Who knows a good restaurant in Alexandria, VA?

We have some good friends coming into town this weekend. We met them in St Louis where our favorite thing to do was find good restaurants and bars. We've convinced them to move to the Baltimore/Annapolis area (YEA!), and my husband wants to go eat in Alexandria this weekend. He knows there are good places but we'd like names and recommendations.

Hey Fellow Texan. When I used to live in the DC area we'd go to Savios. http://www.saviosrestaurant.com/ Cant go wrong with this one.

I ate at Vermilion about a year ago and enjoyed it. It's contemporary American, which I thought I would despise, but times have changed. The atmosphere was reasonably intimate (you are, after all, in Old Town Alexandria and can't get away from the brick and hardwood floors). The crowd seemed ready to enjoy some decent food, as opposed to being there to network and politick (at least, not too much).

You can never go wrong with the Great American Restaurants Family. (Mike's American, Silverado, Carlyle Grand, Coastal Flats, Sweetwater Tavern, Arties) Fabulous food, average prices, ($15-$18 entrees), stellar service. None of them are in Old Town, I would happily give up the atmosphere of Old Town for their food.
And no, I do not work for them, at least not in the past 10 years.

Sweetwater Tavern is DELICIOUS! And they brew their own beer!
