Christmas: What's for Dinner

I was all set to do a standing rib roast but my sister is making beef tenderloin for Christmas Eve. My family is not crazy about turkey.
What are you making?

we're having standing rib roast for xmas day. crab cakes for xmas eve. it'll just be two of us, so it won't be too expensive.

you could do a pork roast. i saw michael symon do one the other day on some food network holiday show that looked OUTSTANDING. here, lemme see if i can find the link. the final color of it made the meat look ridiculously good.

We have herb roasted pork tenderloin with port cranberry sauce, potatos au gratin with bacon, and green beans. I'm getting hungry just writing it!

My mother's being difficult this year, said she wanted to only cook... porterhouse steaks... ARGH!! NOOOO!!! Gotta have a standing rib roast as is our tradition!!

Last year's was a bit of a hassle, so I know where she's coming from, my dad about burnt it up because he had too much fresh rosemary and thyme which burned, and almost overcooked it because he was busy playing with my brother's young boys.

This year can be so different though, I have a couple of recipes for horshradish crusted rib roast... AND I bought my father the meat-probe thermometer (I posted a thread about it last week), so no more overcooked meat!

I think she's caving with the new information provided... otherwise it just won't be the same. :(

It looks like we are having Jambalaya from the freezer with my folks. It will only be a few days after our wedding, so noone wants to plan anything else compicated, thank you very much. Besides, I expect some fab leftovers from the caterer, too!

Congratulations Cary! Christmas weddings make me cry, they're so beautiful. What are the caterers serving for your wedding feast?

southern bella - care to share the recipes for the horseradish rib roast?

Thanks Perky! THe wedding and celebration are both at my parents home; the caterers are serving:
Brie and Roasted Pear Quesadillas
Bacon-Wrapped Scallops
Cheese and Spinach Stuffed Pastry Bites
Chicken-Apple Sausage in Croissant Dough with Spicy Mustard
Chicken Cordon Bleu Skewers
Carved Beef Tenderloin with Carmelized Onions on Crostini
Twice-Baked Stuffed Redskin Potatoes
Asparagus and Mushroom Salad
Tomato Bruschetta with Grilled Jumbo Prawns

Really wanted the Oyster Rockefeller Fondue, but it wouldn't be practical to serve, and even I think there is enough cheese on the menu already for once!

@NYC - oh I haven't decided on which one, basically I did a quick search on the Food Network's website and made a note to myself to print them out and try to figure out the difference and which is best.

I read one to my mother over the phone and she scoffed at it because it had grainy mustard in the recipe, which I'm not too fond of either.

Roast beef here, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffed mushrooms, corn off the cob, rolls and birthday cake/Christmas cookies for dessert.

Paula Wolfert's chicken breasts with cepes, pine nuts, and country ham; something with celery root; green salad with pomegranate seeds and citrus; Christmas cookies galore for dessert!

We've been talking about making this Batali dish again I do occasionally. A sinful combination of meatballs, tortellini, ragu, and bechamel all baked into a pastry crust.

Since my brother is home, and my mother and I both work the day before and after, and since for us Christmas Eve is really the night that is special, our Christmas Day meal is actually going to be ordering pizza, since my father refuses to eat Asian/Chinese food.

Christmas Eve: French Dip sandwiches and soup of some kind, I would imagine, although it depends upon how much energy my mother and I have when we get home (the boys cook by making toast).

Will be either prime rib or a tenderloin. Taters, salad, rolls, home made ice cream and of course a choice of wine, martinis or scotch.

The other tradition though for the day is breakfast - after the rumple of opening gifts, will lay out a nice breakfast buffet for the family to nibble on.

It's fusion galore in my household with a mix of South American (me) and British (my SO) traditions and then some. Starters will be home-made Argentinian empanadas (chicken and humita which is sweetcorn-based); main will be roasted duck and pheasant with roasted potatoes, sweet potatoes, leeks, onions and parsnips. Dessert will be white chocolate and dulce de leche cheesecake, then homemade mince pies and later some cheese and crackers.

Crab stuffed mushrooms
Honeybaked ham
seasoned roasted veggies
turkey breast
sausage, sage and onion
Turkey gravy
Brussels sprouts with shallots and bacon
mashed potato casserole
broccoli gratin

I just got back from the grocery and typing this menu reminded me what I forgot to buy!!! Turkey wings and celery for the stock for the gravy...darn!! Stores are crowded as hell....now have to make another trip.

Made the list at work and forgot it there...Does anyone else do that??

A ham, a gratin, and I don't know what else.

I meant sausage, sage and onion Stuffing....need more sleep!!

OMG @Cary ~ your wedding menu is incredible! I'm going to print it out and use it for inspiration.

My own Christmas dinner will be fabulous (I'm only making a few side dishes), with a standing rib roast at my BFF's, and my daughters and granddaughter will be there. Couldn't be more perfect.

I want to go to Cary's wedding and visit everyone else for a taste, too!

@Perky - take me!!

Cary, your cheese and mushroom festival would make me think I'd died and gone to heaven. Here's to an equally blissful married life. =)

@Perky & Akk~~~~~lets all go, sounds like a wonderful party
