Pizzeria in Midtown in New York
I'm looking for a great pizzeria near 41st and Madison, the kind of place that you can sit down and have a nice, fun dinner with friends, with good atmosphere, great pizza, and a reasonable check. Know of any?

Hmm, the nearest pizzeria with decent pizza there would be Naples 45, 45th in the bottom of the MetLife Building. Atmosphere is OK -- sort of "business lunch," though I've never been there at dinnertime. Depends on how reasonable your "reasonable" is on the check. Individual pizzas run $16 for a basic margherita to $35 for the "to share/metro mezzo" pizzas.
If it's not too far out of your way, Lazzara's on 38th b/n Seventh and Eighth might do you right. Good atmosphere -- sort of like a pizza speakeasy, it's on the 2nd floor of an old townhouse. The pizzas here, though, if you're a big eater, can get a little pricey -- $18 for a rather small six-slice rectangular pie. Plus, you'd have to call them to make sure they do pizza at dinner. The website is confusing and doesn't list it on the dinner menu.

John's in the theater district - same ownership as John's on Bleecker. Brick oven. Delicious, also a pretty space - former tabernacle, stained glass ceiling. On W. 44th. Street.

Angelo's Coal Oven Pizza is Midtown's Best
There are two locations: 57th near 6th Avenue & 55th and 2nd Avenue
Both are excellent. Light airy crust, tasty sauce, a healthy amount of fresh mozzarella. Pepperoni is tiny and crisp around the edges. I recommend you add garlic to half the pie. Make sure to ask for the pie well done, however, it makes everything taste better.

@Kerry: I'd go to John's before Angelo's. Angelo's crust is weak sauce. Light and airy, sure, but flavorless.

I would highly recommend Lazzarras at 221 West 38th Street...btw 7/8th...its really a hidden gem in the pizza world...
I tested naples 45 out...and it was WAY overpriced and didnt deliver...I needed a bailout from the fed just to pay my check.

There's a new Lazzarra's at 617 9th Avenue between 43rd and 44th now as well.

Naples 45 is only worth it for take out after 2pm when the price of a slice goes down!

The new Lazzarra's unfortunately does not have seating. It's strictly a take-out and delivery set-up. But then again, it's nowhere close to 41st and Mad. I highly recommend Lazzarra's on 38th. It's a bit of a trek crosstown, but definitely worth it.
