Champagne: Way or No Way?
Champagne, prosecco, or any sparkling wine.
Are you an aficionado, or just sip it at the strike of midnight to toast in the New Year? Or maybe, you'd never touch the stuff?
I actually do like some of them, but they give me such a headache, that it's not worth it. Just a toast drink for me, I'm afraid. Half Way!
Happy New Year Serious Eaters!

Love champagne. Love prosecco, cava, sparkling wine.......it's all good to me. Tomorrow night I'll be making champagne cocktails.
Happy New Year Serious Eaters. May you all drink the stars.

I will taost a beer, champange gets WAY to much in trouble, even just a tiny bit. But I wish I could though because I love the stuff. Happy New Years everyone.

Not imported champagne. Asti, prosecco, sparkling wine.
Nitrates give me a headache.
JerzeeTomato at 2:25AM on 12/31/08
Love love love it! We've got a bottle of the widow on ice for tonight - yum! But that will go between 4 people; I can't have more than a glass and a half or I get a horrible headache. My bro-in-law (who makes wine for a living) says it's an allergy to something in the way white wines are filtered...
cowprintrabbit at 2:33AM on 12/31/08
Definitely "way" on this one... I LOVE Champagne, as well as cava, prosecco, Cremant d'Alsace, Franciacorta, sekt, California sparkling wine... if it's well-made, I enjoy sparkling wine regardless of where it is from (although it irritates me when producers outside the Champagne region of France label their sparkling wines as "Champagne"... it might very well be great sparkling wine, but it isn't Champagne).
For me, it definitely does not have to be a special occasion; sparkling wines are always welcome at my table. Best of all, many of them are wonderful with or without food.

just depends I love some hate others on the whole I stick to prosecco and some of the whites from columbia valley. Don't much care for california wines though.
huneybumper at 8:17AM on 12/31/08
Not a big drinker, and I don't even like soda or sparkling water--just not into the bubbles. Or even bubble baths ;) Loved to see the stuff pop as a kid, of course, but other than that, no.
HeartofGlass at 9:02AM on 12/31/08
I'll have a sip or two but thats it.....so I guess its both ways, but now a shot of good whiskey...Way

The only alcoholic beverage that I really love and enjoy is red wine. I find the 'need' for champagne in any kind of celebration a bit contrived and sometimes pompous. I take a sip if I'm offered a glass just to be polite but don't think anything of it. I'd say it's great if you really like it but I don't like the whole fake 'glamour' attached to it.
HappyMuncher at 9:18AM on 12/31/08
No way...gives me headaches.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
izatryt at 9:50AM on 12/31/08
gorilla ass... from someone who has only heard what they taste like... NO WAY!
Pavlov at 9:55AM on 12/31/08
it's my kryptonite..... i love champagne, cava, sparkling wine, I love it all! hmmm is it too early to start?
blankplate at 10:15AM on 12/31/08
WAY
um, really? i didn't think ~no way~ was possible. there has got to be some type of sparkling wine out there for everyone. some sweeter, some bone-dry. i can't think of a celebration w/out it and i can't think of a food that can't be paired with some type of it (even a big steak dinner.)
this may be a miss-quote but someone said of champagne:
'in victory you deserve it, in defeat you need it' maybe Churchhill or Napolean.
coolname at 10:25AM on 12/31/08
hell yes, way!!! love it all, prosecco, cava, california sparklers, etc. not just for special occasions either.
sloppy at 10:47AM on 12/31/08
No way. But I will be having some DeuS. It is a style of called Bier de Champagne. It is fermented and treated like champagne. Try some, it's super yummy.
beersnob at 10:47AM on 12/31/08
Seldom order or buy it. but still a "Way".
dmcavanagh at 11:22AM on 12/31/08
Way Way Way!
The "no-ways" on this one baffle me. Oh well, more for me!
I'm not sure what to make of this bit of info, but champagne sales are down worldwide. Is it the bad economy, the rapper boycott, war?
wookie at 11:32AM on 12/31/08
I'll have an ice cold beer. Kona Longboard or Dos Equis, or both.
Champagne makes strange things happen to me (most I don't remember)
Don't want to make the hubby have to mop me up and pour me in the bed!
soozm32 at 11:43AM on 12/31/08
No way.
I hate the flavor of alcohol, and only tolerate it in cooking -- as long as it's cooked at least 2 hours.
Cassaendra at 11:46AM on 12/31/08
No way. I like red wine, like some white wines, and particularly like a nice cocktail. Champagne just doesn't do it for me - I'd rather toast with something I really enjoy!
cyberroo at 1:33PM on 12/31/08
If it's a sip before the stroke of midnight, way. Other than that, I don't need to pop the bubbly.

Love, love, love it but must drink it very judiciously. Too much and I get a block rocking hangover.
I ordered 2 bottles of this for tonight. Non-Champagne drinkers love it and Champagne lovers are really surprised by how good it is. I had this wine for 1999/2000 and thought it apropos for tonight. It's been a pretty good year. :D
therealchiffonade at 5:31PM on 12/31/08
Just white wine for me, please! The bubbles go straight to my head and I swear it gives me hot-flashes; I get really hot and my cheeks become flushed.
dhorst at 5:49PM on 12/31/08
Love it, and so far, don't seem to have any painful consequences after drinking it, but I don't buy it often. OH doesn't drink, so it's just me, which means that if I open a bottle - it's just me (and, well, the bottle), unless we have company, of course (and I can always use leftover champagne in cooking, but still). Sometimes it's not a bad thing though:-).
In any case - WAY!
brooke29 at 5:51PM on 12/31/08
Absolutely - prefer Prosecco to Champagne, but won't turn it down. Just did a bottle for early New Years celebration.
Ribster at 9:10PM on 12/31/08
Not so much. However, I've probably never had good champagne. Most of my run-ins with it have been at parties and weddings, where I'm sure the quality was less than spectacular. Now, just a sip of the stuff gives a headache. I'm sure a whole glass would do me in.
I do like sparkling wines, though. I don't buy them often, however, because I'm the only wine drinker, and unless I have some devious plans for cooking with the stuff, there's little chance I'm going to finish a bottle of bubbly stuff on my own before the fizz has fizzled.
If someone had a bottle of the good stuff, I'd try it, but very cautiously. There is not enough joy in a single glass of any wine for me to risk spending the whole next day in throbbing darkness.
dbcurrie at 6:35PM on 01/01/09
no way. gives me headaches. i'd rather toast with something harder.
dearrie at 6:45PM on 01/01/09
Champagne is fun. Never mix, never worry :)
Shelleyanne at 6:56PM on 01/01/09
let me answer it this way. preference of alcohol options (fave ->least fave): mixed drink/liquers, wine, hard alcohol, fruity lambic beers, champagne/sparkling wines, light beers, dark beers.
champagne is better than stuff i hate, but not good enough to be liked.
blizcheetah at 12:43AM on 01/02/09
Way! I love me some bubbly.
When my husband and I got married, the restaurant where we held our reception gave us a bottle of the most incredible dessert wine and a bottle of good champagne as gifts. My MIL (staying at our house) got hold of the champagne while hubby and I were staying overnight at the hotel, and drank the whole bottle. We. Were. Pissed. Still are, in fact.
buffy at 12:52AM on 01/02/09
@buffy - I have a very similar story. OH and I never got to eat at our wedding, and our caterer packed a huge box of food and a bottle of champagne for us "to go". As I went to pick up some of my stuff, I saw my BIL take the box. I thought he was going to bring it to our car. Instead, the bugger took it with him to the hotel he was staying in. No, not by mistake. When we got to our hotel (way after midnight), the first thing we did was order room service - we were starving! Oh, and we're still pissed, too.
brooke29 at 1:36AM on 01/02/09
NO way! I 'enjoyed' a glass or two of bubbly at midnight on new years. I know now - never again! I could drink martinis 'til the wee hours, but I've been praying to the porcelain god for two miserable days now! I don't know who brought the bubbly swill to my party, but if I ever find out, they'd better keep one eye open for me ;-D
