Cream of Wheat: Way or No Way?
I had a couple of new boxes here and couldn't give them away. Nobody wanted it. Everyone said they hated it. I have to watch my wheat consumption - a little doesn't bother me. I'm not crazy about the taste or texture, so for me, it's no way. I'm wondering if anybody actually likes cream of wheat?
Are you way or no way?

Wow! I haven't thought of cream of wheat in 50 yrs!!! Ate it all the time as a kid, I'll have to try it again.
NanaJoie at 8:50AM on 12/16/08
No way.
dhorst at 8:52AM on 12/16/08
oh helllllllllllll no
Southern_bella at 8:55AM on 12/16/08
I love cream of wheat...my grandmother use to make it for me all the time when I was little. Even when I head back for a visit, she still makes it for me. :-)
I always make it with milk instead of water, and add some honey to sweeten it up. You could even add some dried fruit, like cranberries. Perfect for a cold winter morning.
jmfors at 8:55AM on 12/16/08
Love Cream of Wheat, Oatmeal, Malt-O-Meal, you name it. I can't eat cold food when it's cold outside (thus my aversion to salads all winter) so on cold days, cold cereal is out of the question.
therealchiffonade at 8:56AM on 12/16/08
Oatmeal, please.
Oatmeal is also more nutritious: but the main reason I don't eat it is that it looks and tastes like baby food.
HeartofGlass at 9:06AM on 12/16/08
NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!
izatryt at 9:08AM on 12/16/08
CoW with honey is morning comfort food.
finsbigfan at 9:16AM on 12/16/08
Got pretty much burnt out as a kid.....don't like it
Markbb at 9:38AM on 12/16/08
I never would eat Cream of Wheat as a child, because the look of it bothered me, but when I went to Girl Scout camp, it was served regularly. I tried it because the other girls seemed to like it, and I found that I did as well. It's great with brown sugar, or honey. You could jazz it up with nuts and dried fruit as well.
Mares at 9:42AM on 12/16/08
love it - but only made on the stovetop with water. salt is key.
emlod10 at 9:47AM on 12/16/08
OMG!!! WAYYYYYY!!!!!!!! Cream of Wheat is my all time go-to comfort food....when I'm sick, it's the perfect remedy...all warm and cozy. My Nanny and Papa used to make it for me every morning when I was little...and it would be runny and milky and sweet. So comforting.
And yes, I agree with @emlod10, salt is key!
juliebugsmama at 10:14AM on 12/16/08
WAY!!!!!!!! I prefer it to oatmeal any day. Love it with cold milk.
MadelynRodriguez at 10:25AM on 12/16/08
Way! Cooked with milk, not water, and fresh strawberries on top.
buffy at 10:45AM on 12/16/08
Haven't had it in about 100 years, and prefer oatmeal -- but if that's what you're serving for breakfast, I'll have a bowl! (With honey or maple syrup, please.)
CookiePie at 10:51AM on 12/16/08
If I had to choose between oatmeal and Cream of Wheat for my daily breakfast, I would go for oatmeal only because it is more filling. However, Cream of Wheat would be my choice if I were sick. It brrings back fond memories of my childhood. Whenever I was sick, my mother would whip up a pot of cream of wheat with some sugar, butter, milk, and an egg. The taste reminded me of rice pudding or tapioca pudding. So yummy, custardy, and comforting. If I ever had a sore throat, she would add extra milk to make the Cream of Wheat thin enough to sip through one of those flexible bendy straws. Can't look at a flexible bendy straw without thinking about Mom and her Cream of Wheat.
Esmeralda at 10:54AM on 12/16/08
Way! With water, about one grain of salt and 3 grains of sugar.
Kerosena at 11:06AM on 12/16/08
Absolutely no way!!!!
brooke29 at 11:13AM on 12/16/08
When it is made JUST right then it is the perfect cold weather hot food! But, no way on the lumps or slimy!
antri at 11:17AM on 12/16/08
Mmmm...way. I like mine with half milk, half water, with brown sugar and raisins...
I especially like it at this time of year, warms you from the inside out.
mayoxqueen at 11:19AM on 12/16/08
I love cream of wheat, and I actually try to make it lumpy like my mom did. It's yummy with maple syrup and a bit of brown sugar. When my boyfriend was in the hospital recently, the cream of wheat was the only thing he would eat because it was the only thing they didn't manage to make disgusting.
faycat at 11:28AM on 12/16/08
MMMMMMMM I loooove it!! I prefer it for an afternoon snack versus breakfast, mostly because the fiber content is low and I prefer something more fiber-y for breakfast. But, it's also great mixed with oatmeal to make it even more creamy. I take a pack of oatmeal and cook that, then add a tablespoon of CoW, tbsp ground flax, 1/2 cup milk, cinnamon and 1/2 cup pumpkin---stir into oatmeal and then cook again until warm. Add 1-2 splenda and you have delicious Pumpkin Oats!! (CoW plain though is still awesome :) )
luswim06 at 11:29AM on 12/16/08
I'd rather have grits, but I'll eat Cream of Wheat if that's what's available.
Amandarama at 11:47AM on 12/16/08
*mumbles through a mouthful of said Cream of Wheat* Way! Now stop spying on me making breakfast when you post this stuff... O_O
feriorrenna at 12:08PM on 12/16/08
I love cream O' wheat but not the instant only the stuff you cook and then it needs to be cooked with milk and a little butter. SIL used to make it occasionally as a hangover cure for me it really worked to.
huneybumper at 12:53PM on 12/16/08
I think it's utterly delicious, made with milk and pinch of salt. I didn't grow up with it--had it for the first time a few months ago. I like to add honey and sliced bananas, or the occasional handful of dried cranberries. So...WAY!
Michele Humes at 1:02PM on 12/16/08
I love it with butter and sugar, but I haven't had it since the late '80s....now I'm having a craving!
KateRuby at 1:12PM on 12/16/08
Way!
mepolo at 1:13PM on 12/16/08
ch-yeah! I love cream of wheat!
One of my favorite ways to eat it was when it got cold it solidified and I'd drizzle some honey over it...yum!
decemberain27 at 1:47PM on 12/16/08
I prefer grit over cream of wheat because the texture is kind of weird to me (unless there are intentional lumps in it!). I want to try making cream of wheat like cornmeal mush, refrigerating it overnight, and frying a chunk the next day and pouring syrup on top.
ChristinaINP at 1:50PM on 12/16/08
I'm totally a "way!" on cream of wheat. I'd choose it over oatmeal any day.

Love these "Way or no way" questions!
Chew on That at 2:29PM on 12/16/08
I LOVE cream of wheat (second only to Chocolate Malt-O-Meal and Co-Co Wheats).
What's really good is cream of wheat pudding served on a warm fruit compote. I also have a nice farina dumpling recipe that I used for warm fruit compotes too, from a German compote.
elderberry44 at 2:51PM on 12/16/08
As a child, I wouldn't touch the stuff (and I always hated those annoting Maypo commercials), but as an [older] adult I have to say that I've come around to enjoying it. And grits as well, believe it or not! So I vote *WAY* @ this one, with the stipulation that it must be made w/ milk rather than water.
As a sidenote, I was quite surprised that C@W only has *one* gram of dietary fiber per serving! :-{
Robbo at 3:35PM on 12/16/08
Way! I love it with some dried fruits and nuts, a little good honey, and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Or with cheese and crumbled sausage. Or bananas, pecans, and vanilla. Or just plain with brown sugar. Couldn't get enough of it as a kid, and I still love it as adult.
jenilowrance at 3:40PM on 12/16/08
Growing up, it was a staple. But I haven't eaten it in years. I do have some pleasant nostalgic memories of Cream of Wheat. When I was a child, we lived in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, but used to go to Syracuse every summer to visit my grandmother. We used to take the train. In those days, it meant a long stop-over in Montreal. I remember we went to the restaurant in the train station in Montreal for breakfast. Even though I was about 8 years old at the time (I'm a grandmother myself, now), I can still taste that comforting food. I remember it was very creamy, smooth and loose (as opposed to thick and lumpy, the way I've sometimes had it .
Ah, sweet memories of a more innocent time.
SavtaShayna at 3:45PM on 12/16/08
very much way.
jcmeloni at 3:46PM on 12/16/08
Way, big time way.
stacemace at 3:47PM on 12/16/08
i'm a huge fan of cream of wheat AND cocoa wheat, cocoa wheat, cant be beat... i think it is more of a comfort thing that actually being something REALLY tasty, but when i'm a little down in the dumps it makes my belly happy...
hungrygrl7 at 5:00PM on 12/16/08
Ewww.... NO WAY for me. I've always loved oatmeal, and just come to terms with the awesomeness of grits, but cream of whet makes me want to hurl. The texture is sickening and the taste is blah and.... eesh.
nightowl at 5:04PM on 12/16/08
WAY! I love cream of wheat - especially the Nabisco kind in the red box. The bulk version is not as good. Cooked in half water half milk with a pinch of salt, with brown sugar and more milk stirred in at the end. Not lumpy! I really dislike oatmeal porridge, so lumpy...
PeanutButter at 5:34PM on 12/16/08
LLLLOVE the stuff. But I Doctor it up like everything else. I have to put butter, brown sugar, a tad bit of milk and LOTS of choc chips in them, it is wonderful.
pjracz10 at 5:54PM on 12/16/08
oddly I've never tasted it...so I can't say! But I have a feeling I wouldn't like it. I only tolerate oatmeal because it is good for you.
jinx35 at 6:20PM on 12/16/08
WAAAAAAAAAAY!*
*I love Cream of Wheat and/or Malt-O-Meal at all times of the year, but my opinion today might be influenced by the fact that Cream of Wheat is in season.
pearl at 6:30PM on 12/16/08
No way.
Yuck.
sadiepix at 6:36PM on 12/16/08
You don't life in the south, do you?
That stuff is like awesomeness times a million. it's probably fifth in line for our signature breakfast dish.
(i think the order is something like if Grits, Biscuits and Gravy, cured ham and hash browns get assassinated or die in office, it takes the presidency)
rasellers0 at 7:09PM on 12/16/08
I haven't had Cream of Wheat in a long time. I used to love it with butter, brown sugar, a little salt and cinnamon. Mmmm...
gammypie at 11:25AM on 12/17/08
way! or maybe i mean "whey!" because it's lovely with milk. and sugar and cinnamon, of course!

**WAY!**
I'm with gammypie--browned butter with brown sugar and a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. nom nom nom
hungrychristel at 1:18PM on 12/17/08
@hungrychristel ~ I'm getting my *Way* or.... ?s mixed up. I read your response thinking this was the horseradish? and thought ewwwww. ;-)
PerkyMac at 1:24PM on 12/17/08
yum, I like it. When I was a sick little girl my mom would make it with chicken broth to make me feel better. It worked :)
rockymountainmarta at 2:29PM on 12/17/08
@perky - Yeah there's lots of "way or no way" topics today--I could see the same thing happening to me :D
hungrychristel at 2:53PM on 12/17/08
With brown sugar, butter, and milk? WAY!
aharste at 2:57PM on 12/17/08
*Way*
RedVelvetBoba at 3:29PM on 12/17/08
Faycat, I totally agree. I actually love the lumpiness and purposelly try not to mix too much while I'm cooking. WAY!
Emsev333 at 3:48PM on 12/17/08
WAY!!!!!!
In any way.
Especially with lumps, those delicious chewey nuggets.
Or in the form of idly, the south Indian steamed bread/dumpling.
It's quite versatile, it's basically like polenta, I don't understand all the noways.
casalee at 3:51PM on 12/17/08
way...eat 'em like grits with butter, s&p and a dash of cholula hot sauce. yum.
sugaree402 at 4:57PM on 12/17/08
So many great add-ons suggested. Maybe I should give them another try. I love oatmeal and grits (not together!).
PerkyMac at 5:13PM on 12/17/08
@sugar - hot sauce? hey I'd try that! I've had it with Salsa!
@perky - maybe I would like to try it with some marmalade maybe (raspberry or orange)? Add some flax seed in there and some crasins! I think if I ever tried 'grits' that's how I'd try them too
hungrychristel at 5:59PM on 12/17/08
@hungrychristel ~ I like grits prepared more like mashed potatoes, pat of butter and a little cream, s&p. I put brown sugar or maple syrup and milk on my oatmeal and I'd probably do the same with cream of wheat.
PerkyMac at 6:32PM on 12/17/08
Way!! Little lumps are a bonus!
RossS at 7:23PM on 12/17/08
@rockymountainmarta - Yum, CoW made with chicken broth! Sounds like it would be a perfect way to feed a fever. Reminds me of arroz caldo which is a Filipino rice porriage made with chicken, onions, garlic, and sliced ginger. Must try that with CoW.
Esmeralda at 8:13PM on 12/17/08
WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
dobbsgirl at 8:17PM on 12/17/08
made with milk & vanilla sugar....YES!
kathyvegas at 8:20PM on 12/17/08
TOTALLY!
I love it a couple ways...
1) regular texture (not too runny, not too dry) with milk and sugar
2) creamier texture with lumps (not the lumps that have uncooked grains it...you have to do it just right)
4) or hot and soupy when I'm feeling sick and icky and just want something to go down nice and easy...
jami52 at 8:31PM on 12/17/08
WAY!! I love it a little thick and eat with runny eggs like you would grits.
pamelakrest at 9:03PM on 12/17/08
way!! it's delicious with salted butter and brown sugar...
annaliesenc at 9:12PM on 12/17/08
WAY!!! Cream of wheat is sexy...especially when it gets chewy lumps in it. I'm a total mushy food fan, though. The gene that gives me a love of porridge will totally get me through this recession.
Soigne at 9:27PM on 12/17/08
I like it lumpy so I make it in the microwave. There is a local mill here that makes their own version called germade. I get the strawberries and cream flavor. I think I'll have it this morning!
Heatherdee at 10:21AM on 12/18/08
definately way - with some sliced banana and honey drizzled over.....yum.
deliciousnyc at 1:39PM on 12/18/08
Way...my husband is the one that really loves it though. He's 1/2 Dutch, and we found a Dutch variety called "Brinta" that according to the directions is supposed to be served VERY runny, almost like how they tell you to do baby cereal at first. We gave up on that and make it using CoW proportions so it actually mounds in a spoon. =)
akk328 at 1:49PM on 12/18/08
Way, must be lumpy.
sfolio at 3:19PM on 12/18/08
Many of you reminded me of the lumps in them (it's been a long time) but I loved those lumps and I have to go out and buy some now along with choc chips because it is cold and snowing and that is when I remember it most.
pjracz10 at 3:47PM on 12/18/08
EPIC way.
jeninewsbite at 4:47PM on 12/18/08
Cream of Wheat is one of the only foods I brought to France with me. I have a box of that and a box of Oats in my room. I love them both.
meg3j at 4:48PM on 12/18/08
of course!! i prefer coco wheat tho :)
listener at 6:24PM on 12/18/08
Love it with cream and brown sugar. Delicious!
jodangerously at 8:32PM on 12/18/08
Oh heck yeah, all the flavors, but gots to have the salt, baby!
And don't even get me started on Coco wheats-mmhm, slap yo' momma!
And stop comparing it to oatmeal, no comparison at all. And sugaree, what's up with the hot sauce? Am I missing out?
msveemommi3 at 8:53PM on 12/18/08
no way
dearrie at 8:56PM on 12/18/08
Wow, with all the lovers, I've begun to think that I may be missing out:-)
brooke29 at 8:59PM on 12/18/08
Absolutely 100% WAY! But only with butter and cheese. I've never had it with anything sweet.
iheartny22 at 10:47PM on 12/18/08
No for me, but my husband loves it, with butter and brown sugar on top.

I never dreamed so many people would have an opinion on Cream of Wheat. There are so many passionate lovers (haha) that I'm going to have to give it another try - sweet and savory.
If you haven't responded yet, please do? We'd all love to see the true concensus of opinion.
PerkyMac at 12:45PM on 12/19/08
WAY!!! With butter and brown sugar. Now I have to go to the grocery store to calm my retro-craving!
kwhit at 2:05PM on 12/19/08
WAY.
neojess at 9:07PM on 12/19/08
Way! Cream of wheat is so comforting to eat, I just love the texture. I eat it plain, cooked in water and topped with vanilla soymilk.
jo_wang at 9:28PM on 12/19/08
gosh, i don't think i've ever tried it. but i would probably like it.
however, i eat a lot of oatmeal in the winter, the old fashioned kind, and i wouldn't replace it with cream of wheat, because i eat a lot of wheat in other forms.
so that's a way and a no way. i think i cancelled myself out!
cybercita at 9:59PM on 12/19/08
Wow, who knew cream of wheat could be such a polarizing (and popular) topic?!
nightowl at 10:17PM on 12/19/08
my first "no way"
blizcheetah at 10:53PM on 12/19/08
Wow, it's been years since I've had Cream of Wheat... I used to like it, so I assume my answer would still be "way". I'll have to try it again and see if my answer changes...
Steen at 1:40AM on 12/20/08
I'll vote WAY. In fact right now I have Cream of Wheat, Malt O Meal, AND Oatmeal in the pantry and in cold weather have one of each every week. The first two are good with or w/o lumps, but must have brown sugar, butter, 2 % milk, and golden raisins. Mmmmm . . .
gourmetgal at 3:05AM on 12/20/08
Way, yum, but I like almost any hot cereal!
anyang at 9:57AM on 12/21/08

This is #100 comment on Cream of Wheat.
Cream of Wheat, for gosh sakes.
Who woulda thunk it?
Wow!
And, it doesn't even seem to be controversial.
Cream of Wheat has many, many fans.
I'm going to buy some next shopping trip.
Did I say wow?
Wow!
PerkyMac at 4:15PM on 12/21/08
I love cream of wheat! My mom made it for us when were growing up, and I still love it now! It sounds really good at the moment, as we are snowed in here in Washington. I like it best with butter and brown sugar. Yum!
mhurst826 at 7:20PM on 12/21/08
no way.
dearrie at 7:24PM on 12/21/08
way way way better then oatmeal, as a kid my aunt's cooked oatmeal until it was a gluey blob.
Timothy Holdeman at 1:28AM on 12/22/08
I love Cream of Wheat -- not the quick-cooking type, but the real thing. I used to make it for my kids when they were small & they called it "baby dinner" because of the picture of a baby that used to be on the side of the box. I would make it sort of thick & pour it onto a dinner plate where it would all smooth out rather flat. Then I'd sprinkle some cinnamon & sugar over it -- maybe a little milk at the edges -- and the kids would start eating it at the edges and work around in a spiral until they got to the center. My mother & grandmother had fed it to me in the same way, so I always felt this was sort of a family tradition. Maybe it was sort of an ethnic tradition as well (my grandmother had come here from Slovakia).
Recently I began using Cream of Wheat to make dumplings for my after-Thanksgiving turkey carcass soup. I make it according to directions using very little milk so it comes out very thick, then let it cool a bit before mixing in an raw egg. Then I drop small spoonfuls into the simmering broth, cover it & let it cook for about 10 minutes. It's fantastic! Probably not maximum nutrition here, as it's made from the wheat kernel after the bran has been removed, but it's still a great food.
lurquizo at 1:54AM on 12/22/08
@PerkPerk - I've been following this thread with great amusement and astonishment - who wudda thunk indeed!:-) I know that I've been convinced, too -- I'm going to give it another try, really!
brooke29 at 2:14AM on 12/22/08
I think I might have some in the pantry. Or maybe it's cream of rice. I recall buying one or the other for some recipe that called for some peculiar ingredient that's not available in the known universe, and cream of whatever was the suggested substitution.
Maybe I should try some. Or throw it out. If it's still there.
For some reason, I always thought of it as a baby cereal, Or maybe it's just that my mother stopped feeding me breakfast at about the time I grew teeth.
dbcurrie at 2:28AM on 12/22/08
My grandmother used to make it for me with garlic, butter, salt, and pepper. No joke. It was my favorite thing.
Kerry Saretsky at 8:29AM on 12/22/08
Way!
My mother used to make this for me when I was a kid (I think there's still a box of it in her pantry that's older than I am). She used to make it with milk and maple syrup. Yum.
cstone at 9:26AM on 12/22/08
Way! Was the only hot cereal my kids would eat. Salt, butter and a little sprinkle of brown sugar did it.
PS - I love it with peanut butter melted in it and no sugar.
Kimc54 at 2:16PM on 12/22/08
Way -- I love it hot with a splash of milk, pat of butter, and a sprinkle of sugar. Yum!
bansidhe at 5:00PM on 12/22/08
definitely way! Though I make oatmeal more often now for the fiber. I'm totally with soigne, my love of all things porridgey will get me through the recession. I like it (and oatmeal) with a little (foraged) orange zest and some of the honey that I get from a vegan friend who keeps bees to help his garden. Best, cheapest food EVAR!
Ravara at 6:32PM on 12/22/08
WAY! The more lumps, the better!
Roxipapi at 4:09PM on 12/23/08
Cream of Wheat is not only delicious as a breakfast dish (cooked with milk, served with brown sugar), but it's also a crucial ingredient in Rote Gruetze, a fabulous German dish made with raspberries and served with heavy cream, and a "white polenta" from the Piemonte that's in essence Cream of Wheat with Parmesan topped with a sauce of leeks and cream. Recipes I haven't yet gotten around to trying are a 1940s wartime-rationing preparation called "Cheese Squares" (cheesy Cream of Wheat squares served with a cream sauce) and a bunch of German and Italian dishes that feature a ring of molded flavored farina (CoW) filled with various meat or vegetable sauces. There's a whole world of Cream of Wheat goodness out there for us to explore!
tessadec at 1:42PM on 12/25/08
I love Cream of Wheat, but I've developed a preference for having it Indian-style with spices, hot peppers, and little bits of vegetables. It's sooo good.
galeogirl at 1:51PM on 12/25/08
Absolutely loved Cream of Wheat as a child, but now I'm all up for using it like the Indians use semolina (which is what galeogirl is describing.
When I was homeschooling my kids, we were studying the Aztec and Mayan cultures for a little while, and came across references to atole, the national food/drink. Found some recipes and substituted Cream of Wheat for cornmeal (money was tight). It turned out to be a sort of chocolate-hot-cereal just thin enough to drink. We liked it so much it was part of our regular breakfast rota for a long time.
I'm trying to take back Christmas – a long, dull story – and this might be another arrow in my quiver. Thanks for jogging my memory :-)
gentlyferal at 3:03PM on 12/25/08
BTW: luswim06, I love your Pumpkin Oats recipe. I'll try it!
gentlyferal at 3:07PM on 12/25/08

I've never tried CoW, but the votes for "way" have convinced me to add it to my grocery list. I do love grits (with cheese, please) and do love oatmeal (preferably not from a pouch marked "instant") so I'll give it a try.

The VERY best way to enjoy Cream of Wheat is to make a slightly thicker than normal recipe, pour into a loaf pan, refrigerate overnight, then slice and panfry in butter and top with brown sugar, maple syrup, whatever you like. Mmmmmmm!

Like AliceBlue, I'm convinced. I love sliced polenta pan-fried, but never in a million years would I have thought you could do the same with CofW. Must admit, I bought it for a baby and have always considered it to be blander than bland baby cereal.
Of course, potatoes are bland, too. It's all about how you cook and what ingredients you add. Good lesson!
