Phx/Tempe eats?

I'm in Phx for a business trip and after driving around Tempe and ending up at PF Changs (ugh), I'd like to find something better for lunch and dinner the rest of the week. I really prefer non-chain restaurants and they don't have to be *too* nice (my per diem isn't absurd), but I like my food to be GOOD.

Suggestions?

There is a great NY style Deli on University Dr at Rural & McClintock called Chompies. It's a very popular local chain. On E. University there is the Chuck Box- great burgers. On Mill Avenue there are many good non-chain restaurants. Also, check out www.feastinginphoenix.com

Have a nice time in sunny AZ! Hope you can stay and enjoy the beautiful weather we're having for a while!

For a quick, filling and pretty cheap lunch check out Pita Jungle on Apache Between Rural and McClintock. So GOOOD and tons of choices you should be able to return daily for lunch and not eat the same thing twice - tho yea I always do.

For dinner? Try Lo Cascio's Italian on Scottsdale just north of McKellips or OOh House of Tricks on 7th Street just off of Mill and now is the PERFECT weather for that place. Just might have to head there myself this weekend.

or just hit downtown Tempe...tons of good places! And even better, they're all smoke free!

Wildfish Seafood Grille in Scottsdale.

I'm seconding Chompie's. Sushi Ken (I believe...) is where an old staple of Tucson, Sushi Ten, ended up (good sushi, soba, even Japanese style spaghetti!). Also, if there's still a Voodoo Daddy's in the area, go. It's pretty good eating.

I'm always so disappointed with the Phoenix area. There's very few mom-and-pop sort of places, chains are everywhere, and with the exception of Pizzeria Bianco, mediocrity everywhere. So joyyy, I understand - my aunt lives in Chandler and every time I visit her, it's always a damn chain restaurant. Barf.
