegar, so I can't eat those either. Luckily, I like the taste of an undressed salad.

Turkey
Rice
Lima beans

SUSHI! I just don't get it!

Salmon. In all its icky guises.

Oh, poor Izzy, you don't like rice? What about it don't you like?

Arugula. I'm fine with it in small doses mixed with a lot of other salad greens, but I couldn't stand to eat a whole salad of arugula. Mostly it's the smell that turns me off.

Chicken liver. Ok, not everyone loves chicken liver.

@iz--lima beans...I thought everyone hated those little green turdlets...

Arugula - It just tastes musty to me.

Figs - I feel like most 'foodies' like them, but I give them a shot every so often and am always sorry I did.

*Beets. So many people seem to absolutely love them, but I absolutely cannot stand them.

*Most cooked fish - not as fish fingers, not as fish and chips, not steamed, broiled or baked. Smoked and cured is fine however, as is raw in sushi (it kind of gets a quick "cure" when you dip it in soy sauce though).

I'm certain I have more, but I'm drawing a blank again...

Oh, and any dried or cooked or candied fruit/berries - raisins, craisins, cherries, apricots, prunes, you name it.

Peanut butter and chocolate combinations. Or pretty much any dessert that has peanut butter.

I love PB in other non-dessert roles, but I hate it with dessert and especially if it's fouling up some chocolate. Reese's can suck it. :(

Caesar cocktails/blood mary, no thanks.

@dbcurrie--I'm with you on arugula.

Reese's peanut butter cups.

Mayo is the most disgusting substance ever developed.

Salmon (seafood in general, actually)
Ketchup, and mustard
Sausage
Milk (I'll use it in cereal, and in hot sweetened drinks like Cappuccinos...but never alone!!)
Caesar Dressing
Cantaloupe
Mayo
Oh, the list goes on...I really didn't think I was this picky. Apparently I was wrong

cucumbers and pickles

Its so funny to see most of my "no- nevers" on all of your lists! You can still love food and love to cook but not love every food out there.

Mayo (and most condiments)
Salmon
Tomato juice/soup/bloody mary type drinks
Lima beans, garbanzo beans, brussel sprouts
Any organ or other random meat items
Too many more to list.......always more gourmet than gourmand! :)

Mayo for me too, and prepared mustard.

Sushi and crabcakes.
gak

Mayonnaise.

Cheese on my sandwiches/burgers/most pizzas.

HFCS - haha :P (Sorta a joke...but really not ._.)

Peanut butter
Watercress
Tarragon
Bananas

Grapefruit : (

Wow, so many hatin' on the mayo...I heart mayo...

@luswim--damn. You win.

Also - bananas and melons (other than water melon). I strongly dislike even the smell of either one.

cantaloupe.... the smell makes me sick.

oh god! cantaloupe too! YUCK!

fast food anything. except for pizza. and french fries.

Turkey, esp. day old. It stinks. Creamed celery. Sushi.

Mayo
Pickles (although I love other things that are pickled - kim chi, anyone?)
Oranges (again, though, I love anything that tastes like it - it's a texture thing)

Peas, and eggs as well. Never have, and I never will be able to eat them.

peanut butter and jelly. i can take them individually, but together they are the world's most evil combination.

sun-dried tomatoes,

although i LOOOVE tomatoes in every other form.

Oh my, so much hate. Hmm, I honestly can't think of A SINGLE THING that I hate. Other than dead flesh(meat) because I am vegetarian, I like all other food items that I have tried so far. And I'm a pretty adventurous eater, so I've eaten plenty of different things.

Will not eat a dish at all if it touches:
cilantro
onions -- raw, definitely; totally stewed, tolerated
garlic bits, chunks, cloves
horseradish
vinegary stuff

I will not eat, but can pick around:
watercress
beef, pork, poultry fat and poultry skin (gag)
turkey

There's more, but that's all I can think of right now...

Eggs other than hard-boiled (I know, opposite of most people)
Olives
Apple pie (and almost all cooked fruit as I have mentioned repeatedly, hehehe, but I wouldn't say "everyone loves cooked fruit" in general)

I can not stand a medium rare petite filet, aged to perfection, turns my stomach.

raw tomatoes
lima beans
canned vegetables
jarred gravy
fat on any meat, gristle, chicken skin
dark poultry meat
watermelon
squash
fresh water fish

@welred--olives is high on my list also. I don't understand the olivophiles. They aren't good at all plain, but I can tolerate them on pizza, etc.

Salmon onion melon mayo salad sandwich, anyone?

OMG dave, thank you. My diet is saved, thanks to you ruining my appetite! ^_^

Melon, any kind - watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew...ick. Same thing with mango, papaya.

mayo - i can only eat it on subway sandwiches. maybe its their brand, maybe its in my head, but its the only kind i can eat and not gag.

peanut butter - i think its the texture. i love it in candy and cookies, but pb&j always grossed me out

beans - i hate all beans, except green beans. again - its a texture thing. i hate them.

@sailordave- thank you for defending my favorite condiment :)

I cant really think of anything I absolutle cannot stand to eat...maybe pickled beets.

Goat cheese. I have tried even the mildest, still it wants to exit my mouth almost immediately.

@listener I used to have that issue, then I don't know what changed, but all of a sudden I love them in everything. Chili? Check! Black beans and rice? Yup! Red beans and rice? OOOH!

I really don't know why, but there you have it. Still not a huge fan of peas, lima beans, or hummus, but I can stomach them.

Dill
Mayo that's not homemade
Salad
Eggs

Cottage cheese ewwww
Asparagus
Kidney beans
Most sushi I tried it all over and it is not my thing
lima beans
cooked berries
fresh berries except strawberries
offal meats
Tuna raw or cooked
marjoram
filbert nuts
sesame seeds
raw carrots
diet soda
oregano on chicken
arugula
field peas
tangerines
white gravy on any part of my breakfast and SOS
whipped cream
scrapple
potted meat product
beef ravioli, tortellini (any pasta with meat filling)
Pina Colada (hate coconut and pineapple together)

Cilantro
Chicken Breast

Raw carrots
Celery sticks
Peanut butter
Celery sticks with peanut butter (ants on a log = barf)
Chocolate
Peanut butter and chocolate
Peanut butter and jelly

...And yet, I occasionally will eat and enjoy a homemade peanut butter cookie. Go figure.

The presence of anything creamy in savoury dishes (creamy or dairy in sweets is acceptable): cream-of-anything soups, creamy sauces, etc. These things always make me think of something unspeakably vile, and since I know many of you no doubt like that sort of thing, I won't elaborate. But my reaction is strong enough that, if I am forced to eat something of this sort, I may be sick at table. Awful.

Anything in a white sauce (including fettuccine alfredo, white pizza, and macaroni and cheese).

Pasta

Whipped potatoes (again, the dislike of plain, creamy, heavy white foods)

Fruit-flavored ice creams and sorbets

Whipped cream (there are many photos of me eating out spooning the stuff off of parfaits before I tucked in!)

Jell-O (although I have trouble understanding how any person can like this stuff!)

TURKEY--ick!

There are other things like fast food and sugary cereals, but growing up I used to love these with wild abandon, so I can remember what it was like to eat these things even though my palate and body reject them now. Ditto with meat--I did eat meat as a child, and liked some kinds. The above list--never liked.

Beets, any melons, ketchup, tomato soup.

turkey
lobster
mayo(except homemade aiole)
spaghettios
most "cream based" sauces
most breakfast style eggs(will eat one on Rare occasions)
commercial ketchup(homemade is tolerable)
mango anything
cilantro
raw onions (love them cooked)
wow I didnt realize I was that picky.

Cilantro. Tastes like I put a bar of Ivory in my mouth.

Oh, I forgot, Southern Comfort and Captain Morgan's. And no it was not do to an over indulgence poisoning. Just, as with beets and melons, happens to produce a shuddering, oh my, am I going to boot? response.

It's a whole army of us cilantro-haters! Definetely to do with an enzyme, as mentioned on a different thread specifically about this herb...I also cannot stand beets, horseradish and cucumber (but I'm not sure EVERYBODY loves them, though)

One thing everybody seems to go nuts about is ice-cream and although I don't dislike it, it is nothing special to me and I would probably have it once a year. Even when it's boiling hot, I would much rather have a chocolate or dulce de leche dessert rather than ice cream any day...

One thing adored by most Brits are baked beans which I find evil and horrid. The smell they give off whilst being heated (by my boyfriend who is an absolute addict) makes my stomach turn and weep.

Goat cheese. I keep trying it, and everytime, I swear it tastes like a barn smells, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why people eat the stuff.

raw carrots, salmon, beets, raw garlic

Any meat stuffed with meat - i.e. chicken cordon bleu
Cilantro
Sandwiches/subs with tons of different cold cuts
Revolting fresh tuna steaks that look raw on FNTV - it looks like someone chainsawed through a human thigh!

Feta, candied nuts of any kind. My sister has a salad with both that she makes for every holiday and everyone raves. I can't stand it.
Coffee. Love the smell, hate the taste. The worst joke anyone ever played on me was to give me a chocolate covered coffee bean saying it was a chocolate covered peanut. Without even thinking, I gagged and spit it on the floor in the middle of the restaurant we were working. Not pretty and it took forever to get the taste out of my mouth.

@towl ~ I don't like the texture or the taste. Rice reminds me of larvae.
@sailor ~ I am happy to know I am not alone!

nutmeg
goat cheese
oysters

I thought of one this morning making breakfast - runny egg yolks. Bleck.

I guess I'm weird, because there really isn't anything I dislike. The things I won't eat are obvious and probably shared by most people
Linberger cheese
kidneys
brains
bugs
Things along those lines....
(I watch too much Andrew Zimmern)

I just got off the phone with my BFF who is making Christmas dinner. She is planning her menu to accommodate: Celiacs (gluten free), Vegan, Vegetarians, Raw Foods only, Allergy to wheat, dairy, soy, corn, onions & garlic, plus 3 super, super picky eaters. There are 10 people eating and the majority eat meat. I've lost track of the number of sides she is making in order to have a wonderful meal for every guest at her table. I honestly don't know how she does it and keeps sane. I eat everything, without complaint. She doesn't know I'm not crazy about gluten free desserts and ricotta. And I hope she never finds out. The allergic one and raw foods belong to me and I'll be bringing food for them, too. ;-D

Cooked fish, save the occasional salmon filet. I love sashimi and sushi, but just can't stand the texture and flavor of cooked fish (canned tuna especially).
Raw onions. I love cooked onions, but can't stomach raw ones.
Zucchini and summer squash - I tried them (again) this summer and couldn't get past the texture.

@perk--Holy shit. Yr friend should just call it a potluck. What's on the menu? Water?

I would not make that many accommodations but would instead ask my selective eaters to bring a dish they could eat. Then I would sit and watch the fun as the celiacs and the vegans went at it. Throw down Christmas.

Cheese, chocolate, and coffee. The three Cs.

@Jerzee ~ LOL on that one!!

Margarita's; love the tequila, hate (okay, strongly dislike) the "mix" or even the fresh made ones. Can we please have a new cool mexican libation. Sadly, Mojitos are going in the same directions.....

@sailordave ~ gee, I hope water isn't on the menu. I'm allergic to it. ;(
haha

Seriously though, she's talking about fruit and veggie dishes where so and so can pick out the raisins and another can pick out the grapes and beets, 'cause they just don't like them, but they're not allergic. I'm bringing roasted root vegs and making sure they are recognizable, so another so and so can remove what they don't like. I don't think there is one dish that everyone can and will eat. I don't have that kind of patience, except for people who have a genuine medical condition which precludes some foods. I cook what I cook and they eat it or not. My little bro insisted that his young son eat a piece of fruit from a fruit salad one time and my nephew was gagging and crying. Talk about making everyone uncomfortable. Must be someplace in the middle to please people you love and want to be with on holidays. Make them eat at home first might be a start.

Any kind of RAW tomatos
Foie gras or anything else pate or spread except i will eat Braunschweiger.
Beets anything
Most olives
Most fish except when made into sushi , tuna orcrab salads, cakes or smoked or kippired (sp), pickled herring, and a certain brand of sardines, plus I like to put the tiny smoked oysters on top of pizza
Most shell fish I hate, but I do like scallops, crab, crawfish, langostins, shrimp, lobster and oysters in my private reserve stuffing.

Hmm...could have sworn I posted this a few hours ago, but apparently not.

  • Ketchup. Malcolm Gladwell wrote a column in which ketchup, specifically Heinz, is praised as "a condiment that pushed all five of [the] primal buttons [bitter, sweet, sour, salty and umami]." But it's too damn sweet. Anything that sweet/salty/sour needs garlic! And lots of it! That's why I could eat spoonfuls of barbecue sauce all day long.
  • Miracle Whip, for the same reason. Sugar is a terrible thing to do to mayonnaise. A while ago, I found a "mayo vs. Miracle Whip" thread at eGullet.org which included links to recipes for homemade Miracle Whip. Dry mustard, paprika, and garlic powder? Yes, please. Sugar? Leave it out!
  • Mimosa cocktails. Fresh-squeezed orange juice? Yes! Champagne? Certainly! But not in the same glass!
  • Lime – with sugar. Lime candy, limeade, maybe even Key Lime Pie – abominations all. But lime in savory dishes – no problem at all.
  • Velveeta. Not even in mac-n-cheese. I've always made mine with a bechamel with about half a pound of sharp cheddar stirred into it.
  • Oscar Meyer hot dogs. They taste raw no matter how long you cook them.
  • And Saag's garlic sausage always tastes rancid even if it's right off the production line. But I love just about all other brands of garlic sausage.
-

Steamed/boiled lobster, served plain (I will eat it in bisque, or as a lobster roll).
Mussels (they taste like metal to me).
Any sort of smoked shellfish.
Macademia nuts.
Raisins.

Any sort of warmed tuna...like a tuna melt, or tuna noodle (barf) casserole, or even the fancy-pants "seared tuna on a bed of micro greens"....BLECH. Tuna, in my opinion, should be cold, mixed with pickles/onions/celery and, (hold onto your belts) Miracle Whip and put on bread..I also can tolerate it raw, as in sushi or sashimi.. it should NOT be warmed up. Too much like cat food then.

Sour cream - even the smell makes me gag
Cottage cheese / cream cheese - it's a texture thing
Liver in any and all forms - hate taste, smell and texture gag!
Oysters - again texture
Soft goat cheeses - texture
Oatmeal and other cooked cereals - slimey texture (ok in other things)
Milk to drink - hate aftertaste, even chocolate milk
Raw onions - texture again (like smell and a hint of flavor)
Raw green peppers - tastes metallic to me
Brussell sprouts cooked plain - ok if sauteed with lots of bacon and lime juice

I don't know if *everyone* loves it, but in my Eastern European background it's very traditional: chicken liver. I can't be in the same room with it.

And I wouldn't go so far as to use the word "hate," but I don't much care for potatoes. I'll eat a baked potato maybe once a year, or a fry or two. But I don't care for potato chips, home fries, mashed potatoes, etc. Don't cook them, never order them out. You know that old ad for Lay's potato chips, "no one can eat just 1"? I can. (Sweet potatoes are a different story...!)

Rice dishes- rice with sauce or stuff mixed in- risotto, paella, chicken rice casserole etc.

I like almost all of the elements of paella (except saffron), but as I've said before, the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Also, plain rice is fine, and though it's not my first choice, fried rice is ok too.

Ranch dressing.

Oh god, I got a little gaggy just typing that out.

Brazil nuts and macadamia nuts. To me they always taste rancid. But since they come from thousands of miles away, they may very well be rancid by the time I get them.

tomatoes any and all types including ketchup, soup and pasta sauce
mustard-unless i'm preggers the smell alone makes me sick when i am preggers i like it! I can scare my hubby by asking for mustard(ha :))
any and all organ meats ohh full body shudder!!!

White-meat chicken. No matter how well its made it tastes like cardboard to me and doesn't seem to serve a purpose. I love dark meat! This probably doesn't qualify as a "hate", though I've been known to push it to the other side of my plate. Or feed it to the cat.

Other than that, really there isn't much I won't eat, other than the obvious things like brains, bugs, snouts, and the like (as soozm32 stated--just about anything Andrew Zimmerman would relish :) And I don't think those count as things "everyone loves.."!

Hmmm Lets see

Sushi
Seafood in General
Mushrooms
Green Peas

pecans
apple juice
anchovies
anything grape flavored, but I love grapes

Tomatoes other than as a sauce.

Green Bell Peppers are Satan's peppers. Give my any other kind, and I'm great and happy. You know where you can stick your Green Bell Peppers....

Raw Tomatoes. I just never got a taste for them. As an adult, I've tried fresh off the vine little ones, heirloom crazy-looking ones, and farmer's market ones. Just don't like 'em.

Deep-fried food. I can take the occasional french fry, but keep your Fry-Daddy to yourself for the most part, mmmkay?

Mango. I really dislike a lot of tropical fruits, they just taste bitter to me, don't know why.

Oh, and I'm with everyone else re: Andrew Zimmern food. Love the show, but yuck!!!

lo82070, I'm with you on the green bell peppers. Cripes, let 'em turn red, or even orange or yellow, before you pick 'em.

The other stuff on your list, why, I'll be glad to take it off your hands.

I'm beginning to think that I'm the only one who hates honey...

CORN, POTATOES, CARROTS & SOMETIMES CELERY!
Oh and I HATEEEEE Papaya and Mango!

Papaya
Cream sauces
Raw Tomatoes
Soda of any kind

I won't eat chocolate cake, chocolate ice cream, most chocolate candy bars, chocolate chips in cookies/mint ice cream
I can eat milk chocolate Reese's are awesome but I have to eat drink milk to get rid of the aftertaste.
Olives (green and black)
licorice (Any flavor)
Steak, Turkey, Lamb Chops. Really any meat except seafood, chicken, ham and beef.
I actually hate pizza without ranch dressing.
