Best Pastries in Manhattan?

Where can I find great pastries for Christmas morning? Specifically croissants - with fruit fillings if possible (but not required). Is Balthazar the place to go?
Thanks in advances!

Yes, I think your instincts are right about Balthazar. The croissants are hands down delish. The brioche as well.

Payard Patisserie on the UES. But croissants don't usually have fruit fillings -- chocolate or almond is more traditional.... are you thinking about danishes?

I know fruit fillings aren't traditional for croissants, but there was a bakery in the town where I grew up that did this, so I was hoping someone here might as well - tradition, you know? Thanks for the advice!

How about Buchon Bakery in Time Warner Building, but you have to go early. They often run out by mid afternoon.

My favorite is Black Hound in the East Village.

Cupcakes: Two Little Red Hens

I don't think either of those spots has croissants, BTW.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a really good piece of homemade, old fashioned crumb cake?

I second Payard; they're consistently good.

Balthazar is perfect.

If you want to try something else, Amai Tea & Bake House makes reallly amazing croissants, muffins, scones and other pastries. The sizes are great - not ginormous like a lot of other places around town, and they use top-notch ingredients. Great stuff.

Amy's Bread makes nice morning pastries. Petrossian. City Bakery and/or Birdbath...

I'm getting hungry...

I'm getting hungry too! Thanks for the suggestions. I've never heard of Amai Tea & Bake House, so I'll have to check it out.

i think the corner bakery on 93rd and 3rd has crumb cake. they have delicious pastries.

Eli's (80th & 3rd) is my go-to for croissant, plain and chocolate, and brioche. Also Danishes, crumb cake, fancy filled and iced cakes. Find these same baked goods at EAT and The Vinegar Factory.
