vegan dessert ideas
it's my birthday party on saturday, and a bunch of us are going to a bar around the corner from my house. late nights they don't serve food but are pretty amenable to outside food being brought in, so i'm planning on making a cake. my best friend, however, is vegan, so i'd like to also make a little something that she can enjoy. i don't want to spend the day of my party engaged in labor-intensive baking so requirements are:
1) vegan
2) not too difficult or expensive
3) easily transportable (the bar is close by, but still got to get it from my kitchen to bar table)
i've never baked anything vegan, so before venturing out, wanted to know se'ers thoughts on the tried-and-true!

Box of chalk... make it colored chalk. Sorry, vegan does not compute

I've used a very similar recipe for years. Look no further. What I'd like to think about is frosting. Any suggestions for that?

another great source of vegan dessert inspiration is vegan yum yum

apple cobbler or apple crisp is easy to veganize and seasonal.
here is a vegan yum yum mini apple pies I made as one large pie once to good effect.

sometimes I feel like the vegan blogs I read are only desserts and that gets frustrating
also deb of here and there/altered plates who posts to SE sometimes has some good vegan desserts on her blog, and she uses agave syrup instead of sugar.

my girlfriend is a vegan who does not eat sugar. I, on the other hand, am a dedicated omnivore and a firm believer in animal products and animal fats in my cooking. However, I have prepared many vegan desserts from the sources above that I have found all of them quite delicious.

good frosting from the vegweb (recommended along with the cake recipe suggested by lemons and nightowl)

I always have been fond of chocolate spice cake. Here are two interesting ones. Hope it helps. Happy Birthday!

Vegan peanut butter cookies (which can also be made with any nut butters if you want to get fancy) are a good option--you can serve them with non-dairy based ice cream. Baked apples or fruit compote can be nice.

The first thing that came to mind was fruit. Maybe with a chocolate dipping sauce?

thanks for all the great suggestions! i guess i was concerned because baking is all about "chemistry," i didn't want to replace things with vegan-things only to have the end result turn out wrong. but all these suggestions look delicious!

this is a very reliable recipe for a carrot cake... I use regular yogurt, but to make it vegan, just substitute with a soy-based yogurt and you're done. Easy and very delicious.

i love this strawberry kanten recipe... it might not work necessarily for your friend's birthday per se, but if you would like to surprise her with a nice treat one day, this recipe is awesome. You'll just need agar agar from the health food store... and voila.

Make a vegan chocolate ganache frosting. Instead of heavy cream, use coconut milk.
